As far as style queen goes, I'd have to say some of her looks are a hit and others are a miss. She does not always pull off great style. Although she is one of the better dressed women in Bollywood, esp for her genre, but I would not call her a style queen.

I agree, back then she was a kid merely.. her acting and star power-aura were not tops. Today, she is far more confident and lived life deeper.. I'm sure her acting would have depth now.. but Bollywood does not want non-newbies apparently:
This is Bollywood.. where they woo near-kids like puppets to dance and say some stuff in silly masala films. If they find reason, then they try to train them to be "actors". She never got in the latter category. Frankly, I cannot stand to watch 98% of new Bollywood actors/actresses for a few minutes. You have to be a star-kid with things on a platter and/or get favors of the right people to get to this level where they groom you to be a "true actor" and give you the right big film parts.
A sad true fact of Bollywood.. and something which Sonali indicated during her career back then: she could never play Bollywood games to be at the top.

Sonali Bendre and Amrita Rao are 2 women who are pretty, but very bland. Can't watch them for more than 5 mins in a movie.
I figured "looks good for her age" would start..
Back then, she looked like a simple deer.. no depth in her eyes. Today's she's confident, secure.. more gorgeous. She looks like she's ready to act and display her talents now.. not then. She appears more fit and trim than 95% of the starlets coming into Bollywood today. Her height and figure are awesome, she can put a Western model to the test. She has the intelligence shining on her face. She should be like the Julia Roberts of Mumbai.. ready to make her prime-time.. but Mumbai and India like only the dumb-deer "fresh" look.

By stating "true" icon, I'm trying to state that she, in reality, never became an icon.. but should have been one. I think the rest of my post clearly displays this fact.. that she never became famous.
I conducted an informal poll here of Bollywood looks. When I showed the TimesofIndia Most beautiful in the world actresses, most of my American friends here.. think she's got the perfect gorgeous Indian look. That's an icon.. something truly original of a region, yet common... and dazzles the world. No doubt, she did not become famous to dazzle the world. But by "true" icon.. it's like stating "true" king or queen.. who is in exile... who is unknown..
Years back, there were extreme beauties 'fighting' for the icon title. Just like today. Some won.. some disappeared. They were all beautiful, each in their own way. Just like today..
she is a beautiful woman...i find her more gorgeous than even the plastic beauty aishwarya rai...n her dressing is so classy on the similar lines of sushmita n preity!

Sonali Bendre is a true icon of India.. someone who can dazzle anyone on the earth. I asked many of my American friends here.. and they rated her as very beautiful among the Bollywood actresses. Many who have seen her in real life feel she is the most beautiful woman in the world. No lie. Her face has a symmetry that is all-Indian yet is pure magic. Her face can launch a thousand ships.. and her figure is Hollywood fit-trim pageant level-perfect. She never got her due respect, in terms of her beauty.
How she disappeared in Bollywood with her immense beauty is beyond anyone. She should have polished her acting, got a strong agent made her way to the top. Hope she makes a comeback.
