The pilot episode of the hugely anticipated Aamir Khan's TV debut 'Satyamev Jayate' was aired today. Though the format of the show was closely guarded, one kind of had an inkling about it.

In today's episode Aamir Khan talked about one of the most grave issues affecting India - female infanticide. Women who were forced to or unknowingly aborted a girl child were interviewed. The aam junta were asked about thier views on various aspects of the issue.

Now coming to my question. What were you thoughts on this episode? I being a huge Oprah fan felt the need for this kind of a show in India. Though Aamir does not come close to Oprah in all departments, I did feel the issue was well discussed and many a myths busted which is the need of the day.

Aamirs expressions looked a bit contrived at times. But I am going to forgo my teeny-weeny discomforts regarding the episode for the sake of the bigger issue being discussed. At any time, I did not feel I was watching Aamir the star which I think is a huge achievement.

I really hope the episode gathers mass viwership and does create a positive impact in our society and in the Indian minds. This show I feel must become a required viewing for all Indians.

P.S: After long I watched TV with my mom and family that too on a Sunday morning. Brings back memories from the good old DD days.

Satyamev Jayate. Jai Hindustan!

True! As the founding father of India Mahatma Gandhi said: "Be the change you wish to see in the world!"

Aamir's own life is certainly not a good example of how good changes could be brought into the society. It would have been better to bring positives changes in the society through his own example first, instead of hosting a show that only talks about the issues and doesn't really do much to solve them. Sadly it is too late for him to make his own life an example of positive change...

those saying its a copy of oprah n how aamir khan is making loadsa money - didnt oprah make huge amunts of money too?
-------------------------------

Oprah made lots of money through her own hard work. She was born in a very poor family and had nothing as a child except a hard life. She became the rich woman she is today on her own. I agree with the anon @ 18:05 below. She is a self made woman and true story of rags to riches. She has been through it all, that is why she understands the issues very well, and since most of her life passed in hardship, she decided to do something for others going through hardship. That is how the Oprah Winfrey Show started, and then every other person on the planet started cheating her, including now Aamir Khan. Aamir Khan is totally opposite of Oprah. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and the money he is making right now from this show is not the same as Oprah!

Yeah long live saint Aamir Khan! The socially conscious man who ditched his wife and kids for another women! *roll eyes*

How about he make an episode of Satyamev Jayate on the issue of unfortunate high rates of divorce in India and then call his own ex-wife and children as guests (read victims) on the show and then ask them how they feel and what should be done to eradicate this problem?!

Change starts with ourselves! First we should put our own lives in order and then go out about changing the society. Clearly Aamir Khan's own life is NOT a great example of how the society should be!

I really don't understand some ppl on Pinkvilla. So what if Aamir is charging 3crores for hosting the show???At least he's getting out the message he wants to,a very, very important message about real India. I think such ppl just like to see the Karan Johar side of India which is not even 50% of our country. And whenever any westerner shows our country as they know it we all love to attack them because all we want to see is skyscrapers, malls, rich babus rolling I money, buying expensive clothes, gals in hot pants getting dirty in bars, etc, etc.,all such stuff which makes us want to forget that we live in a country where poverty line is very high. Instead of being such cry babies Aamir is at least making an effort to try to make a better India & all he gets is some jealous losers complaining all the time about how much he charges for the show. Go look at the amount of money SRK rolls in for dancing at shaadis & awards & opening his big mouth in crap fests like Zor Ka Jhatka. The only reason Aamir is not as popular as SRK is because he doesn't like the boots of NRI's & Johars & Chopras & award managers.

The first episode was simply awesome...what a topic to begin with...female infanticide...I have seen an educated family wanting a male child and can go to any extent for him...this show has the potential to bring out a massive change in our thoughts...Television has a much greater reach now due to which people can become more aware, more thoughtful..a bit more sensitive...talking about Aamir khan charging for this show...he never claimed that he will do it for free...no other actors have the courage to debut on TV with such a concept ...what are we doing for this society?? Even if we are contributing towards something positive for our country...does it have the same impact as made by any celebrity or a famous cricketer??? Celebrities have fame to their side which, if used effectively, can instil positive thoughts/may change the society norms...For comparisons with Oprah...how does it matter if it's inspired from her show??the whole idea is to bring out a change(no matter how small it is) in our conventional thinking...Oprah may be really good..but Aamir khan is no bad(can't trash the show because he is already a celebrity)....yes, no one will do it for free...Also every channel has to earn profit in order to sustain..and thus they make take some cinematic liberty...however note : Aamir Khan's company is one of the producers of this show..Thus considering these trivial points, we can't ignore the show...can't ignore the positive side of this show..I am sure we all will definitely watch all episodes of SJ..for some to discuss negative points here on pinkvilla, for some to enlighten their facts and for others to change their thinking...

3 idiots overrated......lol!!!!!!! i know jealousy speaking out here.....pity on srk fans

Does not matter why he did the show, the fact is at the end of the day we are to get the message from it, Change needs to happen, people need to pay attention to the issues even if they are repeated because we have to be good humans, thats all, just good humans! All those complaining are probably the bad ones anyways they cannot just accept and stop critizing, look at the good in things not the bad.

i am shahrukh fan but i dont like all his movies...
i am not a aamir khan fan but i like his movies..

i liked the below comment except for the one about Ra one...i didnt liked ra one...but i am his fan because he is an actor who brings smile on your face...and he is a great entertainer too including a great host..its his choice what movies he wants to do..

about aamir he makes movies sometimes on social issues and movies often have a message...i admire him for that..

for satyamev jayate...yes it is overhyped...for the simple reason being such programs has been hosted by many people before...and they have done without monetary gains...

i admire aamir that he has made a show on these issues and it is reaching the masses...

the show should show true emotions because the issues are real and those people narrating their issues are real..

i dont follow a thing just because a star has done it..good things should be appreciated whether its done by a common man or a star...

i saw the show for five minutes and switched it off...because the promos showed something else...i was expecting something else...the promos should have highlighted the format/content because the issues were so powerful that it could gone positive only...also i switched it off because i have watched such shows and the desire to help and understand issues and people should come from within and one can get the message either from a not so hyped show or from Aamir's show...people should not forget about these issues or the concerns after the 13 episodes..but this should be implemented by each of us...thats what the message of Aamir's show too..the change has to come from each one of us..

jai hind !! satyamev jayate...

