C'mon I don't believe anyone intends to be critical about the regular women like you and me on a Bollywood forum like Pinkvilla. At least I'm not here to promote a pseudo-social standard for the women across the world to match up to!

I'd rather stick to what I said, I certainly feel as an actor Miss Balan should work towards achieving a more balanced looking body. And being an ardent fan of her, I'm least apologetic about saying so. Even the best can be improved, why to shy away?

Actors should have a flexibility to gain or lose weight as per the role demands. I heard to play Silk in TDP, she put on some pounds on demand. Don't you think ideally she should be able to do that often, either way... like losing or gaining as per the role demands? An actor's body should be as versatile as her talent. It's indeed her prop as someone mentioned, after all her body is her means of expression.

And there's no need of medical intervention to seek a fitness report. She is not fat yet, agreed, but her BMI does not seem to be visually optimum either, considering her height. This is no rocket science. ...Also since when it's considered ideal to conceive movies or draw character sketches to accommodate a particular actor..? That's certainly not a healthy trend for any film industry. Shouldn't it be the other way round, all the time? Just curious. :)

Nice to hear different opinions though ...

The body is a prop of an actor which she should keep polished & in shape. It's for sake of her occupation, that should be able to carry many looks. She is beautiful but already started to look. stereotypical & older for her actual age. Not a healthy sign IMHO...

Sometimes I post comments about how certain clothes are not flattering on certain bodies. That's constructive. Vidya is not obese. And asking her to lose weight is not "constructive criticism."

Agree with Mystic Rose that this has nothing to do with health. Health is about staying active and mental health is about accepting yourself the way you are and having high self-esteem. Mental health is an important part of physical health and you cannot separate the two.

Newsflash: it has everything to do with gender. I work in counselling and I can tell you that girls and younger women I work with who suffer from poor self-esteem are much more likely to develop health problems later in life. It is a social problem, because most girls have been told to scrutinize their bodies and their looks, and are not taught instead to be healthy, which includes not just physical activity but emotional strength. Boys also face pressure and scrutiny, but far lesser scrutiny over their looks than girls do. The more life experience one gains, and especially if you spend any time gaining some knowledge about the mental health sector in North America (which is where I am, but it applies universally) you will understand that these are not isolated things. There is a pattern.

Ok, after seeing Vidya's work, I love her. She is a fantastic actress, her films are paisa vasool.

As for her figure, why give it a damn? She is the best right now. Beautiful Balan Babe.

i don't understand how it is that people want to cover up being fat as "its a woman's choice, she should be proud". "Women shouldn't be criticized" etc. etc... the bottom line is, that there is nothing flattering about it and second of all it's not a positive thing just because she dresses to suit her bod. Its unhealthy, and that's it. She is not a healthy person, and science has shown time and again the consequences have having excess fat on ur body. For her height she has far too much weight on and she's at risk for many health problems. She should set an example of being more health conscious and showing not just girls but guys too that being fit is the better choice in this day and age.

If its about being unhealthy or unfit, you can be unhealthy and unfit and still be skinny. Having a fuller figure isn't an indicator of bad health, the indicators of bad health can only be examined medically or if the person in question is obviously obese which Vidya mostly definitely isn't.
Yes shes softer and fuller compared to her contemporaries but that doesn't take away from her talent, her beauty, or her sex appeal.
If its about her not 'looking the part' for roles, its about time the system changes and the roles accommodate to the way she looks.
Vidya is a beautiful full figured woman not some poster child for bad health and obesity.

For the people who don't get it, honestly I'd try to explain.

Am I smelling feminism? First of all it has nothing to do with the gender of the person in question. It's completely uncalled-for to bring sexism here.

Secondly, when someone have chosen glamour industry or showbiz as his/her career (be it movies/theatre/dance or any kind of performing art) and showcased a lot of potential in playing the lead characters, it's only implied that they stay & look fit for their own good. Portrayal of a healthy body-image is extremely important in today's bollywood there is no excuse for unfitness, it can prove to be a hindrance even for the best of the talents.

Thirdly, there is no 'crossing-the-line' in showbiz when you put your body up on the pedestal for the display. And frankly speaking, I didn't care to spare much thought about her style or clothes or looks 'cos unlike her contemporaries, her acting skill got my full attention, where it matters.

My only concern is her slipping into an unflattering size, which might eventually narrow down the spectrum of the roles that she would be offered in the future.. and we'll miss out on what she is capable of.

And lastly, crossing the line is when out of the context one advices people to shut up constructive criticism. Investing little thought before penning down the words makes one look far better, despite their size.

VIDYA THROW AWAY ALL UR SAREES. LOSE WEIGHT AND GET A MAKE OVER.

fleur's picture

Honestly, I don't get why people feel entitled to ask another woman to lose weight. It shows a deep disrespect, and almost a self-hatred. Women are the harshest judges of other women. We are not always going to have the bodies we have now, even if you love the way you look. Just remember that there is immense pressure on women, starting from a really young age, to define their self-worth based on looks. There are many brave women (in real life, and very few in the movies) who defy this and I think they need to be appreciated for it.

I am not the biggest fan of Vidya's style, but I think she dresses in a way that suits her body and her personality. She received a lot of flak for dressing in clothes that didn't suit her before, and she switched to the "ethnic sari" thing and has helped, to an extent, popularize that style.

Feel free to critique her look, dissect her style, but don't cross the line into critiquing her body, especially when it is not just about her body. It is really about all of us. It's about women and social values.

Anonymous's picture

pls change ur style for a change.........huh

Anonymous's picture

She is looking good. Glad she has kept accessories minimal because her sari is decorative. Not a bad choice for a sari. It's not a let down like many of her other choices. And most of all, her skin is healthy and glowing, and her eyes are glittering! Lovely Vidya. Goodluck for all your upcoming works.

Anonymous's picture

She is the GQ aunty of the year! Sridevi's worn this saree before and with so much more elan.
