Actress Kareena Kapoor, while speaking on ‘How Does a Heroine Become the Hero?’ at the India Today Conclave 2012 recently, said she didn’t consider herself a hero because the people, who took home all the money for blockbusters like 3 Idiots, RA.One and Bodyguard, were the producers and the three Khans. The 31-year-old actress, who has reportedly demanded 80 million rupees for Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine, admitted that she is not paid at par with male actors and vowed to fight for equal pay cheques.

In this male-dominated industry, Kareena is perhaps the only actress to voice her opinion openly about the disparity in pay. Sheopined that female actors are paid far less than their male counterparts for the same amount of work they do. While the Khans and Kapoors take home a huge packet, actresses have to stay content with their regular fees. Even the top heroines are paid much lesser than the least popular heroes.

Dominance of men in almost every walk of life has been prevailing for ages now. And the entertainment industry is no exemption to this. In Bollywood, most of the films and stories are hero-centered.

Producers argue that there are only four or five superstars who can guarantee returns. Bollywood considers the Khans as the safest bet because majority of their films succeed. “The Khans deserve what they are charging because when you cast them, there’s an assurance that you are going to get your money back,” filmmakers argue.

Male actors get big-budget movies that earn at the box office while women aren’t given the same roles. Heroines are often characterized as glamour dolls and therefore producers are known to give second-hand treatment to actresses in terms of money.

The fee of a heroine for a film is usually less than a quarter of the hero’s. Even an ageing Amitabh Bachchan earns more than a top actress in her twenties. Moreover, unlike their male co-stars, they do not get a share in profits. Most top heroines go by a fixed rate card.

The world of sports is also not aloof from the disparity of payments to females. But Venus Williams showed how to change the practices. In 2007, she not just won the prestigious Wimbledon tournament fourth time, she also became the first woman to receive prize money equal to that of the male winner. Both Venus and the Wimbledon men’s winner took home about $1.4 million.

It all started in 2006 when Venus Williams had written an article on equal pay in The Times (London), and the WTA and UNESCO had asked her to lead a campaign to promote gender equality in sports. Later, Wimbledon announced it would award equal prize money to all competitors. The French Open also awarded both its 2007 women’s and men’s champions the same financial prize.

The same needs to be done with the film industry. Women today have proved their talents and have even outpaced men on various fronts, including acting, direction, screenwriting, film editing and other technical fields. Alike male actors, now heroines are also attending events and shows to promote their films. So when both are putting equal efforts, unequal pay structures are not justified.

If a heroine can attract audiences on the basis of her charm and talent, she must know her worth and quote deserved price for her work. Producers can’t afford for too long to make films without top heroines and will soon come to terms. In any circumstances, a top heroine can’t be replaced with a B-Grade or C-Grade actress. People can digest watching their ageing superstar knocking down 20 goons at a time, but they would not tolerate watching him romancing a 40-plus heroine. The demand for young and talented actresses will always be there.

Moreover, with The Dirty Picture and Kahaani, people have rubbished producers’ claims that the films with women in lead roles don’t work. Good content complimented by mind-blowing performances always produce best results. And such great performances require tremendous mental and physical energy, irrespective of the actor being a male or female. Therefore, it is unfair if the lead heroine is paid less than what a side actor gets.

To claim rightful place in the industry, actresses must pursue the issue till they achieve the desired results. As Kareena Kapoor stated,” Vidya Balan’s success story has given actresses the hope for a brighter tomorrow in Bollywood. But they have a long way to go.”

I think these actress' should be content with getting the salary they get, when hardworking people in other professions will never earn 1 crore and more just by signing on a dotted line for a movie. Kareena has not even done solo films and how long has she been in the film industry again, obviously SHE picked scripts which didn't offer her the same role as her male costars, so she doesn't need to question her salary. Kareena already said in an interview that she won't do movies like Dirty Picture or any other solo project without the khans in it. She admits that they would at least guarantee a movie a hit regardless of the script. Dirty Picture wasn't a hit because of the name unless indian audiences are deaf and dumb that they couldn't get the hint of the story through its previews and going online to read a synopsis of the movie b.f it got released. Purely it was the story and the cast, vidya balan wouldn't be responsible for the success if she didn't know how to act. Kahaani didn't ride on Dirty Picture, it's success due the story and the low budget. Bollywood should restructure their system then the equal salary will follow. Lastly, if there are no good female centric scripts or in general where the script is more important that it will not be exploited for the sake of a male superstar, then kareena doesn't have any basis of bringing this issue. Kareena should first think of the screenwriters and directors out there who are not encouraged to make certain movies. Screenwriters with great stories that unfortunately will not be considered should get better treatment, these are more important issues than kareena's salary.

