Babita and Randhir Kapoor met on a flight to Hong Kong. She was a star - an actress - he was a ‘nobody’ - in his own words (he was an assistant). He was immediately in awe of her. And was hell bent on marrying her. The Kapoors are conventional when it comes to marriage and may not have been pleased to have an actress as a daughter-in-law. But the marriage came through and a few years later, things started to go downhill with rumors of Babita’s affair with popular screen villain, Ranjit. Soon they were separated. Babita and her daughters largely kept their distance from the Kapoor family until Randhir’s heart surgery in 2003, when they rallied around to support him. Babita and Randhir continue to live apart but Randhir admits, “…I keep calling her up.”

Despite the Kapoor family tradition, Babita encouraged her daughters to become film stars and to indulge in controversial western costumes. She was also very aggressive about their careers and rumors were around that they got many roles for Karishma
