Vidhu Vinod Chopra: 'Rubbish films are making 100 crore!' [TOI Interview]
Excellent interview! I couldn't agree more with him about rubbish and mindless films making 100 crore recently. And I respect him for not making such rubbish films just to have a 100 crore film. Lets hope all filmmakers in Bollywood will come to their senses and will stop making such mindless movies! And more importantly, lets hope the audience will stop watching such films! Your thoughts? Do you all agree with Vidhu Vinod Chopra that rubbish films are making 100 crore? Vidhu Vinod Chopra: 'Rubbish films are making 100 crore!' A brazenly politically incorrect Vidhu Vinod Chopra on why his CA doesn't love his latest film, but the audience will. Vidhu Vinod Chopra ko gussa kyun aata hai? Gussa zyaada aata hai; ab pehle se kam aata hai, lekin usske aane ka kaaran kya hai, that's the important thing. When I look at the mediocrity of Indian cinema, when I look at some rubbish being made and people hailing it because it is touching 100 crores, I get angry. I say ki tum logon ka koi dharam imaan hai nahi kya? But if you talk of that, the obvious answer a filmmaker will give you is ki dhanda hai, paisa toh chahiye... Dhande ka bhi to dharam imaan hona chahiye na yaar! Humne "3 Idiots" mein bahut business kiya, toh dhanda to achha hua. "Ferrari Ki Sawaari" bhi aap likh ke le lo, bahut achha dhanda karegi. Lekin dhanda ka usool hona chahiye. Maine "Parinda" mein dialogue likha thaa, Nana Patekar bolta hai, 'yeh dhanda hai, Kishan, aur har dhande ka usool hota hai'. We change lives. So many people are impacted by cinema. With "Munna Bhai", with "3 Idiots", with every film we've done, we've touched lives. That is the job of a filmmaker. And a filmmaker has a social responsibility, and he can't escape it, just the way you have a social responsibility if you are a journalist, and you can't escape that - whether or not you print this. We all create realities and impressions. I have not made the third "Munna Bhai" because I am not happy with the script. While I know that even if I make absolute rubbish, I will make 200 crores in the first three days. By the time you all realise on Monday that I have really made a bad film, I have collected the money and gone home. But I won't. Because these are the things that annoy me. The thinking that till yesterday I am a third-rate filmmaker but today my film has done 100 crores, so I'm acceptable! You revel in being the outsider, the outspoken maverick, don't you? That is for you to see (laughs). We've just had a retrospective in Mumbai and realised we've made just 10-11 films in thirty years, which is not a good average. " Ferrari..." took us four years to write, "3 Idiots" took us three years, "Munna Bhai" we are writing for the last three-and-a-half years, even though agar main s*** film bhi banaoon toh yeh jo monkey brain films aa rahi hain, opening toh inse zyaada hi lagegi. Yeh 100 crore karti hain, main 200 crore kar loonga. Aap Monday ko likh dena, film achhi nahi hai, main interview de doonga, haan, maine koshish toh ki lekin story achhi nahi thi... main toh chala gaya na 200 le ke (laughs)! Raju Hirani's such a successful director, we've been writing his next film for almost three years now. In any other company, Raju would have done ten films by now. Lekin humko nahi farak padta. If it's 100 crores that we're talking about, what's your take on Bhansali producing a "Rowdy Rathore", then? I am not happy about it. He has worked with me for eight years. He considers me his mentor. I hope he will come out of it. But again, I can't be judgmental; I don't know what kind of rejection he had to go through when he made "Guzaarish". He told some interviewer that you never came here after "Guzaarish", you're here now - and he's right. Maybe this is some kind of revenge he's taking on the mediocrity that exists. He's seeking some kind of recognition and acceptance, and if it's coming through this kind of cinema, then it's sad. But I would like to meet and talk to him to understand that what drives an artist to this. I hope I'll never be driven to this. And if you are? Let me explain something. When we were making "Lage Raho Munna Bhai", I called my chartered accountant and said, 'let's release "Lage Raho..." and "Eklavya" in the same year'. He asked, 'why'? I said, "'Lage Raho..." will make a lot of money, and "Eklavya" will lose a lot of money, so we'll