English Vinglish Reviews
Here are the reviews for English Vinglish: Ratings:4/5 Reviewer: Taran Adarsh Site:Bollywood Hungama ENGLISH VINGLISH is the story of a woman who struggles with English and is made to feel insecure by her family and society at large. The film depicts the touching and transformational journey of a housewife, Shashi [Sridevi]. Circumstances make her resolute to prevail over this lack of confidence, master the language, teach the world a lesson or two on the way to becoming a self-assured and confident woman. Sure, masala movies are great fun, but a film like ENGLISH VINGLISH breaks the monotony, shatters the unwritten rules of the game and scores brownie points. Cinema is rapidly changing and one can connect with viewers across the globe even without making the usual mainstream Hindi movie. ENGLISH VINGLISH proves it! On the whole, ENGLISH VINGLISH is a remarkable motion picture. It's amusing, emotional, heartrending and also insightful. An inspiring film with an overwhelming message. A must-watch for every parent, every child. Strongly recommended. Ratings:- Reviewer: Joe Lydon Site:Variety Popular Indian thesp Sridevi returns to the screen after a 15-year hiatus with "English Vinglish," a sprightly star vehicle that finds her perfectly cast as an attractive yet old-fashioned homebody who elevates her sense of worth by becoming bilingual. Pic occasionally resembles a broadly played U.S. sitcom, as Shashi amusingly interacts with a multiethnic cross-section of fellow students.Far more often, though, "English Vinglish" is traditional Bollywood escapism, a lightly enjoyable trifle featuring exuberant musical interludes, an extremely chaste approach to conjugal relations and extramarital temptation, and a crowdpleasing wrap-up that allows the lead character to be all she can be while still respecting family values. Ratings: - 3/5 stars Site: Koimoi.com Further, Anupama Chopra tweeted, "@SrideviBKapoor is absolute magic in English Vinglish. A 15-year sabbatical but not a trace of rust. Welcome back! "

Watched it twice so far! It's awesome and simple.
Watched English Vinglish last night and really enjoyed it. It was a sweet feel-good movie and you just can't take your eyes off Sridevi. Watching Sridevi was an ~*absolute pleasure*~ and she was pitch perfect as Shashi the timid housewife who eventually finds her voice.
Amitabh Bachchan in his cameo was cute and added a touch of class and humour to the film. There is a tribute line to him in the opening credits: "100 years of Indian Cinema, 70 years of Amitabh Bachchan, Thank You Amitabh Bachchan!" Very sweet!
Yes the plot was predictable and some of the supporting characters could have been fleshed out a bit better by the script/director but these are minor complaints because in the end SRIDEVI steals the show! Watch English Vinglish for Sridevi! :)
Not a cheerful Friday. Of the two films that released today – Sridevi’s much-awaited English Vinglish (EV) and Vivek Oberoi and Mallika Sherawat’s Kismat Love Paisa Dilli (KLPD) – English Vinglish opened to a less-than average response and the latter was a disappointment.
English Vinglish, directed by Gauri Shinde, marks the return of Sridevi to the big screen after a hiatus of 15 long years. The film was also screened at the Toronto Film Festival recently. Despite its low-key opening, distributors feel English Vinglish will pick up as the day unfolds.
In Mumbai, Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines says, “The opening of EV pan-India was about 25 to 30 per cent, and it was the same in Mumbai. KLPD was a bigger disappointment. Its opening all-India and in Mumbai was just about 10 per cent.”
In Gujarat, Ajay Bagdai of Rajvi Trade Link adds, “EV is meant for a niche audience but its business should pick up with the evening and night shows. It opened to a 20-per cent occupancy in Gujarat. KLPD too took a 20-per cent opening but we’re not expecting much from this film.”
GD Mehta of Bobby Arts International says, “The opening of EV was 25-30 per cent. The film will pick up by word-of-mouth publicity. KLPD, surprisingly, opened on a good note, at 40 to 45 per cent.”
Surendra Saluja of Lakshya Movies says the reports of EV are “so-so” and it opened to 20-25 per cent. “We are expecting the film to do better as the day proceeds. But there is no scope for improvement for KLPD, which opened to just 15 per cent.”
