Here is a very interesting report from Hindustan Times that's worth a discussion. While women are abused in Hollywood too, it seems to be more rampant in Bollywood. Thought? Article follows.
Reports of Salman Khan hitting Katrina Kaif bring to light how women in Bollywood have always faced harassment and discrimination.
Salman Khan: Somy Ali, Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif
When Salman was dating actor Somy Ali in the 90s, it was reported that he smashed a bottle of cola on her head at a party, in a fit of rage.
Aishwarya admitted in an interview that Salman had hit her during their relationship. In 2001, Ash’s family had filed a complaint about Salman coming to their house drunk and breaking furniture and window panes. In 2003 the actor issued a statement against Sallu in which she wrote, “I stood by him enduring alcoholism and misbehavior in its worst phases and in turn, I was at the receiving end of his abuse (verbal, physical, emotional), infidelity and indignity.”
Salman allegedly slapped Katrina Kaif on the sets of their film Yuvraaj in 2008, after he saw a picture of her in a newspaper with Akshay Kumar at an IPL match. He also reportedly slapped her earlier at a coffee shop.
Rahul Mahajan: Dimpy Ganguly
Rahul Mahajan, the reality TV actor, already had a history of abuse, with reports that he used to beat his former wife Shweta. Dimpy, who married Mahajan on reality show Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge later alleged that Mahajan had beaten her and threatened her with a gun. Dimpy claimed that Mahajan punched and kicked her after wanting to know the contents of an SMS on her phone. However, she later went back to him.
Zeenat Aman: Sanjay Khan, Mazhar Khan
Sanjay Khan and Zeenat Aman met on the sets of a film in 1980 and started dating. It has been reported that Khan assaulted Zeenat in full public view in the lobby of a Mumbai Hotel.
According to reports, Khan beat her so badly that the actor had a doctor and nurse attending to her for eight days and she had to take anti-depressants three times a day. Reason: Khan wanted to re-shoot a song from their film Abdullha, but she refused due to other commitments.
Zeenat married actor Mazhar Khan in 1985. It was reported that Mazhar beat her and the couple later filed for divorce.

Madhur Bhandarkar/Preeti Jain
In July 2004, actor Preeti Jain lodged a complaint against filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar alleging that he had raped her 16 times between 1999 and 2004, under the pretext of casting her as actor in his films. Madhur insists the complaint was of “cheating” and did not mention rape.
Dibaker Banerjee/Payal Rohatgi
In March 2011, actor Payal Rohatgi accused filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee of trying to take advantage of her physically. Payal said, “Dibakar commented that I had gained weight. He asked me to show him my stomach. I didn’t like it.” Dibakar said she made the comments to malign his image.
Irrfan Khan/Mamata Patel
Irrfan Khan was accused of deceitful intimacy by actor Mamata Patel who worked with him in Paan Singh Tomar. Mamata said that Irrfan exploited her during the outdoor shoot of the film and threatened her to stay mum about their relation and also promised her meaty roles in future projects.
Subhash Ghai/Rina Golan
New York-raised Rina Golan in her book Dear Mister Bollywood: How I Fell In Love with India, Bollywood and Shah Rukh Khan, named industry veterans Subhash Ghai, Anup Jalota and Anees Bazmee in her biography, claiming that they all asked her for sexual favours when she met them for work.
Ismail Darbar/Poonam Yadav
Music director Ismail Darbar was accused of being responsible for Sa Re Ga Ma contestant Poonam Yadav’s supposed pregnancy, abortion and a suicide attempt that followed. Poonam slammed the accusations saying, “Ismail sir has been my pillar of strength. Don’t drag his name into this.”
Rajkumar Santoshi/Mamta Kulkarni
Actor Mamta Kulkarni had accused filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi of asking her for sexual favours on the sets of China Gate and said that when she refused, he cut her role. Santoshi denied all rumours and post this incident Mamta lost out many roles in Bollywood, and her career was cut short.

The year was titled as the year of women power, even though there were only a handful of releases with female actors playing the role of the central protagonist including No One Killed Jessica, Turning 30, The Dirty Picture, 7 Khoon Maaf, Shabri and That Girl In Yellow Boots. The majority of releases were all about heroes and their heroism.
While in 2012...
There has been one woman-oriented film yet: Kahaani. The next will be Bebo’s Heroine. In terms of debutant directors, Puja Jatinder Bedi, Anu Menon and Gitanjali Saha gave duds such as Ghost; London, Paris, New York and Yeh Khula Aasmaan. Bela Sehgal and Gauri Shinde will come out with Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi and English Vinglish.

