Why do Indians hate Freida Pinto?
Credits:CNNGO If I were to stop an average person on the street in most countries outside India and ask whether he or she has heard of Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan, the answer is likely to be no. Indians, fueled by their shrill media, will no doubt take umbrage at this, but that’s a hard fact of life. Our stars are not as important abroad as we think, barring a few pockets where Indian cinema is popular. India’s most popular acting export today is 26-year-old Freida Pinto, like it or not. WHAT HOLLYWOOD CRITICS SAY: The quintessentially Mumbai working class girl had a relatively quiet start to her career, modeling for a couple of years and hosting the English language international travel show "Full Circle" on Zee International. Then, destiny had its say when Danny Boyle cast her as Latika in "Slumdog Millionaire." The film was reviled in India, feted abroad, won a clutch of Oscars and grossed the small matter of US$378 million. It is arguably Pinto who has best capitalized on the film’s success. She quietly found herself a Hollywood agent, schooled herself in the ways of the West and went on to sign a slew of films with an impressive array of directing talent including the legendary Woody Allen ("You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger"); the acclaimed Julian Schnabel ("Miral"); and the veteran Jean-Jacques Annaud ("Black Gold"). Possibly her most challenging role was for "Miral," in which she played the central character. “Miral herself is played very engagingly by Freida Pinto as a mischievous and idealistic teenager with an acute sense of natural justice,” wrote Critic Geoffrey McNab in The Independent. However, most critics can’t get past Pinto’s beauty. Reviewing "Miral" for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Deborah Young described Pinto as “distractingly attractive.” “Freida Pinto’s Caroline the primatologist is no Dian Fossey, and indeed gives no hints that she has even heard of her, but, man, is she gorgeous,” said the venerable Roger Ebert, critiquing "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" in the Chicago Sun-Times. WHAT INDIANS THINK: In India, reviewers tend to be dismissive of Pinto. Rashid Irani’s review of "Apes" in the Hindustan Times does not mention Pinto at all, nor is her name in the credits. “Freida Pinto stays mostly in the background but does have a piquant charm of her own,” offers Kazmi, while Verma describes the actress as “no more than a pretty distraction.” The average Indian’s mentality seems to concur with that of the reviewers. Your average, opinionated Atul, steeped in the delights of Bollywood, tends to think poorly of her acting skills, as my conversations with punters indicate. This opinion seems to exist in the Indian film industry as well. “India will never accept Freida Pinto unless she proves herself in Bollywood,” a filmmaker acquaintance told me recently. In an industry known for broad interpretations of roles and shameless mugging in the name of acting, that’s rich indeed. CRAB MENTALITY: The truth is that the general audience outside India thinks of Pinto as an exotic and beautiful import and as a pleasant addition to their screens. Abroad, critics are generally accepting of her and are certainly not as harsh on her as they have been on India’s import-that-never-was -- former Miss World and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan -- for her less-than-impressive turn in "The Pink Panther 2." Indeed, Mike Goodridge of Screen International said that Rai Bachchan was “all at sea” in the film. Perhaps the poor perception of Pinto in India could be due to subliminal jealousy, arising out of watching the girl-next-door make good, and the proverbial crab mentality. When A.R. Rahman won a brace of Oscars, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for "Slumdog Millionaire," India, while quick to accept the accept the accolades, did so with a caveat that his scores for Indian films were far superior. With Pinto there is no such acceptance, as she hasn’t won any major award, yet. In 2009, Pinto scored a BAFTA nomination for best supporting actress for "Slumdog Millionaire." As a voting member of the academy, I cast my vote for her, not because she is Indian like me but because I believed that she is the gentle and calm soul of an otherwise frenetic film. She didn’t win. Detractors will get an opportunity to see Pinto "prove herself" in her upcoming film "Trishna," directed by the celebrated British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom. The film, alas, though shot entirely in India with a largely Indian cast and crew is based on Thomas Hardy's novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles," and will not be the actress’ get out of jail free card. That will have to be a proper Indian film. Right now Pinto is part of another global success story as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" grosses north of US$256 million and counting, while she takes a week off to spend with her family in Mumbai.

Anyone who criticize Freida should take a first look at the bunch of bollywood actors who have got lucky in landing big budgeted movies-not due to their acting talent but their connections or family background. Remember kareena in her earlier days with her over acting and dull expressions...but over the time she is getting better but not quite there. There are so many actors in bollywood who are worthless but yet they are still getting roles... I guess good for Freida that she doesn't have to be part of such industry. I can guarantee the moment Frieda wins prestigious awards all the bollywood losers will come to her feet with movie offers and tell her how proud they are of her....bastards
Seriously I often see this where good actors starring in low bidget movies don't get their dues but the most bakwash actors are getting all the accolades n money for nothing..EG Imran Khan...
she had two minute role in planet of apes so why should reviewer talk about her in length.
i agrwee....and same goes for katrina
The girl is a dusky beauty and has class. Can't say the same for many Bollywood babes.
