Vidya Balan is among the five Indians who is shortlisted for Time magazine's world's 100 most influential people for 2012.The magazine has shortlisted 200 most influential people in the world, out of which 100 names would be pulled out for the magazine's next edition. The list has 5 Indians in it - Vidya Balan, Anna Hazare, Nitish Kumar, Narendra Modi and Sachin Tendulkar Here is the excerpt about Vidya in Time. "Do Bollywood heroines have sex? Thanks to Balan, the answer is finally yes, yes, yes! Yes I do call her "mediocre and pedestrian". No amount of shouting and eye-popping indignity is going to make me change my mind!If the award in the entertainment section should go to anybody it should be to Sujoy Ghosh. Without the script VB wouldn't have got the plaudits but many could have done the role!In a country of Billions to make 75 crore is miniscule. The sort of people who went to see Kahaani don't need to be influenced, they are the liberated kind anyway.The more the media push VB in my face the more I find her "pedestrian". I have never before come across such a "concerted effort" to make someone a "star". It makes me feel sick to know they have such "low expectations". Like I said, the lack of talent should not mean you felicitate "mediore" talent!!!

Well that's your opinion really and I respect that. But just the fact that such a talented actress is called pedestrian is puzzling. This is not the first time TIMES is selecting an actress for being bold, just go and look it up in the internet-Ellen Page who made "Juno" was in the list for influencing teens to get pregnant!!!! Atleast its not to that extent with Vidya. If shedding skin & over-publicity would be the basis for being selected, then Rakhi Sawant & Mallika Sherawat would've been there long ago. And to the people saying Aamir & SRK should be there, go look it up they've already been on the list years ago.But again it's my opinion & I think she deserves it while u don't so it' ok and I respect your opinion. NOW PEACCCCCEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

she is MORE than an actress...she is like srk: self-made woman ....she didnt even have the good looks or small figure and was shunned by ppl before she even started acting...she didnt have a filmi background or help like katrina, kareena or a pageant like priyanka and aishwarya...she can carry a film by herself...dirty picture and kahaani ...esp kahaani cuz it didnt have sex or anything...when was the last time women could do that in the movie industry? this is groundbreaking...actresses just smile and laugh and run around trees with the actor taking the lead....i bet these posters questioning her are men who cant handle the fact that a female actress has come this far or women who are jealous of her success. vidya is a passionate woman who never gave up and she truly deserves this!!! a true underdog story =)

You took the words out of my mouth. Vidya is even more praiseworthy than self-made men like SRK and Amitabh Bachchan simply because she's a woman, and in a nepotistic and sexist Bollywood her efforts must have been double. And really, the fact that she didn't work with the Khans made her career even more thriving. It was a blessing, really. In fact, I found that I prefer more the filmographies of actresses who worked little or at all with the 3 Khans than of those who have many collabs with them. I hope things will start to change for the better for female actresses in Bollywood! Way to go, Vidya!

Art is reflection of society. With the dirty pictures and Kahani, Vidya has shown other actress that they don't need to be showpieces in a movie starring a big hero. They should headline their own movies and not hesitate to take on meaty roles. Vidya is not the first women in bollywood to do meaty, women oriented roles but you have to admit that recently a lot the roles the actresses were getting were show piece roles. Her success has told them to wake up and take back control role. Demand better scripts and more substantial roles. Let's be honest, kareena did Ra. One and Bodyguard to have big hits to her credit but Shakrukh and Salman walked away with the credit and money and Kareena had nothing to do. Vidya carried both of her films on her shoulders with her talent and made them hits. And the best thing about her is how she carries herself. She's a modern Indian woman. She's not a size 0 or even a size 4. She's comfortable wearing saris but she does hide her sensuality. She looks happy and confident without looking a like supermodel. She's intelligent, she has opinions and she's got a great sense of humor. Even after all the setbacks she faced early in her career, it hasn't stopped her from achieveing her goals. The question is why would anybody be offended if she is seen as influential?

being bold, shedding clothes, being a gr8 actress doesnt qualify one automatically for being an influential person.......but then of course maybe she has 'infleunced' a lot of men with her look in dirty picture.....???.....what really makes her deserving for this award?....what great work has she accomplished with her acting fame which other actresses havent?......
U really seem to know how to make a list...hahaha....sorry but according to you even sachin is not an influential person nor does a certain mangeshkar deserve bharatratna because lets face it ,what have they contributed for the welfare of society by playing cricket and singing respectively? Your logic is absurd because they all deserve what they have achieved .Every aspiring singer,aspiring cricketer and now aspiring actress wishes to be like lata,sachin and vidya respectively.If thats not influencing i don't know what it is?Just because it is arts doesnt mean they have no influence on public.Think before u make a comment.
I don't know how much she deserves to be on this list; I mean, comparing her to the likes of Sachin, Modi, and Hazare...really? These men are WAY more deserving than her.
But I do think she is changing things in the film industry, and there is no denying she's an AMAZING actor. Even before Dirty Picture, her performances were superb and varied - Parineeta, Bhool Bhulaiya (the end scene anyone?), Paa, NOKJ, etc. She's an actor who can act (which shouldn't be surprising, but it really is when you see the lot in the industry today); she is entertaining; she can do art films + commercial; she didn't rely on any of the Khans or Kapoors; she's pretty self-made. The only downfall she experienced was her choice of clothes earlier. But come on, is that really an issue? Especially when you have talent? True, she exposed herself in the DP, but putting that aside, did you see her acting? It was phenomenal!
And call me biased, but I love seeing women on the influential list :)

she changed the rules of Bollywood.Before u had to be sallu gf getting a break or a beauty queen or join johar gang or be in the news for being fashionable.SHE s d game changer!!!!

Sorry. She does not deserve. One TDP & one Kahani aren't enough to be in world's most influential poll. Actors like SRK, Aamir had to slog for 20 years & give hits plus quality films to get into such polls while Vidya gets nominated for just 2 clean hits?!
Rather than her, it is Ekta Kapoor who should have been nominated for revolutionising TV industry, making stars & now dominating films despite being a female producer. She single handedly made Balaji what it is today.
Time seems to want cheap publicity & cater to low brow commoners by including a mere flavour of the season like Vidya Balan in their poll.
This proves her popularity is increasing and she 100% deserves this.
As a powerful personality she deserves it over kat, bebo and aish. But she cant be influential as she is not that much popular than bebo, kat and aish.
