If I were to stop an average person on the street in most countries outside India and ask whether he or she has heard of Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan, the answer is likely to be no.

Indians, fueled by their shrill media, will no doubt take umbrage at this, but that’s a hard fact of life.

Our stars are not as important abroad as we think, barring a few pockets where Indian cinema is popular.

India’s most popular acting export today is 26-year-old Freida Pinto, like it or not.

WHAT HOLLYWOOD CRITICS SAY:

The quintessentially Mumbai working class girl had a relatively quiet start to her career, modeling for a couple of years and hosting the English language international travel show "Full Circle" on Zee International.

Then, destiny had its say when Danny Boyle cast her as Latika in "Slumdog Millionaire."

The film was reviled in India, feted abroad, won a clutch of Oscars and grossed the small matter of US$378 million.

It is arguably Pinto who has best capitalized on the film’s success.

She quietly found herself a Hollywood agent, schooled herself in the ways of the West and went on to sign a slew of films with an impressive array of directing talent including the legendary Woody Allen ("You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger"); the acclaimed Julian Schnabel ("Miral"); and the veteran Jean-Jacques Annaud ("Black Gold").

Possibly her most challenging role was for "Miral," in which she played the central character.

“Miral herself is played very engagingly by Freida Pinto as a mischievous and idealistic teenager with an acute sense of natural justice,” wrote Critic Geoffrey McNab in The Independent.

However, most critics can’t get past Pinto’s beauty.

Reviewing "Miral" for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Deborah Young described Pinto as “distractingly attractive.”

“Freida Pinto’s Caroline the primatologist is no Dian Fossey, and indeed gives no hints that she has even heard of her, but, man, is she gorgeous,” said the venerable Roger Ebert, critiquing "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" in the Chicago Sun-Times.

WHAT INDIANS THINK:

In India, reviewers tend to be dismissive of Pinto.

Rashid Irani’s review of "Apes" in the Hindustan Times does not mention Pinto at all, nor is her name in the credits.
Nikhat Kazmi in the Times of India and Sukanya Verma in Rediff damn her with faint praise.

“Freida Pinto stays mostly in the background but does have a piquant charm of her own,” offers Kazmi, while Verma describes the actress as “no more than a pretty distraction.”

The average Indian’s mentality seems to concur with that of the reviewers.

Your average, opinionated Atul, steeped in the delights of Bollywood, tends to think poorly of her acting skills, as my conversations with punters indicate.

This opinion seems to exist in the Indian film industry as well.

“India will never accept Freida Pinto unless she proves herself in Bollywood,” a filmmaker acquaintance told me recently.

In an industry known for broad interpretations of roles and shameless mugging in the name of acting, that’s rich indeed.

CRAB MENTALITY:

The truth is that the general audience outside India thinks of Pinto as an exotic and beautiful import and as a pleasant addition to their screens.

Abroad, critics are generally accepting of her and are certainly not as harsh on her as they have been on India’s import-that-never-was -- former Miss World and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan -- for her less-than-impressive turn in "The Pink Panther 2."

Indeed, Mike Goodridge of Screen International said that Rai Bachchan was “all at sea” in the film.

Perhaps the poor perception of Pinto in India could be due to subliminal jealousy, arising out of watching the girl-next-door make good, and the proverbial crab mentality.

When A.R. Rahman won a brace of Oscars, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for "Slumdog Millionaire," India, while quick to accept the accept the accolades, did so with a caveat that his scores for Indian films were far superior.

With Pinto there is no such acceptance, as she hasn’t won any major award, yet.

In 2009, Pinto scored a BAFTA nomination for best supporting actress for "Slumdog Millionaire."

As a voting member of the academy, I cast my vote for her, not because she is Indian like me but because I believed that she is the gentle and calm soul of an otherwise frenetic film. She didn’t win.

Detractors will get an opportunity to see Pinto "prove herself" in her upcoming film "Trishna," directed by the celebrated British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom.

The film, alas, though shot entirely in India with a largely Indian cast and crew is based on Thomas Hardy's novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles," and will not be the actress’ get out of jail free card.

That will have to be a proper Indian film.

Right now Pinto is part of another global success story as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" grosses north of US$256 million and counting, while she takes a week off to spend with her family in Mumbai.

I never disliked/hated Frieda Pinto. She achieved what she had because of her hard work and dedication, and Indians just can't seem to suck it up. Maybe they're mad that their light-eyed-fair-skin-beauty didn't make it, so why does an average-dusky-indian-girl make it?

