Credits: Indiewire Currently there is a huge controversy about white girls Playing Indian roles .So what do you think about Dusky beauty like Freida playing the role of an Italian? Freida Pinto is Cast as an Italian Journalist in her upcoming film to directed by Bafta award winning director Nick Broomfield .She will Star opposite Dan Stevens from hit UK TV series Downton Abbey.It is an adaptation of a Belgian Congo period romance novel titled The Catastrophist, written by Ronan Bennett.The book was a bestseller after it was published in 2007. Here's Amazon's synopsis of the novel: James Gillespie, a disillusioned Irish historian turned novelist, has arrived in the Congo on the eve of independence, hoping to reunite with his Italian lover, Ines. The two had once been passionately involved in Europe, but Ines's job as a journalist took her to the Congo, where her Communist leanings have kept her. Ines is an enthusiastic supporter of Patrice Lumumba, and her journalism reflects her bias. Gillespie, on the other hand, has a novelist's broader view, and his ability to see all facets of the issue simultaneously keeps him from choosing sides and drives a wedge between him and Ines. As she becomes more involved with Lumumba and his followers, he is befriended by an American CIA agent whom Ines suspects of being an enemy. When the political situation heats up, she puts herself increasingly in harm's way until, at last, Gillespie must put his own life on the line to save hers... As far as I'm aware Italians vary in skin colour, therefore she could def pass off as one.
I am a Pathan girl and no one thinks that I'm remotely asian and I have always (since my school days to present) have been considered full European. People are always shocked and don't believe me when I tell them I'm 100% pure Asian ( it doesn't help as I am extremely fair). They always think I have to at least be a mix. So I guess if you have it then flaunt it!
I personally don't think she can pass as Italian ... unless her character is an Italian woman with a different (i.e., South Asian) ethnic background, or something.
But her not looking Italian (to me, at least) has nothing to do with her skin color. I just find that Freida has very typical Indian features -- the eyes, especially. It would be like casting Penelope Cruz as a Middle Eastern woman. Even with makeup, she'd still look European.

No. Romeo & Juliet takes place in italy and look at how artists have drawn them. White,pale looking people. Freida looks like a dohti washer in india.

If Americans can have origins anywhere in the world and be a mixture of ethnicities, who is to say that an Italian can't? I am half Italian, bearing an Italian name and sporting a dark hue because I am a mixture. I say, it's about time! Kudos to the casting agent!

She only looks indian. Way too dark and does not posses italian,latino,greek,spanish,palistenian features. Whover is writing all those comments that she can pass off as any races is delueded. She was called micast for all of those roles she had played in those movies. Look up pic of Freida without any photoshopping/skin enhancement and you will she how dark and indianl ooking she really is.

Italian? I don't know that's a bit of a stretch. Definitely she could play Native/Central/South American, Middle Eastern, South Asian but let's see how she portrays an Italian... should be interesting. As an actor it would be a challenge, and she's a good sport for taking up that challenge! I wonder what answer Italian people would have for this question?

so much debate.....she gets a role she takes it...it doesn't matter she is making a name for herself. Aishwarya Rai is more selective because of her age and also, FAMILY. FP is young and obviously enjoy every new experience, she has a very likable and approachable personality.
She has that "it" factor if you will and by being likeable, she is able to differentiate herself from others. This provide her with a competitive edge over her competition [>Aishwraya Rai who is very selective and unapproachable] - to win the eyes of the big movie moguls in Hollywood you have to display a genuine interest in the business because big $$$$$$ riding on you!.
Freida is well on her way...and each new venture she is one step more up the ladder!

Get real people, the world is multicultural and there is no way of looking as per your nationality. As one comment below stated we are getting closer to the Hitlers view by saying who should look like what. There must not be a comparison between the post about foreign white girls playing indian roles, and an indian playing an italian role. The first one has to do with India's obsession with white skin and caucasian looking girls whereas in Italy there is no such strong illusion or expextation of looking white. Besides, Freida could easily look like somebody from the south of Spain. Don't forget that Spain was ruled by muslims for 800 years with jewish and christians living together from the different parts of the world. It is a melting pot. If anyone of you on this website had the opportunity of travelling or read history books then you will understand exactly what I am talking about. This post personally has to grounds to compare what Abhishek kapoor said about foreigh girls working in Bollywood, in mostly commercial movies, where it is over acted, lots of dancing with white girls as back up dancers and all that and Freida playing such a high end role with a script basically resting on herself and Dan Stevens. How do Aishwarya or Sonam look italiano? They look indian and same with Freida. I would say that They could proably pass off as other races like middle-eastern though.
She looks desi and tries to act europeon by faking queens accent and trying so hard to look like posh spice. She is white wananbe herself.

hahaha Aish madam went around claiming that she was mistaken for a french woman often times but all the international movie roles she got were of an Indian lady. Even in the last legion she plays a warrior princess from Kerala. All along she went around bleaching her skin & hair and trying to look very firangi but look at Freida she gets all the truly multi-ethinic roles effortlessly, Freida is having the last laugh & I am laughing with her