AMEN!!!!!!! I AGREE 100% ...these dum acteresses thinking about themselves only so they can go out and life the high life, whereas there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes, the ppl who do the work and bring it together... they should be the ones getting paid more.

Anonymous's picture

No, and I am a woman saying this. A woman deserves equal pay when she does equal amount of work , and better pay when she does more work. BUT, with these acteresses, thats not the case. They're simply arm-candy, unless you're talking about Vidya Balan, or any other actually talented acteress. So this leaves out about 90% of these airheads who do not deserve any equal pay. Sorry, girls.

Men and women should get an equal pay rate relative to the amount of screen time the receive in a movie, and the amount of work hours they put it.

NO!!!!!!!!!

Actresses are not the main draw to 90% of indian movies. NO producer would ever risk investing in an actress who really is there to tag along with the main lead hero. Actresses in indian films,75% of the time have less roles than male actors. They are there for songs and dances, add a little sex appeal, and that's about it. Katrina kaif is GARBAGE for example as an actress, she's there for her looks and thats it. does she deserve equal pay??? HECK NO.

there are very deserving actresses but their roles are always less superior to the male counter part ,mostly all the time. This is bollywood we don't have real actresses these days, we have a few like kareena, rani , pc that's about it, all others are just "models" pretty faces, who shake some legs and call it a night. How many actresses in bollywood can do demanding, challenging roles? We used to have madhuri, sri devi, rekha, shabana azmi. U think DEEPIKA PADUKONE can do n e thing these women did haha ? THOSE actresses deserved equal pay not the crap like kat, deepika, jaquline, etc...

Women oriented films in india BOMB horribly...... Dirty picture was an exception but looking back it's pretty consistant with the indian public.

Pay should be determined by the role and demand of the character.

Anonymous's picture

If you carry a movie on your shoulders- you will get the bulk of the pay- fair and square. I think she did a wonderful job in chameli- and acc to the budget, she should have been paid accordingly. Tabu, shabana etc make decent money b/c they can CARRY amovie on their shoulders.

NO MATTER WHAT U SAY, PC IS BY FAR PRETTIER AND BETTER ACTRESS THAN KAREENA

Anonymous's picture

oh gosh!!! so many kareena haters barking here!!!
The 2 films EMAET and MBKD were entirely different. mbkd was a bit raunchy and massy it had good songs which worked in the favor of the film whereas Emaet was only targeted for the city youth and that too for multiplex audience. y cant u people appreciate the fact that despite being just an average movie it made over 40 crores in India.
EVen if u want to criticise sumone please do it atleast with true and relevant facts like the box office collection of MBKD was 58 crores in india and 3.6 million ( 16-17 crore ) overseas whereas for EMAET the collections were 40 crores in india and 4 million ( overseas ).
i completely agree that katrina has much more fan following & audience pulling power than any other current working actress but thats true for only indian audience. overseas kareena is more popular than katrina.
well my point is that the paycheck shud be based on the talent and role of an actress. Few days back i was watching a film KYON KI ( 2005 ) i liked kareena s acting much more than salman. salman acting was truely artificial & fake he was hamming in some shots whereas kareena was purely natural . but the amount salman gets is 10 times more than kareenas.
i guess there shud be a system where actress has a fixed basic pay which depends upon the role and their shud be provision for sharing the profits just like actors.
PV please post this!!!!!

They should get good amount but for those movies in which they are playing prominent roles. They don't deserve equal amounts for their cameo kind of roles in movies like bebo in 3 idiot, pc in agneepath or kat in znmd.

Anonymous's picture

Not equal pay but somewhere close to them. Priyanka, kareena, vidya, katrina and rani. All deserve good amount except deepika, sonam, sonakshi, etc.

Anonymous's picture

Priyanka was superb in 7km whether anyone accept it or not.

Anonymous's picture

For each its own. I think bebo, vidya and pc are superb in acting. But bebo is good in eye candy role and glamarous role and vidya is superb in drama and powerful role but priyanka is good at all whether its drama, action, romance etc etc. She deserve the highest amount followed by vidya and bebo.

Anonymous's picture

What makes laugh all the time is people constantly saying vidya and pc are the only talented heroines. Please people don't make laugh. Vdya is a great actress but excuse me PC BIG NO .....I watched 7KM and what I say is her acting sucks. Big time artificial just like face plastic. Kareena is actually heaps better than her. She should win best actress for HEROINE. fingers crossed. And to whom who said kareena has done plastic surgery. I think better he needs to do eyes surgery coz they are not working well.she is looking perfectly fine.

