These are Bollywood divas who have gone beyond playing the regular second fiddle to the male protagonist in commercial Bollywood films.

They often have defied the cliched definition of a stereotypical heroine of a Hindi film and played characters of substance showing their mettle in the most cerebral way and sometimes even in the most predictable manner. With International Women's Day around the corner, a toast to all those memorable celluloid characters who've made us laugh and cry with them, as they've made changes to the history of Indian cinema over the years.

Thank god, Times of India had the good sense not to put makeup box ash rai on this list.

Anonymous's picture

Can't believe they listed bimbos like the kapoor sisters and p.chopra but left out a classic beauty Rekha in Umrao Jaan.

I am astonished to see that you people have noticed that Rani Mukherjee's name is missing(I also like Rani Mukherjee)but you people never noticed that SRIDEVI'S name is missing, which is a great offence.

Why the medias and some people in general delberately neglect and disrespect SriDevi i don't understand.SriDevi had been the ultimate Diva,i don't belong to SriDevi's generation but i belong to Aishwarya and Katrina's generation, but as much i have seen of SriDevi i have understood that she was a great and versatile actress. So bollywood lover, please include SriDevi's name here from yourself, forget about Times of India.

Rani in Black epitomised the true female power. Who else has done such a challenging role? Nobody.

Anonymous's picture

RANI FOR BLACK

Anonymous's picture

beautiful Love our Indian beauties hate all these wannabe actresses like amy and nargis firgani types

Anonymous's picture

where is madhubala?????????????????????????????

Anonymous's picture

Rani from Black and LCMD isnt on the list? Seriously? what idiot made this list?

Anonymous's picture

i dont mean to attack Ash's fan.. but am confused where you see her 'magnificent' acting skills??
the only movie she was good was HDDCS. Devdas was ok..but incase you all havn't noticed all she is good at this is doing the damsel in distress acting i.e just showing off her face ( and i really do think she is beautiful, just not acting material). A real actor is one who can do natural acting and comedy which she very much lacks. but yeah she dances well and is tall and pretty so i guess that does make a a good BOllywood actress..only in bollywood..haha

Aishwarya is THE MOST overrated actress...

Anonymous's picture

Where is Sridevi?! She has the most female centric successful films!!! Lamhe, Sadma, Chaandni, Chaalbaaz, Laadla, Judaai, Nagina, Mr. India, Khuda Gawah!!

How ridiculous that u guys haven't included her!!!

Anonymous's picture

Priyankaaa!!!

Anonymous's picture

Sridevi in Gumrah, Lamhe, Chandini...even Laadla - She always did something different and daring and needs to be on this list

Karisma - She also has Fiza and Shakti to her credit as powerhouse performances, but I think it was Fiza in 2000 which really made people sit up and pay attention to her talent.

Jaya Bachchan, Smita Patel and Tabu - rockstars for me

Putting PC up there is a joke!

SOMEHOW AGREE WITH THE LIST
BUT WHR IS SRIDEVVII NO LIST CAN B COMPLTE WIDOUT HER

Oxygen's picture

Oh! I m so so sorry, there was no mention that it actually was article from TOI.So i thought it was a personal list.Anyways, the list isn't credible.

Oxygen's picture

Wow! I haven't even heard some of these films like Bandit Queen,Damini,Astitva,Mrityudandh n others,so can't judge the films or performances. And WTH,though this is completely your views, its not credible and doesn't make sense without including Rani's superb perf.s in Black/Yuva or Aishwarya's magnificent perf.s in Devdas/HDDCS/Chokher Bali/Raincoat/Provoked/Shabd etc..Other good actresses IMO that I have seen are Konkona Sen Sharma,Shabana Azmi(though have seen only her late movies),Vidya etc.Haven't seen much work of Madhuri,TABU or Sridevi,so can't comment, though I have heard a lot about Tabu's and Sridevi's fantastic perf.s.Though Fanna was a good performance,I think Kajol has better performances.I thought Priyanka was great in Aitraaz better than Fashion.
And @bollywoodlover U really justify ur name,u seem to have watched a lot of BW films. :)
