Is Bollywood suffering from creative bankruptcy?
Creative bankruptcy seems to have gripped Bollywood. Every second film looks inspired from foreign movies. To add to this sad plight, every filmmaker today are re-churning the classics. Zanzeer, Agneepath, Don , Satte pe satta and even not so very old Andaaz Apna Apna. Filmmakers are even looking down South for inspiration. Magadheera, Vettai are soon to be remade in Bollywood. Bollywood is often touted as the second largest movie industry in the world. And India as an emerging super power. Any industry needs to grow and in the positive direction. This recent trend in Bollywood is such an unhealthy trend. Have we gotten so lazy that we cant even think of coming up with some original scripts and music ? Or Has Bollywood gotten plain lazy? Why is everyone in Bollywood having the herd mentality? Why is everyone following each other in the remake trend? This brings to the point I wanted to make. Where is Bollywood headed? Is there any hope left or are we really creatively bankrupt? P.S: I have added the poster of one of my favorite Bollywood classics which unfortunately is being remade :(

Mark my words today's Katrina Kaif will be remembered like a Meena Kumari remembered today in 30 years from now. Not because she is good but because talent is in the decline and we yet to see the worst.

This is a scary thought but I think it is true

Why are they only Remaking films from the 70s only? Why not films from the 50s, 60s or Older. You don't hear Directors/Producers saying we are doing a Remake on one of Dilip Kumar Films, or Raj Kapoor, or Rajesh Khanna. It's ONLY AMTITABH BACHACHAN'S FILM that are being Remade. Remaking one man's film all the time is WRONG. But nobody stands up for what is wrong..everyone just goes with the flow. Please tell them to stop doing this to Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.
MAYBE THEY REMAKING AMITAB BACHCHAN MOVIES B/C THIS MOVIES ABOUT THE ANGRY MAN .REVENGE .FIGHTS .WITH SMALL RULES FOR THE HEROINE.......

Hollywood itself has taken "inspiration" from many Asian (Korean, Japanese) films
YES ITS TRUE BUT HOLLYWOOD ADMIT TO THAT ...
AND THEY MAKE A GOOD COPY LIKE THE ORIGINAL OR EVEN BETTER....

We are not debating if Hollywood does a better job of remaking Asian, South American, Iranian films. The debate is that they do. So why do you people watch those films? I'm sure many of you went to watch the new Agneepath and applauded at the end of the movie which is fine. It was an entertaining film. However, it does not mean that the original Agneepath has been replaced.
It is a tendency amongst many Bollywood watchers to CONSTANTLY compare them with Hollywood flicks. Why? Movies like Aliens vs. Ninjas, Resident Evil, Tron, Iron Man, Transformers will not work in Bollywood and if you people notice, an increasing number of such sci-fi movies are coming out in Hollywood. These would definitely not work for the general masses in India.
For instance, Koreans love their romcoms. A lot of their good movies are just romcoms which is greatly appreciated by their audience. I myself have watched a few and they are quite entertaining. They are not trying to match Hollywood standards. What I am trying to say here is every film industry needs to first attend to its masses' needs. I don't see why Bollywood should be constantly compared with Hollywood. Our own people look down on our own products. Rather be proud that it's recognized worldwide.

So I am not the only one who feels this way, sitting far away from India. I have commented many times how I feel abt hindi movies....Its not like good old days where the whole village and your parents and siblings can watch movies together,I might add classic movies which have moral values and family values.. and actors were brilliant.
These days movies are crap...no story...actors who cannot act or spk correct english ie katrina kaif and more coming in like her.....on this point why can't they find any desi real indian girl with billion ppl iam sure u can find girl who can act and spk hindi.....its very annoying when its dubbed...And if there is a foreign girl why not a foreign boy........
the only movie i am looking forward is with real desi girl Sonakshi Sinha.....and many many ppl here are watching tv serials like saath nibhaan saathiya and diya aur baati....it has romance values and tradition....
Pls producers make movies with stories like Prem Rog and movies with saas and babu drama......
thnks

stop making AB remakes. Indian viewers should Boycott all remakes. It is a con.
Amitabh Bachchan movies are being mined like gold, now that the angry young man character is back in fashion.
well when their own body parts are not original anymore..how do you expect scripts to be original.