In CP, Sarang Chandak of Shri Rang Films reveals, “The reports of both EV and KLPD are not good and both films opened at 10 and 8 per cent, respectively.”
BH Basha of Bahar Enterprises concludes, “In Mysore, EV opened to 20 per cent and KLPD 5-10 per cent. There is no hope from KLPD but, as far as EV is concerned, we have to wait and watch.”
Both Kismet (Kismat) Love Paisa Dilli (KLPD) and English Vinglish opened to really poor box office collections today morning. Sridevi’s English Vinglish was slightly better with an average occupancy rate of 15-20% whereas Kismet (Kismat) Love Paisa Dilli (KLPD) fell flat with just 10%.
Kismet (Kismat) Love Paisa Dilli (KLPD) and English Vinglish Movie Posters
As expected English Vinglish was better at the multiplexes than that of KLPD and vice versa for single screen theaters. From the looks of it the opening day collections of both these movies are going to be pretty small unless there is a magical surge in the evening.
The new releases, it seems is facing some stiff competition from the well performing Barfi! and OMG Oh My God! Collections of both the releases, however, are sure to witness a growth during the weekend.
Komal has rated English Vinglish beyond stars. It has been wrongly stated that komal gives it just 3 stars. Koi moi is not komal.
Is boxofficeindia saying Paresh Rawal in 2nd week will beat Sridevi 1st day ;-)
Wont cross more than 35 crore net in India at any cost , average fare at ticket window
First day : 4 crores
First weekend 15 crores
First week: 22 crores
Lifetime : 30-35 (max)
Reason : No single screen biz, no male face, OhMyGod
Pinkvilla_boy..is that your pic? you are so cute
get sum younger girl man..why after a 30 plus Kareena and a 50 year old Sridevi ;-0
From boxofficeindia
There will be two new release this week in the form of English Vinglish and Kismat Love Paisa Dilli but OMG! Oh My God will also behave like a new release making it a three way battle at the box office.
The way OMG! Oh My God has sustained over the weekdays means that it is almost certain that will get the best occupancies on Friday with collections being determined how the screen space is divided between the three films.
The two new releases are not initial films and depend on word of mouth so there is a good chance that OMG! Oh my God will be the number one film on Friday beating the new releases.
feels good to hear so many positive reviews for the film. If this film works, it will open avenues to lots of actresses to return to work in their mid life. Its heartwarming to see that indian audience is finally coming of age and accepting real women in cinema rather than just eye candy teeny boppy girls!
ndtv has given just 2.5..so it clearly Mouth Publicity wins for this film..but Box Office..not make 100 cr club as this film is made by only 16CR and it will definately gain max 50CR. so it will be HIT but not BLOCK BUSTER..
Something magical is going to happen on Friday......I CANT WAIT!
BOX OFFICE TRADE REPORT: With both Barfi & OMG slowing down now, English Vinglish has come just at the right time and will get a good opening.
Good to see & hear some good reviews!!!
looking forward to watchthis movie on this weekend :)
Love to see the movie soon.
WHAT 4/5 im so happpyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
want to see this!
wish it will be hit. feel good that movie Barfi, EV, kahani gets appreciates.
Komal Nahata gave it 3/5
Bollywood Life agve it 3/5
Both called it a bit slow despite it being just 2 hr 10 mns
I think Oh My God and Barfi will hamper its prospects. Oh My God caught on at the wrong time for EV
Best thing about English Vinglish is that it's total budget is an estimated 18 crores and to be declared a HIT, it only needs to earn 35 crores in its first week. Given that the film is coming in 3 different languages, that will be all the more easy
All major critics have given the film a BIG BIG THUMBS UP!!! Apart from Taran Adarsh who gave it 4/5, here are the rest who tweeted:
RAJEEV MASAND (CNN-IBN) : English Vinglish is so charming...formulaic but feel-good. Has a big beating heart at its centre, and that's Sridevi, who's just terrific.
ANUPAMA CHOPRA (Star World) : Sri is absolute magic in English Vinglish. A 15-year sabbatical but not a trace of rust. Welcome back!
BHAWANA SOMAYA (Screen) : Watched Balki's English Vinglish. Super film and a sparkling performance. The empress is back!!
