Avengers: Endgame to Captain Marvel: Diary of an MCU fangirl

It was just another day back in 2012 when I came across the trailer of The Avengers. With no prior knowledge about Marvel Comics and the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), I entered the theatre screen and hours later, a fan was born! Eventually, after a few years, I binge-watched all the movies within a week and then, a true fangirl was born! You can spot an MCU fan from a mile away - cries like a baby when the opening credits begin, waits patiently for the end-credits and for all the Indian fans, plays a game of pointing out the Indian crew members in the end-credits (You're welcome!)

Call it luck or plain destiny that I ended up being an Entertainment journalist who happened to love Hollywood just as much as she breathed Bollywood. For years, I would cover stories on the MCU hoping that one day, I would be sitting across from the cast and interviewing them. In February 2019, I got the CALL. A press junket for Captain Marvel in Singapore. A chance to not only interview Carol Danvers herself, Brie Larson, I would also be sitting face-to-face with Samuel L. Jackson. After a superb press conference, it was time for the interviews and the nerves were ticking. First up, I had to deal with the big gun - Nick Fury. As I spoke to the cameraman to adjust the lens because I am short, Samuel looked at me and stated, "No, you are not." That was all the validation I needed from the short jokes! The way he spoke about Stan post his death is still stuck in my fan-brain. When the time for Brie's interview came, she fondly spoke about her time in India and how much she loved it there. With both these actors, instantly I felt a level of comfort which was not what I had expected. I may not have got the selfie, but my dream of interviewing them came true.

Then in April came the next call, a video interview with Mr. Joe Russo, one half of the director duo of Avengers: Endgame, The Russo Brothers (with Anthony Russo). And in which country? INDIA! Without giving away spoilers, it was the passion with which Joe spoke about the MCU that got to me. Also, at the end of the interview, he stated, "Good questions." I was sold.

Life went on and the wait for Endgame began. The call was at midnight. It was happening! Avengers: Endgame baby! A press junket in Seoul, South Korea with Brie Larson, Jeremy Renner, Kevin Feige and The Russo Brothers in attendance. Oh! Did I forget to mention? ROBERT DOWNEY JR.?! So with the mind of an entertainment journalist but a heart of an MCU fangirl I entered Seoul with big dreams.

Sitting across an OG 6 Avenger was on my wishlist. And it came true. Sitting across from me was Hawkeye himself, Mr. Jeremy Renner. Internally, I had one thing in mind - see the OG 6 matching tattoo. He spoke with a smile on his face remembering the day the cast got the tattoo and how their decade-long friendship meant the world to him. The fangirl in me was internally screaming with joy because who would have thought, years later this would happen!

The highlight of the trip for me was when I was waiting for Jeremy's interview and Brie Larson passed me by. A sense of recollection swept across her face and she came my way saying, "Hi! How are you doing?" My life was made.

It only got better when I literally got to breathe the same air as Iron Man. Is there anything this man cannot do? From his epic entrance to his legendary quips, this man knows how to win hearts and work a crowd. Whether it be the press conference or the mega fan event, to see him was a treat in itself.

The fan event in Seoul, which took place at an indoor stadium Jangchung Arena, hosted 4000 fans, including myself. A moment was created where all the fans with the Avengers sign-glowsticks thanked The Avengers team. It not only had Brie in tears, but a surprise re-entrance by Mr. Downey saw the actor having an overwhelming moment. Did I cry? I will neither confirm nor deny that! The lines were blurred between an entertainment journalist and an MCU fangirl that day.

As I conclude, at the fan event, in succession, the 4 Avengers trailers were shown. Seeing the first Avengers trailer and watching Iron Man being saved by The Hulk, I had the same goosebumps-feeling I felt, back in 2012. Oh, how life comes full circle, indeed! There has never been a franchise like the MCU with a successful decade-long journey curating 21 larger than life films, with the culmination being Endgame. They have changed the landscape of storytelling and created a universe, which almost feels like reality. Here's to the superheroes.

Love,
MCU fangirl