hahahahaha..this is so funny and true.
I agree with this article! In addition it is not that the movies that have changed! The actors and actresses too! Before there was very good actors (Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, etc ....) and excellent actress (Hema Malini, Mumtaz, Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Zeenat Aman, Tabu, etc.. ..)! But now, we actors are increasingly invalid, the men think that has to be tough or be nice! Women are all redone, they do not even know dancing, they can not play! Look at me rotten this actress, Katrina Kaif, she knows nothing and is always the same She'll play with Amitabh Bachchan you realize it?! It is heartbreaking for India!

I don't think that remaking classics is an issue. If only, it's a flattery. Doesn't it show that movie was well-appreciated and it's still etched in people's hearts? For example, the new Agneepath is amazing. The old one will remain a classic and won't be replaced but I don't know of a single person who's watched the new Agneepath and have not appreciated the performances. Also, it being a huge hit proves that people are willing to spend money to go watch remakes. All I'm trying to say is remakes do not replace the classics. They are interchangeably fixated in their respective positions.
As for Bollywood taking inspirations from the Southern industry as well as Hollywood, if I may inform you, even Hollywood itself has taken "inspiration" from many Asian (Korean, Japanese) films. I watch subtitled Korean films and believe me, they are some amazing films which Hollywood has "re-made" later on. The difference is that Indians are not aware of this information since I'm sure a vast majority of them have never watched an Oriental film.
Most importantly, Hollywood makes a lot of movies based on sci-fi and imagination (Star Wars, John Carter, 300, Avatar, etc.) You get what I am trying to say. There is a market for that type of films there. A huge number of Indian audience would not enjoy such films. From a business standpoint, it's not a viable option which is essentially movies are about.

