Vidya Balan is among the five Indians who is shortlisted for Time magazine's world's 100 most influential people for 2012.The magazine has shortlisted 200 most influential people in the world, out of which 100 names would be pulled out for the magazine's next edition.

The list has 5 Indians in it - Vidya Balan, Anna Hazare, Nitish Kumar, Narendra Modi and Sachin Tendulkar

Here is the excerpt about Vidya in Time.

"Do Bollywood heroines have sex? Thanks to Balan, the answer is finally yes, yes, yes! Balan started her career with romantic fluff, playing coy, chaste leading ladies, but has found critical acclaim (and box-office success) playing real women with real desires, from a 1970s soft-porn star to the sister of a murder victim who fights for justice. She's more popular than ever, a Bollywood icon for the knowing woman of the new India."says magazine about Vidya.
Not surprisingly she's the only bollywood personality and Indian woman in the list.Other Indians who are shortlisted are Anna Hazare, Nitish Kumar, Narendra Modi and Sachin Tendulkar.

this is so ridiculous....how is this influential?

Anonymous's picture

In which way is she influential????????

Anonymous's picture

I hope she gets it

vb has a niche market unlike other bimbos wearing western brands and pretending as if they are the coolest. Vb's fan following is much from the educated class. Educated class does not mean just degrees or people posing in their designer clothes. In a way acting is a medium to express yourself and causes and vidya did a fabulous job as jessica lal's sister and also as an item girl.May be as a society we need to understand the whole process going on to create people like silk and the whole sex trade. Society has double standards, we never blame the men supporting such things. The ending is Silk had a tragic death and its a lesson for people not to fall into such traps.

She's certainly influential, in the sense that she is changing the way female actors are perceived and the degree of power they can yield. Yes, she is an actress, but the visibility of her profession gives hope to other women who are inspired (and many will attest to this) to break the glass ceiling and do so on the basis of their talent and hard work, not by conforming to arbitrary norms. To the person who called her talent "pedestrian", that's your opinion. Millions of people in India (and outside it), myself included, think she is incredibly talented. Also, don't use the Oscars as your barometer of excellence. Plenty of pedestrian movies and performances get nominated and win at the Oscars, and plenty of great films and actors get shut out. The Oscars should mean nothing to us.

Sachin? Where's my prince Rahul Gandhi?

very well deserved. She is perfect for the 'new india' we live in today - strong, independent and definitely not shy or ashamed of projecting what real women are like. She personifies the everyday indian woman: strong, independent and with her own ambitions, but also has a graceful and traditional way about her - and i love her for it

well done Vidya!

Sorry folks but she is just an actress. She gets paid to entertain people and no matter how wonderful her job, it is ultimately about making money and achieving artistic satisfaction. So hands Anna Hazare should win! He is the voice of millions of Indians ranging from a 10 year old to a 80 year old. Vidya's achievement does not even come close.

The most deserving Indian, the most deserving actor in the world!!!

Anonymous's picture

Truly deserving!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GIVE IT TO HER. SHE'S 100 TIMES MORE DESERVING THAN AISHWARYA! if ash can make it to time just cos she's good looking (cos we all know that acting isn't her forté - even though she works hard, she can never give a performance without a false note in it), then vidya definitely should.
of course the other nominees are just as deserving...

What an over-reaction!!!! Such recognition for such mediocre talent. Just goes to show how shallow India is as a country!
If Acting was an Olympic Sport, Vidya wouldn't even feature and India like in other Sports would come last!!!! If TDP or Kahaani were sent to the Oscars they wouldn't make it past the nominations, that's how ridiculous this is.
The lack of true talent does not mean you felicitate "pedestrian" talent!

Wow..really hope she makes it along with Sachin! Btw saw the it's my life episode with vidya and fell in love with her even more...she's the modern Indian woman who faced so many obstacles in the path to her dream but still made it...no Bollywood backing or couch or beauty paegant required! Truly an inspiration for following your dreams!!!