not have to pay any tax. He said, 'arre, aisa mat boliye, apshagun hota hai'. I said, 'arre, main 100% bol raha hoon, "Eklavya" India mein nahi chalne wali, baahar chalegi'. He then asked, 'phir aapne banai kyun?' Maine kaha, 'yaar, yeh main tujhe kaise samjhaoon, this is about my beliefs and the things I am at peace with'. How can I explain to a CA why I made that film? How can I explain to a CA why, after "3 Idiots", I made my next film with no big stars? One never knows what life will be like ten years from now, but I very much doubt that my life will be led by a chartered accountant. I don't think I will change now. I have enough money to last me till I die. My needs and my life are very simple. And I don't give a **** what my public image is. Kuch nahi chahiye... (pause) mujhe ek plane khareedna hai yaar, main woh nahi khareed sakta, bas. Mujhe yeh airport ki lines mein khada hona pasand nahi... Don't tell me, after "3 Idiots", you couldn't buy a plane? Arrey, bada plane, chhota nahi chahiye. Woh 330 crore ka aata hai, phir maintain karna bhi bada complex hai. Given your views, there must be some well-known stars who asked to work with you and it hasn't worked out? Too many to name. I won't name them; it's cheap to do so... I cannot. Can you imagine some of these big stars and me even in the same frame? You can't! I wish them well and may they earn crores in signing amounts and may their fan following increase - but I don't think I can sit and talk to them. How do I explain... On the day "Munna Bhai MBBS" released, the first show hardly sold. The first day we were minus four crores or so. Raju Hirani - ab toh 'Raj Kumar Hirani' ho gaya hai - bahut udaas thaa release ke din. I gave him eleven thousand rupees and said, yeh picture toh gayi, jaa, agli bana, yeh uska signing amount hai. That's how I have approached cinema. And that's how I will. Who are your friends in the industry? I have no friends. And I'm not saying it with any regrets. I have an extended cinema family, beyond which I have no friends. My expectations from friendship are so great that in the present situation it is difficult to get a friend, because everybody is so self-centred and wants to use you in one way or the other, or get used to move on. I'm very, very comfortable not having friends, actually. I'm quite blessed that way, Karan Johar said to me. Karan Johar - when asked a question on camps in Bollywood some years ago - had said that camps need loyalty, and there's very little loyalty, so the question of camps doesn't arise. (Laughs) He's right. I am not a very friendly type waise bhi, bachpan se. In DAV High School in Srinagar, as the monitor of my class, I ran it as a dictator, so I never had many friends even then. When I went to film school, I was so involved in cinema 24/7 that I made no friends, and it went on and on, and here I am. My friend is my cinema. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/bollywood/news-interviews/Rubbish-films-are-making-100-crore/articleshow/14124072.cms

and 100 crore koi bhi film aise hi nahi kamaati agar janta ko pasand aayegi tabhi sau crore kamayegi..
Itna bada filmaker hokar b itni
choti soch wali baatein karta hai...
apni Movies achchi hai to unki tareef sunkar Khush raho...
Doosro ke Success ko dekh kar kyu jalte ho...
and If Someone Read this and please forward this message to him.
He is a Good Filmaker but a Bad Human who has no control over His tongue....
The latest 100 crore club has not so perfect actresses Vidya and Sonakshi. The main reason is the younger generation who make the biggest chunk of bollywood viweres and should second only to aunties...is terribly obsessed with looking good. An inch more here or there and all hell breaks loose. Young moviegoers are most afflicted with it. They wanna go on movie dates with their latest male accessories to make all their besties jealous and dress to kill it is supposed to be their big night night but won't tolerate their man ogling for three long hours at an actresses perfected assets mentioning it. I saw a couple fight in the theatre with the girl screaming my butt is better than hers so shut up. Plastics in Bollywood will fail thanks to the younger female viewers.

He is kinda right where a movie like Robot can earn 375 crore worldwide
what to expect

Endhiran boasts a good story line with good effects. Juxtapose with Ra.One. Crappy story hence it crappy collection.