The Pay disparity is repulsive. It just accentuates the fact that women are considered disposable props.
The whole white men vs asian men is total BS. Assault and abuse are common themes in most countries even in the first world ones. Actresses are exploited in Hollywood with the same frequency as in Bollywood. Go look up the blind items related to casting couches in Hollywood. In comparison our blind items are very tame.
It's the inability of audiences to take off their rose tinted glasses and stop the worship of mere human beings that increases the problem. Inflated paychecks and inflated egos are ultimately all these stars have. Add alcohol/drug issues and you've got a breeding ground for abuse.
It is also untrue that only men are abusers, women can be equally nasty.
As far as Katrina is concerned, even if Salman beats her to a pulp IMO, she will never denounce him, because of all that he has done for her. He knows all her dirty secrets, she knows, she is where she is today because of Salman. He could do some serious damage to her career if hewanted to.
wow, apologists are out in full force either denying what happened to Aishwarya, or trying to rationalise Salmon's actions. Domestic violence is a really sensitive issue. Evidence isnt always present/available in such cases (of domestic violence) becauses it occurs in such a private/personal sphere. Abusing someone else physically, violating their space, abusing them emotionally, and mentally is disgusting and Im actually astounded, that people on here are supporting Salman as if they have seen concrete proof that Aishwarya is lying. Some things should come before your favourite celebrity, like umm, your HUMANITY and MORALITY, you sick people.
Though, there has always circumstantial evidence against Salman; he used to barge onto the Chalte Chalte sets, disrupt the shooting,even harass and visibly upset Aishwarya. Did she not used to come onto the sets with bruises forming aswell?

Did Abishek really went to meet{kiss up} his Real Super Hero -Salman in a studio couple of weeks and waited for two hours until Salman got done with his shoot. Wonder why change of hearts on Abhis part. Did he too find out the real color of ash and her white lies. What happen to the faithful hubby. First stories doing the rounds of them not sleeping together, then him.sleeping around with Bengali beauties and now meeting with wifes ex lover.
The reason I am adking you as you all have minute to minute update on ash and bachan household, and you bunch seem to know all and first hand info.
anyone of you has had a close experience with women abusers can know what it feels like to be in this kind of helpless situation..I'm not referring to only actresses here, but every other woman who has no way out..so to judge or support a woman abuser blindly is wrong, unless you have concrete proof that the guy never did it...

I don't like Ash, never liked her and I never ever comment on articles related to her. When she came out with how Salman treated her, I could strongly tell that she was not lying. because for someone like her who's so guarded about her personal life to come out and make such serious accusation is not to be taken lightly. She was forced to defend herself and she came out with only one simple statement to clarify the end of their toxic relationship and that was after whole India had witnessed the downward spiral of their circus relationship (including its end). There are no more rumors, maybe they're buried before they make it to the print, about Salman having close connections to the underworld. i think that is still going on, it's not easy to break away from the mumbai gangsters unless the star goes broke. It wouldn't surprise me to know that he used those illegal connections to subdue negative press about him and maybe to control others.

excuse me, but it is my business to criticize him, the kind of personality that plays an idol to millions of ppl around the world including really young people. i'm not going to have a blind faith in some overrated bollywood baboon and let my younger siblings or kids in the future watch any of his movies/shows. looking at so many ppl in india, who tend to emulate their favorite star celebrities, it is not far fetched that others will copy him. already domestic abuse is accepted as sort of a norm in India, his erratic and misogynistic behavior only encourages others. if one is a public figure and is a role model to young ppl, then he/she is expected to carry oneself like that in real life too.

I volunteered at a women's shelter 2 years back and they took in lots of abused women, who were beaten up by their husbands (some of which were not in a drunken state)..the professional counselor then told me about this research that was done some time back...

To come out and tell you were physically abused is REALLY embarrassing! Its high time people stop saying Salman hit women, because thats not true. Abuse stories abt Salman started only during the Ashwarya Rai phase. We didn't hear such stories when he was with Somy or sangeeta. I remember they said he poured thumbs up on Somy's table first and then changed it to Somy's head in a few days. But After the Ash episode people changed that old rumor and started saying he broke some bottle on Somy's head to justify Ash's lies. Its wishful thinking to say that Katrina was hit by Salman because she has time and again denied it. and what about the infamous boycott of priyanka chopra by the srk camp, including the tweets attacking priyanka by kjo? i do agree that pc aint entirely innocent, but same goes for srk as well. then why boycott pc alone? it was reported that pc's name was allegedly dropped from the invitation list of agneepath's success party. the pc, who was the female lead of the same film. moreover, the three khans are well past their 40's and soon touching the 50 mark. and yet, they remain the hearthrobs of the nation. while on the other hand, actresses like madhuri dixit, kajol, juhi chawla, tabu, they are only waiting for the right script to come, that happens once in the blue moon. e.g. kajol's fanaah released in 2004 or 2005, after couple of years in 2009 (i guess) her next movie with hubby ajay devgan released, till then there's no news of her working. same goes for madhuri, she waited for a long time and then aaja nachle happened. film bombed at the box-office and till today, she's waiting for the "right" script to come her way. sri devi too waited just like them. and finally english vinglish happened. i cant say the movie would be a success or a dud, but surely after the movie, people would be talking about her performance, but then that's it. she would have to wait for the "right" script again, that i repeat, comes once in a blue moon. this is my bollywood.