well when their own body parts are not original anymore..how do you expect scripts to be original.
One of these days PC's plastic parts will start popping out.
So what about ash doing umrao jaan and calling it her own and failing miserably at it.
Bwood really needs to wake up, as much as I love BW I hate how they keep doing remake and copy movies plus hate how they repeat stars alot in movies!!
Where is bollywood headed? Nowhere
Indians take so much pride to know that india makes more films than hollywood in a year, but what's the use?
We make more trash than hollywood too.
Satte pe satta was already a remake of hollywood movie seven brides for seven brothers
well as long as the script is powerfull and the way it is projected is very well
audiance will come and watch it and critics will like it
the example is Agnnepath but if the movie lacks in script and it s a very fresh story its
is not going to work even it has the biggest start cast of today
so what we as an audiance want is a strong script it does matter if my dad and grand father
has watched that origional movie back days if i have a good time watching it it s worth it!!!!
Bollywood is in a comma since the end of the 1990s. it became so westernized be it the movies, the songs.. no Indian flavor at all. Why I would want to see a westernized Indian film when I have Hollywood movies??? but where can I watch real Indian movie??? Can't except going back to the old movies.
Bollywood just need to be buried and it will sooner or later
There are people in BW who are creative, unique, original whether it be Actors, Actresses, Directors, Producers, Writers such as Aamir Khan, Raju Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Vidya Balan, Anurag Kashyap, Bejoy Nambiar, Imtiaz Ali, Vishal Bharadwaj, Vikramaditaya Motwane, Habib Faisal, Tigmanshu Dhulia etc.
But, yes, they are very few and very far between. The rest just get inspired by the above originals' successes and jump on the bandwagon or copy outside successes (Hollywood, South Industry, Old school hits) and jump on that bandwagon by remaking them.
Sad, but TRUE!
india has many talented writers and directors
but its producers and actors who always opt for the tried and tested movies
surely bollywood is suffering from creativity
I agree,BW is the most productive film industry in the world and the second most popular in the world. This is not at all the way it should work. They have to completely get rid of these Remakes,copy-paste acts n stuff. We need original films with original and great concepts.Though quality and original gems are also made, they are less in number compared to these remakes. They really need to concentrate completely on content of the film rather than the stars.
All these producers running behind Big B's films will soon find out that his films are irreplaceable. Right now Bollywood is filled with hipster, no-talent Hollywood wannabes who're taking amazing films(foreign as well as national films) & turning them into trash. That said, of course Bollywood is suffering from creative bankruptcy, but so is Hollywood or for that matter any other film industry in the world. Actually like Bollywood even Hollywood makes 70-80%junk(remakes, reboots, adaptations) throughout the year, however those remaining 20-30%of remaining films are so groundbreaking, innovative, stunningly original, perfectly directed & acted films that they are just mindblowing & change the face of cinema itself. No one can make 100%original films, but Bollywood atleast remake somebody else's stolen property with dignity & don't turn them into trash. So Bollywood pls give us something original, mindblowing & creative once in awhile. In the past 5yrs the only film that's so unique, innovative, & mind-boggling is Kahaani. Come on Bollywood surprise us!!!!!
Love your post! So true and I 100% agree. There are a few exceptions of filmmakers who dare to attempt something different but unfortunately majority of them are like sheep. They all lack originality. Sad thing is there's so much potential too.
Hopefully, this too will change eventually. I mean there is a thing called 'INSPIRATION' and then there is 'REMAKES' or straight of 'STEALING'. :( pathetic.
AB's movies are classic..he also cant remake them, forget about others. Bollywood doesn have any talent...even they cant copy properly. All good actors r gone n now only bunch of white skin half Indian acctress and monkey looking khans are hit. The other day I was seeing Mahabharat series and what acting it had. Shame that we have such low standards for STARs now.
I think the last interesting movie was Jab we met. After that it's all crap.
Indeed!
I REMEMBER WHEN KAREENA KAPOOR DID YEH MERA DIL IN DON 1...A SONG WHICH SHE COPIED FROM HELEN IN THE ORIGINAL DON...SHAMELESS KAREENA SAID THE SONG NOW BELONG TO HER. WHEN MY MOTHER SAW HELEN'S DANCING VERSES KAREENA'S DANCING...MY MOM SAID 'WHAT HELEN DANCE, KAREENA CRAWL'. SHE COULDN'T MANAGE TO BEAT HELEN IN YEH MERA DIL AT ALL!!. THE KAPOOR SISTERS ALONG WITH PRIYANKA CHOPRA ARE MY VERY LEAST FAVORITE IN BOLLYWOOD. OH HOW I WISH THEY WOULD JUST DISAPPEAR.
I am just playing devil's advocate here. A re-make doesn't mean there is no work involved. The film still has to work on every level for it to be a success. There is infact even more pressure. I never watch a remake, trying to compare it with the old. I watch it like it is a separate film.
There's plenty of talent in the Indian Film Industry who will go different ways, not just the remake way, who will think up of original and engaging scripts. I know that and have full faith in that. Remakes are just a handful.
I CALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE REMAKING OLD FILMS...THIVES & CROOKS'. HAVE YOU NOTICE IT'S ALL OF AMTHABH BACHCHAN FILMS THAT ARE BEING REMADE THE MOST ?? NEXT IT WILL BE HEMA MALINI'S FILM TO BE REMADE ONE BY ONE. SHAMELESS PEOPLE.
ACTRESSES LIKE PRIYANKA CHOPRA, KAREENA KAPOOR AND KARISHMA KAPOOR WILL JUMP ON THE OPPORTUNITY ANYTIME TO DO A HEMA MALINI REMAKE...THEN THEY WILL CALL IT THEIR OWN. IS THAT FAIR ? YESTERYEAR ACTRESSES LIKE HEMAJI HAVE WORKED JUST AS HARD OR (EVEN HARDER) TO MAKE THEIR CAREER...NOW THEIR HARD WORK IS EASILY BEING REPLACED BY YOUNGER, GREEDY, FAME LOVING, HARD FACE, HORSE FACE ACTRESSES WHO REFUSE TO SETTLE IN A MARIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE. I CALL THEM BANDIT QUEENS. THEY ENJOY DOING THE REMAKES. PRIYANKA, KAREENA, KARISHMA AND SHAH RUKH KHAN LIKE TO PROVE THAT THEY ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE.