Show was great! change will happen once people see how one wrong act leads to many..
Any person who wants to make a difference or care for people will always be criticized.
People who can't or DON'T want to contribute will always have plenty of time to find all kind of faults in others. If we just sit and make fun of Amir instead of getting the message, how will India or the world change to a better place ?

Anonymous's picture

@People who are just talking about how much he is charging for this show, but did you think how much effort he putting for this show???? Criticising is easy. Think before you criticise someone. Every actor/actress put so much effort to a movie or show. Keep your criticism to those politicians who have got India to such a bad stage.

those saying its a copy of oprah n how aamir khan is making loadsa money - didnt oprah make huge amunts of money too?:! so wat if hes making money out of it? hes human at the end of the day, bet ur not promoting the issues he is free are you?? its almmost like saying if u wanna b a social wrker/charity worker etc wats the point ur showing urself to b great but really ur doing it for the money plz! he has a certain lifestyle so what if he keeps it up, at ;east hes doing it while also ensuring he is making a difference....ur telling me 3 idiots/taare zameen par hvnt made an imppact n changed a single persons thinking? i dont believ that for a second!! aamir khan shud b lauded for trying to change attitudes n thinking n highlighting the plight of the indian ppl....it doesnt really matter that its aamir khan, if it was anyone else i wudv said the same thing, look at the deed itself

What he should do is contact the hudnreds of thousands of men and their poor families whose lives were wrecked by modern women filing fake 498a dowry cases. Most of these cases were dismissed, but yet the men, their entire families and distant family too were arrested and sent to jail and lost everything.

Anonymous's picture

@Sun..

For those who are repeatedly commenting that he is charging 3 Cr..

Use your common sense..

1. This show is from amir khan production company.. So any profit or loss is his own,..

2. He is not making money from the SMS so definitely he is not targeting high in revenue.

3. No exclusive rights are sold to star(coming in DD as well at same time) . So again he is not trying to make money here either.. But trying to reach the villages where actually his show needs to make impact..

So please stop telling him Greedy and money making person.. Any given day he is better than you by at least trying something for better rather than just blabbering...

Become mature enough to appreciate others

Looks like a few fans of srk are jealous that this show is not as "entertaining" as Zor Ka Jhatka. Booooo.

Heart-touching show. Congratulations Aamir. Anybody would have paid him 3cr for any crap show but he chose to do this show. I loved the song at the end.

And bollywood wannabe, please snap out of your wannabe attitude

I really do not understand why people are making a Big fuss about the 3 crores Aamir is Charging...
Aamir Khan could have easily earned 3 crores by hosting any typical "run of the mill"Game show like "Dus Ka Dum", "Jhor ka Jhatka" "KBC" but he thought of choosing issues which are faced by the society...

If one has seen the first episode Amir clearly states he is nobody to change the society and just wanted to create awarenss about issues which are haunting the society....Even Oprah Whinfrey who comes from an humble back ground lives a lavish life style and I believe every artist has the right to earn money ..

Atleast Amir has earned the money legally for a noble cause...Its his production...He is not charging people to watch the show that is the reason the show is broadcasted on DD as well...

This effort is far better than the efforts of our Elected representatives whom we Vote every five years to raise such important issues in the Parliament, Instead they take crores in the form of bribes to suppress such important issues....

People who are critisicing this show are critics to the core...If Aamir would have hosted a typical game show, Trust me nobody would have bothered about what he charges as he would have been charging for entertainment (Sadly this is the meaning of entertainment in india..No one believes in "Dil pe lagegi to baat banegi".... except Amir Khan)...But the same critics would have criticised him stating Amir lacks creativity and is wasting the time of the aam junta...

Sometimes we need to grow up and look at the Bigger Issues in life...When Amir made Taare Zameen Pe we were not bothered how much money he made...I paid 200 bucks to watch the movie and I believe millions who bought the tickets never regretted even though the movie made us Cry..no one questioned the commercial aspect...Even the Government gave him a National Award....

To sum up:: Ofcourse there would always be people in our life, who may even doubt an armyman who dies facing the enemy, by saying "He did this because he had an ulterior motive of earning a gallantry medal" or "He wanted the compensation to be earned by his family"

I would have loved to see Srk host such an amazing show. Not a fan of Aamir's social service. I am really sad to see that Srk is mired in career damaging/destroying negative rumors and media controversies at work, while his competition is taking full advantage of his bad phase to reinvent their own dry-cleaned public images. Tabloids are filled with only biased negative feedback and hate propoganada against Srk. He needs to bounce back from them, defeat the bad press and regain his position.

Clearly people cant handle the truth, the stories he brings in his show are reality. People are so selfish and evil they would much rather watch katrina kaif dancing half naked than watch a show which depicts the reality going on in india.

I salute aamir khan for making such ideas and the tv episodes a reality. So needed. The concept itself speaks about his thinking, ideals, and his deep desire to make a difference. Kudos Aamir.