Indians are proud of Freida Pinto. In her they see a bright future for their dark skinned pretty daughters who don't qualify for Bollywood nor beauty pageants. Bollywood actresses hate Freida with a vengeance bcuz she made it to Hollywood on her own while they had to hop several casting couches to bag movies in Bollywood same goes for the men they hate for being a threat to their couches how will they have affairs if young girls didn't use them for roles fame and success?
lots of reasons why indians hate her:
looks: does not have the fair and light eyed gori look...has a natural charm without all that foundation , false lids and makeup...
attitude : does not flaunt herself or paint herself into a gori and show a false attitude and strut around for endorsements and public appearances
racial : not a north indian but a south indian..indians still have that difference
no hype : noone to hype her in India..neither family or producers or directors..you need to be projected and thrusted upwards in any career to be seen and recognised even if you have zero acting skills
basically an actress who doesnt follow the current bollywood norm of social behaviour is considered by the industry itself as not good for their fraternity....
as for where she has gone wrong :
i think in her way she has let down Indians in her speech and direct comments about India and Indians.
fake accent
dumping her boyfriend which ofcourse a a one day hall of fame glory for her dumped boyfriend
who said Indians hate her? dont just write general statements based on Aishwarya Rai fans!
It's true that she is kind of sterotypical about indians, but they rejected her, bollyeood rejected her why? because she is dusky, even pc and deeps and others are dusky but they have beautiful features and great bodies that make up for it, i'm sure if someone like pc or deeps was in her place, they would have been more hyped about over in the west, but its Freida, just like the majority of people like kat cause shes foreign people like Frieda cause shes foreign to them, i truly thinks she desrves: the success because she struggled alot and beautiful titles becuase most Indians looked down at her cause of her skin colour and bang now people phrase her beauty...which shuts them up for being shallow towards this pretty and hardworking girl
Because she's dark skinned, tall and doesn't strip at the drop of a hat. She doesn't have a huge chest and hasn't opted for a boob job, and neither does she have all the curves the typical Indian man lusts for. She carries herself properly at every event and every interview. And of course, she's not fake. She's one of the more genuine personalities I've seen from any industry.
All reasons mentioned above all lead back to the sick and twisted mentalities of desis, in and outside of India, which very much exists on this website and I'm sure the majority of people on here are NRIs. All those people that are only ever obsessed with fairness and looks, but most of all fairness, which is so so petty. Talent and a genuine soul can go for a toss.
Sort your way of thinking out and this girl could be the Aishwarya Rai of India and someone we Indians can be proud of, for once.
And please PV publish my post, I'm getting sick and tired with the low thinking on this website and it's about time people knew who they were.
I hate her. Ask me why....because i just do!!! deal with it
No looks, No acting skills & she jumps into fame just like that without any effort, she was a nobody in Slumdog
Nobody hates her. She is not a good actress; she just happens to be in movies that do well and the credit is not for her acting. People side her not because she is very pretty ( her features are plain) and she cannot act but because she is normal looking or more relatable looking ( by normal I mean brown-skinned) like most Indians. So, for all those who can't stand Aishwarya because she is so fair-skinned and God knows she can certainly act better than Freida, they push Freida down everyone's throat. Her looks validate all those who are not light-skinned even though deep down everyone knows that Aishwarya is far more beautiful and talented. Even if Aishwarya was darker, she would still be way prettier than Freida. Freida is just the "it" girl of the moment because she has a good agent/PR team. Anyone can be a fashionista if someone else is paying for your premier designer clothing and all you have to do is wear it.
She doesn't need Indians b/c she is so popular outside India.......All of the popular international magazines like to publish Freida Pinto on their covers or inside pages not Aishwraya Rai b/c its obvious that they want to c Freida and also she is popular among them........If there is a Loreal ad in the magazine pages u will c Freida not Aishwarya and as far as the Indians acceptance is concerned Indians have accepted talentless Aishwarya without any acting talent just b/c of her over hyped beauty and Katrina Kaif ....they shoudn't have any problems accepting Freida Pinto......