Anonymous's picture

is this photo of kareena taken before she got her surgery done? look at her cheeks and lips and eyes,
they are not like nowadays kareena at all!

Oxygen's picture

Probably No,Probably Yes! Completely depends on the kind of role and the work they do.Like eg. Angelina did a Salt which was offered to Tom Cruise first. So she will and must get paid the same as his(though I don't know if she got it).

Anonymous's picture

yes heroine also can ask for equal pay..that's very true....but it's unfair movie like 3 idiots and ra.one for asking equal payments...because she hadn't much scenes to act in those films.

fleur's picture

I believe that if good movies are made, good audiences will also be found. The fact is that producers actually play a big role in determining the audience as well, again, a cyclic effect.

fleur's picture

Why not? Dare I say that if heroines get paid as much, maybe they will also be given roles that are as substantial (or insubstantial as the case may be) as heroes. The fact that heroines are paid less probably feeds into how they get terrible parts where they dance around the hero or shed requisite tears. Frankly I don't remember the last time I watched a mainstream bollywood movie. I am just bored by them. And the way they deal with gender is just irritating. It's not even enough to get angry about, so I would say it's just boring.

Of course everyone will point to Vidya. Vidya is a great exception, but that's what she is, an exception, and this is not the norm for most heroines in the Hindi cinema industry, or in fact, any of the commercial regional ones either.

Anonymous's picture

A key driver of this issue is that many Actor's have decision making power as to who will be cast opposite them in their films. To me this is a control issue, where Actresses are literally begging Actors to work with them. We need that situation to be flipped on its head, and I hope to see our leading ladies get behind the camera, take control and change the structure of the industry.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA HAS THE MOST FANS FROM BOLLYWOOD IN TWITTER. ALSO, SOME ACTORS LIKE ABHISHEK BACHAN WHO GIVE FLOPS 24/7 DON'T DESERVE MANY MONEY THAN SUPER TALENTED KAREENA KAPOOR, MADHURI DIXIT, PRIYANKA CHOPRA OR OTHER SUPERSTAR HEROINES.

Anonymous's picture

@Do you guys know that even Abhishek Bacchan gets a few crores, even though he can't carry a movie on his shoulders at all? It was reported in a newspaper that he let go an amount of 2.5 crores for Players as the movie did not do well?? Shouldn't he rpay back most of his producers then..... does he even deserve 50 lakhs.. NO!!!!!!
You are obviously some blind hater jealous of Abhishek. Do you guys know that even Abhishek Bacchan gets a few crores? what do you mean EVEN? He has given numerous successful movies in the past, why shouldn't he get the market rate of A lister actors?

Yes, after the debacle of Raavan , he is being tagged as flop, and that's why people are not going to watch his movies, however good they are . Players was good, suspense thriller, unfortunately people didn't bother to watch it. And he is entitled to what he gets paid. Why should he return the money? If your logic is film flopped, so actors should return 100 %money, then on same grounds, if movie is a hit, then actors should be give 100 % profit of the movie by producers. Dostana , got upto 80-85 crore SOLELY because of AB Jr comic timing. In that case, then Karan Johar should pay AB Jr 80 crore. Why dont you go and ask him to do that before coming and ranting your nonesense here?

PC compares with VB??? Fashion compares with Kahaani??? ROFL!!!!!! GIMME A FRIGGING BREAK! PC is plastic!

Anonymous's picture

Only VB deserves this as she is the ONLY one who can carry a movie on her shoulders entirely and not act a quivering damsel in distress like bebo was in AV....She just stands around in all the movies, no more than a prop so she defo does not!

Anonymous's picture

Although Katrina is not fluent with india language but I think she brought so much audience 2 the cinema. MBKD is clear example with EKMET as someone said.

Katrina and Imran MKKD= 80 CRORE

Kareena and Imran EKMET= 40 CRORE

Imagine all this gab, she even deserves more than Imran khan. That shows the power of KATRINA

Anonymous's picture

IN TERMS OF ACTING WITH THE KHANS, ANY ACTRESS CAN B CAST AND THE MOVIE WILL B BLOCKBUSTER. IF KAREENA THINKS HER PRICE SHOULD B HIKE SORRY, THE ARE FRESH AND NICE FACES OUT THERE WANTING 2 CAST THEM. SHE IS EVEN AGING, SO SHE IS NOT AS RELEVANT AS SHE USE 2 B. FROM INVISIBLE PRODUCER.