Endhiran is the BIGGEST indian cinema
this think he is only sensible filmmaker. remember they other mvies dat er better dan 3 idiot and er nt succesfull d audience decides film fate no filmmaker even if it take u100yrs to film a scene it might tank in d box office . where were u b4 munnah bhai &3 idiot and ur here envying others success & callin it rubish if u er nt comfortable why say it go make d type mvies u want & watch them, no is here 2 please u.
Well no lies was spoken der. Dats why bollywood is tagged has rubbish, rip-off cinema. Even nollywood movies r better than bollywood n dats saying something. However cnt only blame the directors, screen writers n actors, it comes down to supply n demand. The indian audience for the most part don't demand original movies, with solid direction n actin dey demand mindless copies of hollywood rip-off's n absolutely chessy comedy with one khan in it n its a blockbuster. The bollywood audience really needs to UP their standards.
Totally agree with him... Watching some of the 100 cr movies, it gives me headaches... after watching 10 mins, I wonder where are logics, storylines and contents. These movies lack sensibility and contents... there are no acting nor performances whatsoever. It's a shame that people making these type of movies are laughing all the way to bank, and its so discouraging for those talented filmmakers being sidelined and not recognized for their crafts. Shame on bollywood industry for allowing this. Being an NYC graduate, I have no tolerance for bollywood sleazy movies.
Without Raju Hirani this guy would be no where now. basking in his glory
I think Vidhu Vindo Chopra hasnt had yet seen such a success and his anger is just a part of this . SLB just had to be ethical and produc a film like Rowdy Rathore. I wont eb surprised if Chopra takes such a step in frture as well.
3 Idiots was borderline rubbish too. I just didn't understand the hype. It was cheesy as anything!
_____________________
But it had a message that was more relate-able and much more worthwhile. Heck my own parents turned to me, pointed at the screen and said, "that's you!!" when they showed the story of the guy forced to be an engineer even though he wants to be a photographer. Now, I'm an engineer AND a photographer.
Nice interview. Munna bhai to 3 idiots all r very entertaining with gud values and message, not a stereo types masala movie.
India me nahi chalegi, baahar chalegi..
Really? So do you mean to say that in India intelligent movies don't work and outside they work? Then can you explain what was Transformers 3? What was POTC 4? What was Ice Age 3? All these were rubbish. The clicking factor was effects or animation. And btw, your story of a baby being delivered by a Vacuum Cleaner was really R. So how can you prove that intelligent movies work outside? And if your 'Eklavya' was so intelligent, why was it kicked out from the Oscars without even reaching to the final 5?
The thing is, it's not about India. Please don't insult this country. First check out the data of top 10 non-USA all time high grossing movies and then say. And still if you feel that Indians do not deserve such a genius movie maker like you, why don't you try outside? Compete with Nolan and Scorsese, if you are of a different level. Who are Anurag Kashyaps and Deebakar Banerjees? Nothing compared to you, right? (After all, they are Indians.)
I agree with him, although I'm not a huge fan of his movies either. At least he tries.
I don't understand what buffoons watch Salman Khan/ Akshay Kumar movies and make them into big hits, they are to blame for the continuous crap being produced by bolly.
3 Idiots was borderline rubbish too. I just didn't understand the hype. It was cheesy as anything!
@ pinkvilla_boy
ROBOT was not a rubbish movie.....technology and vfx was superb and as someone else said, it was a path breaking movie for india and most importantly it ha a GOOD story...
you can call movies like BODYGAURD,HOUSEFULL2, READY, GOLMAAL3, RA1, etc rubbish!!!
kahin Vidhu Vinod Chopra "Robot" ki succes say to jelous nahi ho raha ?? !!!
ha ha ha ha ha bechaaaraaa . ..
i agreee, but he sounds REALLY bitter.
toh kiyu aap film family oriented banate....aaj kal tu hum tv serial dekte hai. I miss family oriented film with indian values and culture..Do the census and find out how many ppl are waiting for a good hindi story films. They are waiting for..,,,I am going back watching films of Vinod Mehra , Sanjeev Kumar Raj kumar and Reena Roy rakhee hema all those old actors movies....These days all the actresses are western looking all look the same.....take for eg. Housefull , can say who is who...becos they all look the same.,,,
The other issue is non hindi spking actors...it annoys the hell out of me,,,when the movie is dubbed.....