Anonymous's picture

Frieda is a NON Entity who had a bit role in slumdog millionaire and a bit part in woody allen movies etc etc. She is not known!

Anonymous's picture

Indians don't 'hate Freida. Actaully most of them are not aware of her since she is not Bollywood.
Those who do know her like her or don't I don't really like her because she strikes me as a phoney and a hypocrite. She is actaully not a big star in Hollywood like these indian interviwer make her out to be . She is not even a household name here in the US. Very few americans know of her too.
I have seen many interview of freida on both indian and american and she seems to have two diffrent personalities. With americans , she is nice and play the down to eart card. With indians , she is rude and conciteted and bahves like she is Angeline Jolie. This little loser can't accomplish what Jolie has done.
Hollywood best and well known indian actors are like Kunal Nayyar from BBT and Kal Penn and Mindy Kaling and Archie Panbji. Freida and Dev Patel both suck and have no fan base in reality.

Anonymous's picture

They hate her because she has not done any ITEM GIRL songs yet in bollywood! LOL

Anonymous's picture

hollywood critics are polite to freida...its obvious shes not bad but shes not all that good either...but im sure in a few years with some acting coaches and the right directors she will end up with the awards that will give her credibility...the best performances of slumdog millionaire were the smallest kids and the supporting character actors..thats it

Anonymous's picture

This is a generalization. Most Indians just don't care about her, but there are plenty (like me) who do like her. Then there are some who despise her out of jealousy---they, their types and their favorite actors can't get attention in the west (which Indians crave as western worship is rampant all over Asia) so they take their frustration out on her.

Like crabs in a bucket - we will never let our own progress to get to any pinnacle of success without trying to tear them down.

Im indian and I love Freida Pinto and proud of her, she worked really hard and she deserves all the sucess. For those of you guys who are hating is because you guys are jealous.

Anonymous's picture

Im indian and I am proud of Freida Pinto's sucess. She is making India proud instead of bashing her people should be supporting her. Eventhough I am not born in India, I think people in India are very talented in many aspects but the problem is Indians need to be supporting each other and not hating it doesn't matter what religion you are. If you want India to develop indians need to work together and skin colour should not be an issue it's the personality of the person that matters.

Anonymous's picture

OMG WHY do you guys hate Indians SO much? This is exactly how die-hard racists talk about their anti-group anywhere in the world. When I see some White group hating on blacks or vice versa, this is how they act. Like PIGS!
If Indians are so bad what the hell are you doing in INdia or around Indians? Go and hang out with the progressive smart groups and talk about something positive. Who the hell are all of you to paint 1 billion people with one paint stroke anyway? If you are all from some anti-Hindu christian groups or some communist a-holes, stop this retarded proppaganda. You will never win. INdia is way too friggin big for you to do what you do in other gullible countries!

for those who make the anti hindu comments, please look up the Riteish genelia wedding right here in Pinkvilla. Biggest and most reported Bollywood wedding, with the son of the Chief Minister of Mumbai and genelia d souza, who everyone loves. Freida does not have either the va voom looks or the cute looks of Gen. Hers is a model beauty, not a Bollywood beauty, simples.

Anonymous's picture

Haha makes sense... It's because she has Portuguese ancestry... The hindoos really hate Christians in India ! There's an entire community of Latin Christians there...

Anonymous's picture

It's because she isn't a hindu :) poor hindu fucks :P

Anonymous's picture

Because she kissed that guy in rise of the planets of the apes...

Anonymous's picture

Probably the same reason why indians hate talking about porn but love to see them.
Double standard people and hypocrites.

Anonymous's picture

Get this straight.
Indians hate each other. They are double standard people who talk big and accomplish stones.
I am indian guy and have lots of jealous indian haters because I am better looking than them according to their indian girlfriends.
Indians are jealous and pathetic people.
Bollywood never gave chance to freida because she did not meet their standards of beauty, was not from an influential family, just another desperate indian model who wants to act in bollywood.
Now they are angry because she only acts in hollywood movies and not attempting bollywood after her fame.
The truth is she got lucky like we all know because she was directed by a good director whose movie got recognition.I know she is barely an average actress but at least am happy she made it in hollywood and is happy.

Indians are never happy for each other. All they care about is mine, myself,me.

I hate bollywood and indians.....believe me I have witnessed things that will make any indian ashamed

-On my trip to india, I have seen a person injured and bleeding and many people surrounding him and not doing anything.I was in an autorickshaw and my heart sank. I could not help because I had no money and did not know if I would be put in jail if the person died on the way.But at least the older adults could have done something
-indians praising india without doing anything to help anybody
-whenever someone is above them, they are jealous and asks tons of questions like "how come you have that and I dont?"
-They love to litter their roads, pavement

They are nothing but double standard people.
I dont ever want to be indian again.

