sharmeen with co-director daniel jungesharmeen obaid chinoy brings glory and honor to Pakistan by winning an Oscar last night at the prestigious 84th academy awards in California. Her documentary "saving face" brings up the issue of women acid victims in Pakistan. The 33-year old from Karachi also won an Emmy for her documentary in 2010. She is also the first non-American to win the "Livingston" award. In her Oscar speech she was totally escalated and she dedicated the award to the women in Pakistan who are working for a change. Here are a few photos of her at the Oscar ceremony. Her dress was designed by renowned Pakistani designer Bunto kazmi.

She is not wearing Indian dress but Pakistani style dress that's in style there .... And it's by a Pakistani designer . Aish and Frieda didn't even wear local designers when they went to oscars.her dress is lovely
She is showcasing a segment of society not an entire country....
And I dont understand why shame on India
I wondered why she was not wearing a dupatta? atleast on her arms? good job for her but she missed something in her dress code that represents Pakistan.
Why are we talking about Pakis on a forum about bollywood?

Representing indian culture says the person whose writing comments on a predominantly bollywood focused website i.e the INDIAN film industry. lol.
Bollywood need to learn a lesson from we Pakistanis. They are making junk movies while Pakistan is making fruitful movies, eg Bol, Khuda ke liye, etc
Pakistanis are proud of Shermeen. Congrats for winning Oscar award...

when you cant do anything good for your country at least appreciate those who are doing it..have a big heart please...secondly we all loved Pakistani movie BOL and was not it based on our social issues which we dont want to talk about?? and yet it was a block buster in Pakistan because Pakistanis are aware now and they want to fix their problems...it does not mean that Pakistan is only about terrorism and acid victims..but yeah we have many ignorant's like you...it takes a great zeal and courage to showcase a issue like this..and i appreciate the courage of all those directors who bring forth such issues and it helps the victims in many ways...
THIS WAS SUPPOSE TO BE BOLLYWOOD FILMS BLOG.
well done sharmeen you make pakistani women proud..............
lol, shes not the only one....the "The Kite Runner" and "slumdog Millionare" won too
@Mon, 2012-02-27 20:12 — Anonymous
Come off it. Let's be honest. Pakistan has failed in everything. It's been a failed state for years. I am saying this as a pakistani. And on your point about sipping tequila, there are very few pakistani men that don't drink alcohol. So much for a muslim country huh? It's all crap. There is nothing muslim about Pakistan.
ban pakis on this site
Yaaaayyy!!!!! Finally! now how about you take 1 more baby step, create your own website and gloat abt ur boring paki news over there......and save us a few yawnsssssss
Yayyy..........LOvely lady with lovely dress.........We thank u ...Sharmeen Obaid for making us so proud!!!! BLess u N Pakistan !!!
@Really, that's her claim of fame? She showcased Pakistan as a woman beating, acid throwing country? Well.. I don't see any acid thrown on her face, I don't see her covering in a burqa.. As a matter of fact, her dress was representing the Indian culture more then anything else.. neither do I see her being oppressed by a man....

you dont make any sense...just because she is living a free/liberal life doesn't mean that every women in Pakistan lives her way... violence against women is a fact and I am not surprised at your narrow mindedness...if you'll watch her documentary you will realize that she has shown if Pakistan has problems than the people of Pakistan are brave enough to work for solving them...she has shown a "Pakistnai" doctor who help women...she has shown how Pakistani women struggle...dont you think it presents positivity about Pakistan.and why do you want her to represent the good side of Pakistan why not the bad side????? and why are you waiting for some gutsy to make a documentary about how beautiful Pakistan is...why dont you do some effort, stand up and make a film about Pakistan...you just want your piece of cake and eat it!! you need to watch the documentary before saying anything against it.

What for?? For congratulating Sharmeen for her Oscar & her standing up for women's rights! Thank you Pinkvilla, even though this is an Indian site, you guys have been kind to us Pakistanis & being so mature about it! This is great documentary which highlights an important issue that need to addressed! Peace
"Really, that's her claim of fame? She showcased Pakistan as a woman beating, acid throwing country? Well.. I don't see any acid thrown on her face, I don't see her covering in a burqa.. As a matter of fact, her dress was representing the Indian culture more then anything else.. neither do I see her being oppressed by a man.. So why fix something that ain't broken.. Statistic shows, women in Western countries are being slain and cheated by their spouses more than any other countries in the world.. There goes the fact.. but will she make a documentary about that? No she won't cause the golden statue won't be coming to her hands then.. heh
I will wait when some gutsy to make a documentary about how beautiful Pakistan is.. People of that country are actually caring and loving, what you see in CNN is nothing but a propaganda.. etc etc all these wanna be suckers who are doing it for the oscars don't care about no one.. they are sold to the Hollywood / Bollywood, bet she'd be sipping tequila with bunch of other celebs right now and feeling so proud that finally she fits in. Shame on her, that's how she paid back to a country who has given her the name! Tsk"
Firstly, she is not showing a representation of Pakistan as such, she is exposing an issue which many ignorant individuals seem to avoid. She did not spend her time, energy, and academia to gain fame; she did it to spread awareness and create a voice for those Pakistani women who cannot. Was she awarded for being amazing? Yes. Don't be so jealous ;) Furthermore, I agree with you on the propaganda comment, however that's another issue. Lastly, don't jump to conclusions on who she is as a person. Open your mind kid.
P. S On a fashion note, that dress does not show Indian culture, it shows Pakistani culture. :)

The documentary is actually about rehabilitation of those victims and efforts in the right direction. She didn't make a film about a problem, but made a film about a solution. Please stop being so negative, shes a film director. Would you be saying the same thing if Mukhtar Mai was standing in her place? Just because this woman herself isn't a victim and is obviously liberal you throwing a bunch of non-issue accusations at her face. She belongs to the urban Pakistan and I think her look and outfit of choice is very representative of urban Pakistani women. Her look is not indian at all, not that its a good thing or bad thing. And films/documentaries don't win academy awards or emmys for their subjects, they win for the treatment of the subjects. She directed a well-made documentary, hence won.
On a different note, acid burn victims are a reality of the our society, women have had acid thrown in their faces for the pettiest reasons such as turning down the advances of a keen suitor. Its truely tragic. Addressing that issue doesn't make her Anti Pakistan, it makes her more Pakistani.
'statistics shows, women in Western countries are being slain and cheated by their spouses more than any other countries in the world'
As a british asian woman i find that the most hillarious statement ever. how can you compare being cheated on to being physically oppressed, told how to dress, threatened with violence if you dont be obedient, etc? You are crazy.
"Really, that's her claim of fame? She showcased Pakistan as a woman beating, acid throwing country? Well.. I don't see any acid thrown on her face, I don't see her covering in a burqa.. As a matter of fact, her dress was representing the Indian culture more then anything else.."
pakistani culture is a continuum of indian culture u dumbass.
and whats wrong with pakistani pple wearing nice clothes, partying and going wild. for u to call it a woman beating and acid throwing country is a shame. domestic violence exists in every country (muslim or not) even in secular india. and just to stick it to ur face kangana ranauts sister was attacked with acid to her face not so long ago (unfortunately). u are backwards and full of hate.
Super doper Sharmeen welldone!!!! keep it up
A mighty congratulations to her. So proud of her and ecstatic over her win for Pakistan. More power to her.
