The last time we saw Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt was in Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), which proved to be a huge box-office success with $791 million, worldwide. It was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, whose repertoire includes former Tom Cruise movies like Valkyrie (2008), Jack Reacher (2012), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016), The Mummy (2017) and Top Gun: Maverick, which is a 2020 release. Two sequels have been added to the franchise with Cruise headlining as Ethan Hunt.

Also expected to return are Tom's MI co-stars Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. A new name has been added and confirmed to the mix by Christopher himself. Taking to his Instagram page, McQuarrie revealed that Hayley Atwell, who was last seen as MCU's (Marvel Cinematic Universe) Peggy Carter in Avengers: Endgame, will be starring alongside Tom. In the black and white IG photo shared, we get to see a gorgeous headshot of Hayley above her MI folder.

Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with Empire, McQuarrie got candid about the pressure of working on two back-to-back sequels for the Mission Impossible franchise. "I pitched the idea of making two movies, and now I have to justify why it’s two movies. You’ve got to earn that. You’ve got to make something that swallows the last three movies whole. I’m freaked out now. We’ve talked ourselves into something. Holy s**t," Christopher confessed.

Mission: Impossible 7 is slated to release on July 23, 2021, and Mission: Impossible 8 is slated to release on August 5, 2022.