Thousands of years of inbred racism and class brain washing. Pure and simple.

Anonymous's picture

It's because she's not unbelivably white. I love her, I think she's beautiful and I'm Indian and don't have fair skin, thats what makes me love her. She gives me confindence. But I guess in India she may be considered "plain". Oh well, a true beauty is beauty that evokes emotions, and she evokes a lot of mens "emotions" lol. :)

Anonymous's picture

Hate is a very strong word. We do not hate her. The right world would be that she is not popular in Indian public because she hasn't done bollywood movies. The rikshawala's , chaprasi, farmers, and about 60-70% of the Indian population which is rural, doesn't watch hollywood movies. Even most of the people in higher class and well of rich families don't watch hollywood. They love their emotional bollywood movies. Hollywood is only popular is a particular segment of youngsters, not everybody. So , she is just not popular, nobody detests or hates her

Anonymous's picture

Because they want a white face to represent India. And freida is not fake like fakesh*warya u know who and all others.I think either freida or deepika are good to represent pretty indian worldwide.I prefer freida becasue she acts better than deepika.

Anonymous's picture

Indians hate her? now, now that is a broad accusation! Maybe they don't see her fitting the role of the typical Indian actress and the attraction for her is zero...but to use this kind of hate lingo is what most people HATE, FOR REAL!!!

Anonymous's picture

The comments here just goes to prove the writer's point. LOL

Anonymous's picture

She is pretty no doubt! But BEAUTIFUL like Aishwarya, DEEPIKA or Rani... NO! For the west she is exotic and yes at some point INDIANS GIRLS r exotics! But I guess Indians likes to see STRIKING features like the women I mentioned above, a different face... But I love her skin color, some of u shouldn't bash her for this when U GIRLS HAS THE SAME COLOR SKIN!

Anonymous's picture

Nonentity - no one cares to know who she is in India. She's only had minor 5 min roles as per Kat

Anonymous's picture

I wonder why India goes gaga over blue eyed beauty, fair girls who really don't know much acting but still shine in Bollywood(ex Katrina, Kareena, Aishwarya....(Aishwarya's acting was horrible in Pink Panther2, Kareena when started did not have clue about being natural on screen))... Its just like we never appreciate what we have but we always tend to be impressed from west....We should support Freida and feel proud...and try to criticize in a healthy way not just dislike her blindly. I really wonder why dusky skin never proves to be number 1 in Bollywood(commercially), I think definition of beauty is just more than white skin...

filmychica's picture

Indians don't hate Freida, they just don't like her. LOL. some don't even know her. that's all.

About hating on her cause she's brown is a stupid assumption, when majority is of her shade and tone in India. There are several other actors/actresses as dark if not darker than her who are loved and gushed over (i.e. priyanka / bipasha / shabana, etc). Come'on. Yes, she doesn't appear ''EXOTIC'' to us cause her features appear very COMMON to us, majority of the masses have her look, no offense. She is an OKAY actor, truth be told. Good she's making her name abroad but chill.

Yes, desi ppl can get 'crabby' but hey, if you're representing India outside, represent it WELL or don't at all. She's okay but ya, nothing to write home about. She got lucky!!!! Just like Katrina got lucky in India. Simple. She's 'it' for now, tomorrow there'll be another, that's the way show-biz works.

Nairobi's picture

I don't think Indians hate her...they're just indifferent. I like her :)

Anonymous's picture

though beauty is only relative, Frieda has arguably a prettier face than the Minka Kelly's and Eva Longoria. won't see anger from their own kind that they are stars.. but so so much anger that oh.. Freida gets to be a 'star' . oh !

Anonymous's picture

Why should she do Bollywood films? She's an actress at the end of the day and she can chose whatever medium she wants! If precious ego's are getting hurt in Bollywood then that's not Freida's problem!

All these Bollywood actresses who claim they don't wish to be in Hollywood are lying. The fact is every actor, no matter where they are from would kill to be recognised in Hollywood...that's where the jealousy comes from...because Freida is making her mark in Hollywood.

As for beauty and skin colour, she is natural, and has the girl next door look...which makes her appealing. She doesnt need to wear fake contact lenses, wear mini skirts and dance around on a beach in Miami for an item number...she is far beyond that and will get better and better with time. We all should be proud and happy for her, as there is now a small gap in which other Indian actors and actresses can push through and be recognised in the west.
