The pilot episode of the hugely anticipated Aamir Khan's TV debut 'Satyamev Jayate' was aired today. Though the format of the show was closely guarded, one kind of had an inkling about it.

In today's episode Aamir Khan talked about one of the most grave issues affecting India - female infanticide. Women who were forced to or unknowingly aborted a girl child were interviewed. The aam junta were asked about thier views on various aspects of the issue.

Now coming to my question. What were you thoughts on this episode? I being a huge Oprah fan felt the need for this kind of a show in India. Though Aamir does not come close to Oprah in all departments, I did feel the issue was well discussed and many a myths busted which is the need of the day.

Aamirs expressions looked a bit contrived at times. But I am going to forgo my teeny-weeny discomforts regarding the episode for the sake of the bigger issue being discussed. At any time, I did not feel I was watching Aamir the star which I think is a huge achievement.

I really hope the episode gathers mass viwership and does create a positive impact in our society and in the Indian minds. This show I feel must become a required viewing for all Indians.

P.S: After long I watched TV with my mom and family that too on a Sunday morning. Brings back memories from the good old DD days.

Satyamev Jayate. Jai Hindustan!

Please appreciate the fact that a big star has agreed to host the show that might have a positive impact on our society and might be vehicle for more such shows in the future and might persuade more celebrities to do something for society with their influence and star power. I personally think if indian government give real priorities for women to get jobs in the government sector or charge less fees in the college / university, or priorities for admission in medical colleges and engineering colleges. It can make a huge change. With money/ job comes power and respect and a voice so that others cannot persuade or force them to do such evil acts. But even after that someone wants to kill their own child then it is better that way, cos just imagine the plight of this child with these monsters.....cant help being emotional..

Anyone who thinks that Aamir Khan has agreed to host this program purely for putting light on the plight of the less fortunate in India are fooling themselves. Yes he should be commended for agreeing to host a show that highlights the problems in India that need to be discussed and solved, but he clearly also has self interest in hosting this program. I am hearing things like "he is a superhero" etc...well forgive me for saying it, but superheroes don't charge 3-5 crore rupees to help the less fortunate! They do it for free and without any self interest!

Aamir Khan has both financial interest and self-promotion interest in this. I can guarantee that he is sitting and holding his breath waiting for the TRPs to be released to see if he has beaten Amitabh Bachchan's record of highest TRPs so far for KBC. He might say otherwise, but that is what he does. He always wants to be the no. 1 in everything, no wonder he keeps an eye on the box office collections of the movies of his contemporaries!

The only thing he should be lauded for is for agreeing to host this show. That is it! The people who should be commended are the ones at Star Plus who came with the concept of this show and put their money into it. Sadly no one is talking about them. As if Aamir Khan is a one man army who is doing everything related to this show all by himself. Clearly not! He is just the public face of this show!

And the person who should be really and actually commended for bringing the original idea of highlighting the plight of the less fortunate through a tv show is Oprah Winfrey! She herself comes from a very less fortunate background and had a hard childhood. She is a self made woman! A true story of rags to riches! She wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth like Aamir Khan. And yes Satyamev Jayate is a copy of The Oprah Winfrey Show, nobody can deny that and nobody should! Give credit where it is due!

So first it is Oprah Winfrey who really needs praise, then the people at Star Plus for copying her show and conceptualizing it for an Indian audience with Indian issues and then putting their money into it, then last of them all Aamir Khan for just agreeing to host this show and being the public face of it!

I might also add, he was being too rehearsed and trying too hard to look and feel sad during the show. Being more natural can help him and the show a lot more.

Thank you!!!! I wanted to post something along the same lines, but you already put it so well!

This is a copy of the Oprah Winfrey Show and Aamir Khan is making money from India's problems by charging so much per episode! Sad!

Everyone in India already know that these problems exist, so what is the point of repeating them again and again??? Instead someone should do something to fix these problems, and please not by charging 3 cr per issue!

It was like a documentary very similar to what has already been shown on discovery and nat geo. The difference was, they weren't hosted by a 'superstar' and hence the adulation. If it had really strived to be different, it should have bought in the perpetrators and talked to them, delved into their point of view and tried changing that. It is a known fact that baby girls are killed in India and it is a known fact that many social workers have been fighting this evil. But the crime, that starts with the family, should be addressed at the root level. Talking to victims will help you sympathize with them but not solve the issues.

@Bollywood

Darling for your kind information, the money generated from SMS will be donated to NGOs working for issue of female foeticide. It is not meant to generate revenue for Aamir, STAR or Airtel. There have been other shows, but no show raised funds for the issue being discussed! Here they are raising funds for cause through SMS, details of donations and by online clicks on Satyamev Jayate site where donations will be made for each click!

No other show has ever had such massive scale or dubbed in so many different languages and shown on different countries. No show provided a guide to take action like they did.

And Aamir was good as a host. You don't need to be loud or jump around in a show on social issues!

Aamir making money off of India's problems.

A lot ppl may say Aamir is being pretentious due to the way he spoke and all. But seriously people, he is actually like that in reality. HAHHAHAHAA. He genuinely has that body language and style and tone of speech. So it's not fake.

filmychica's picture

I really hope, this show will help bring a positive change amongst the Indian people. It's high time.

Aamir is always hatke! He makes everything better :D

Liked the show a lot, Aamir's star power will hopefully reel in good viewership numbers to hold the trps and let it run till the end. Regards to first episode, one thing he didn't touch upon is the social practices leading to female infanticide, which range from the still widely prevalant dowry practice, the girl's family almost always bearing the marriage costs, to the girls being sent to live with the in-laws after marriage and not expected/looked down on, to help out their parents after marriage. If this mindset can change that will also help a lot!

Very good attempt and a very moving show. It was well researched and informative. Nice to see perspectives from all angles - victims to doctors, social workers, people from both urban areas and rural areas. Kudos to Aamir for taking this initiative. He was good as a host. This show did not need hosting like a usual entertainment show. Aamir was understated, warm and no-nonsense. At times in the end it seemed he could have cried a little less. Overall a great effort and truly a refreshing change on TV!

The promos looked very very promising and i was actually waiting for the show. But what a massive let down it was. The execution was pathetic, Aamir's reactions looked rehearsed and there was no novelty what so ever. We have had shows like this before (better ones actually). Obviously the sms thingy is nothing but the means to generate revenue. Nothing will come off at the end. And he talks about changing the society and charges 3 crs per episode for that..LOL!! some visionary he is.

At 11am, my son fast asleep & my daughter ready & dressed to go out (both grown up), along with my wife were shaken out of their routine and go so rivetted to the TV that they just could not leave till 12:30pm. This show can spark a real revolution & that too right where it matters most (in our hearts). Aamir! Thank you for loving your motherland, we could see that you care and also would like us to care!

i think it sort of lacked the fire.. the topic, which was so sinister, dint get the right treatment..and aamir's expressions seemed weird n rehearsed, for some reason he ws lookin down a lot..'baat dil pe nahi lagi!!'..

Wonderful show, it has been made very well with facts, examples, statistics and truth.
Very well planned and wholesome approach to the issue. God Bless Aamir for coming up with this thought and executing it.

Excellent show. Hats off to Aamir Khan for thinking up a show like this and have the guts to do it.
Hats off to the producers and channels for airing it and believing in this concept.
I agree, I did not see Aamir the actor, but the human. I admire Aamir even more now.
I hope many people will watch this program and implement it right away so that India and the world become a better place.