SHOBHA DE: Paresh Rawal and Sridevi - Actors of the Year! The rest are just successful stars!
BHARATHI PRADHAN (Film Street Journal) - Sometimes things jst fall into place... EnglishVinglish a perfect comebak for Sridevi!!!
SUBHASH K JHA: 4.5/5 - 'Sublime,subtle,seductive,engaging.. English Vinglish is a life-changing experience. It turns around the male gaze, making patriarchal tyranny seem like an acceptable tradition that we never thought we needed to break .With oodles of persuasive charm, director Gauri Shinde's film breaks down the bastion of male pride with a film that generations will look back on with affection.Ms Shinde's debut is on a par with Aparna Sen's 36 Chowringhee Lane.As for the incandescent Sridevi, was she really gone for for 16 years? She makes today's supposedly cool actresses look like jokes. If you see only 2 films a year make sure you see English Vinglish...twice!'
FIRSTPOST BOLLYWOOD: 5/5 - Sridevi brings acting back in English Vinglish.

WOW ...CAN'T WAIT ANYMORE..SEEMS LIKE THIS MOVIE IS A HIT....THE EMPRESS ARRIVES WITH A BANG...
There have been more reviews out and they are all very positive. Im looking forward to this film. Box office and all is difficult to predict. But I'm sure the film will be loved and will make money.
Welcome back Sri ji :P
Canada globe and mail
Bollywood tours Manhattan in this formulaic feel-good film as a conservative Indian housewife burdened with an ungrateful and disrespectful family rediscovers her self-esteem by sneaking off to English lessons during a visit to New York for a family wedding. The film is often winsome; as is its star, Bollywood favourite Sridevi, as the implausibly neglected wife, but it winds up trapped by the social and cultural hierarchies it seeks to question.
Good movie it maybe, but average at box office
It will have to contend woth Oh My God that has caught on like crazy, Barfi already doing strong and Aiyaa week after, so not much breathing space. I expect a 25 crore net 1st week at max and maybe 30-32 crore overall net making it average
As an actor what matters is he/she is able to deliver! Whether they can speak english/hindi etc should not be anyone's major concern.
Prior to the official release of the film on October 5, English Vinglish was specially screened for several actors in the Indian film fraternity and received unanimous praise.
Amitabh Bachchan tweeted "English Vinglish" a delightful film, tender, soft, beautiful, relevant .. Sridevi immaculate, director Gauri Shinde .. YMUP !!" and later wrote in his blog that "A viewing of “English Vinglish” directed by Gauri Shinde, wife of R Balki tonight, leaves me with collective lumps in the throat and a surge of flushed eyes near the tear ducts. And it is not all the emotion of a particular moment that puts one in such state. It is the uncontrollable effect of appreciation that prevents one from expressing any at all."
Superstar Rajnikanth also praised the film and said "Sridevi has lived the character."
Ace dim Kher]] tweeted that "English Vinglish is Spectacularly Beautiful. Film with a Golden Heart. Take a bow Gauri Shinde.Sridevi, ORIGINAL QUEEN OF CINEMA is BACK.:)"
Many actors also voiced their excitement after watching the promos of the film. Hrithik Roshan predicted that the film will be a success and even postponed his travel plans to attend the premiere.
Salman Khan also cancelled his shoot for a day to travel back to Mumbai for the premiere.
Anil Kapoor called Sridevi '"the best actress'" and said that he was expecting "a great performance."
Konkona Sen Sharma also tweeted "Have to say I'm really looking forward to watching Sridevi in her new film English Vinglish!"
Eminent critic Taran Adarsh gave the film a high score of 4/5 saying "ENGLISH VINGLISH is a remarkable motion picture. It's amusing, emotional, heartrending and also insightful. An inspiring film with an overwhelming message. A must-watch for every parent, every child. Strongly recommended!"
The review from UK also gave it 4/5 and called the film "a hilarious, touching, sensitive, and sweet film that marks the triumphant come back of India's biggest female star...Sridevi."
A review from Canada said the film "leaves you with sweet after taste, just like a ladoo to be savoured and enjoyed with every bite. So bite into English Vinglish, it's just delicious!"