shumuck she is right calling indian people racist and you are one among them..Its not like all indians are racist but she was talking about people like you..and its funny that you said 90% people dont know her..really??I mean really??? so I guess that means 90% people dont about aishwarya too..even in your comment it shows how racist you are..
I do not think Indians hate her probably many of us are not aware of her presence.May be because her role in slumdog millionaire was not visible. She wisely chose hollywood opportunities and now is doing some roles in hollywood. The small gal who has acted as small latika should have gotten hollywood exposure and limelight. She had much space in the movie. Whatever it is Freida is lucky enough to have been recognized by people with slumdog .Media too has played gr8 role in boosting up her career I shud say. She is blessed. May god bless her always. People who put hardwork with a pure soul shud be recognised.
And while coming to foreign critics, i don't know about her acting talents.I hardly got to see her acting in slumdog. She is an average looking gal. That was the reason she was chosen for Slumdog script.Distractingly beautiful, gorgeous looking gal these all terms are exaggerating. One thing is for sure no one in India hates her.Indian media will write about her when she performs something extra ordinary. I am waiting to watch trishnaa. Wish her all the best.
who says indians hate her?? i am happy she is in a decent position in holly. it's more like we think she's normal looking girl and don't think she's extradonarily beautiful. but one thing i hope is she would represent indian culture atleast at proper events, i never saw her wear a sari even once.
i hate her not because she has extremely good luck..i mean she had no role in rise of the planet of the apes..but she's still basking in the glow of its success...but because they refer to her as an exotic beauty..honestly? Half d goan chicks look like her..she is nothing compared to deepika or kareena or dia or lara or priyanka chopra before her surgeries fr that matter
I have seen the vitriol against her especially on pinkvilla.. If those comments ain't hate I don't know what is.
Reasons why Indians hate her:
1. Her role in Slumdog was too short for the kind of recognition she gets. (She very very cleverly made her mark on the red market. When people start eagerly waiting for your appearances you've climbed your first step. There are 100s of Z list starlets trying to make it into Hollywood so it isn't easy)
2. She's distanced herself from Bollywood. (She is working in a different industry *duh* and Bollywood does not mean India so if she ever wants to a Indian film and she does a Bengali one then people will still diss her for doing so. She also doesn't have a khandan or actor supporting her so Bollywood was never in sight.)
3. She doesn't have talent. (Neither do the starlets entering Bollywood. Nepotism at it's best)
4.She is very ORDINARY looking. (Well I'm glad she's entered Hollywood then.)
Indians don't hate Freida Pinto, don't be silly. I think she's pretty awesome.
It is annoying when you see Hollywood make a fuss about a regular, boring, girl next door with below averaqe talent. The feeling is mutual. Indians don't like Frieda Pinto and by what she says in her interviews-she doesn't like them either. She is very bitter because she is considered dusky, regular, not pretty or talented in India. Frieda Pinto is very lucky-very lucky indeed. Just like Katrina Kaif is lucky. She would never be famous in the US either.
Nobody hates her...get ur facts straight...
Becoz she is a bad example for Indian beauty..... she has no Indian features... ppl love her outside becoz she looks ultra ordinary indian girl
As someone else put it, this article has a very condescending tone and in its aim of hyping up Freida, it has tried to look down upon others' achievements and efforts. I won't even get to the details because it's obvious and so very wrong.
Coming to the point, do Indians hate Pinto? I don't think so. Because 90% of India has not even heard of her in the first place. She has always shunned India and Bollywood anyway. So why should India pay her any attention? Also, her attacks on Indians calling them racist and all. Not very wise words now, are they?
And it's not like she is an A-lister in Hollywood. She does blink-and-miss roles in movies there. The day she does something remarkable, India shall be proud of her.
She does not look indian. She looks totally hispanic!
I dnt think anyone hates het
Most Indians don't even ever think about her.
Perhaps the ones in Bollywood who have been trying for years to get into a major Hollywood film are seething with jealousy (Ash, Hrithik, Preity), but the general public could care less.
I don't think Indians hate her, I think they don't think of her as their own/one of them, because she started her career in a Hollywood movie as opposed to a Bollywood movie.
Jealous of someone who has achieved something without painting their face like a clown.
she would have a chance to get accepted in india, if she would have a light skin and light eyes... this is the mentality in india... everything which looks similar to the majority of indians get rejected
Indians like Freida Pinto. no question of love, because she hasnt done bollywood movies yet.
but yeah, ASH lovers hate Freida because they are jealous of her success and Ash could not acheive that kind of success in hollywood even though she tried so hard.
Freida worked in oscar winning movie, woody allen movie. whereas Ash had to be happy doing bit roles in small movies.