I can say now I only watch movies with Sonakshi kareena. pc karisma and waiting for Sridevi movies....
This is my opinion...
Make good family story films. These days remaking Don and so on why cannot they make Prem Rog Sambhand and so on.....
Right on, you tell it like it is VVC! :)

Mr. VINOD you know you're a 3 times Idiot... a 100 crore earning movie has some incredible material in it that's why it makes such a huge collection... and by the way people like masala movies more than movies having good scripts... if you think ROWDY RATHORE was rubbish then same your MUNNABHAI is (aise hi kisi ke dimaag mein baapu sama gaye woh bhi itne bade gunde ke... yeh bhi masala hai Sir)... i'm not insulting you Sir cause i know you're a smart Producer... and as far as SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI is concered, he's an intelligent guy that's why he has produced a masala movie cause these movies collect a huge amount now-a-days than the movies having good PLOT.....!!!! his movies have were a big disaster (like SAAWARIYA and GUZAARISH) so why doesn't he want to recover his cost by producing masala movies... he knows such movies earn a huge amount of profit, that's why he did so..... :)
----------------------------------------------------------
Munnabhai had a clear message even though it was a masala film! It wasn't mindless! But Rowdy Rathore like movies, how can you not call them rubbish??? Everything from beginning to end in Rawody Rathore was rubbish with a capital R! Like seriously a cop begging a villain to release his wife, but the villain's son saying he is not done with the wife of the cop yet and he will only release her once he is done, like really??? How disgusting and how rubbish! Can't believe such things pass the censor board! What message does that have when a woman is demeaned so badly in the name of entertainment and masala and the cops are shown so powerless??? I just can't understand the mindset of the audience who watch these dirty and mindless movies again and again and again and make them get 100 crore! You don't have to be educated to have common sense that such things are inherently immoral and unethical and totally disgusting! It is a pity that they make so much money!
Very well said Vidhu Vinod Chopra! I couldn't agree more with you!

this dude is so dumb people enjoy different things....theres no one type of cinema like theres no one type of music.
-----------------------------------------------
The only dumb one is you. You didn't get what VVC was trying to say at all. Today, bollywood film makers take the easy way out and make rubbish films with no decent or substantial script just to make crores.Yes there are different types of cinema but tell me one thing, do you think Bodyguard was a GOOD MOVIE? Was Housefull a GOOD MOVIE? Was Rowdy Rathore a GOOD MOVIE? The dialogues were bad, the plot was awful, and the acting was bad in these films. That's what he's trying to tell you.
VVC is spot on. Friends in bw are a Liability it is often said and proved time and time again. Camps don't really work. And when forced/obliged out of friendships to work together all the time the quality of work suffers. People are bored of seeing the same people everywhere. Loyalty is sold and bartered for a good deal. How is that friendship? BW is a business afterall. It is refreshing to see a well content, super confident and secure in himself V V C not crib about having no friends in the industry.
Very true about what he said. however couldn't help but feel that he was definitely bitter and LOL at his 'bada plane chahiye' comment. like really.
viewers will pay to watch what they wanna watch. Makers cannot force the viewers to like their products. Those who know the pulse of the public will profit. Bad economy & rising inflation sees viewers venture towards mindless celluloid escapism fare.
Film stars need to woo the viewers not themselves. Moviegoers want to feel loved and complimented for buying a ticket. Page 3 bs does not lure them to theatres. How does it benefit viewers battling high prices and a weak economy if the main star cast are screwing each other? Makers need to be more in touch with the mindsets of the viewers. The starcast's public image too has a big hand in selling tickets nowadays.
I agree with everything he said. It still boggles my mind how Bodyguard is like the second highest grossing movie in India. I can't really fault filmmakers for making dumb movies if the AUDIENCE is so desperate to spend their money on them. Rubbish films like Ready, Ra.one, Golmaal, Rowdy Rathore, Houseful, Robot, Dabangg, etc are still making crores like there's no tomorrow and filmmakers are just taking advantage of that.
Wasn't like 3 idiots was a masterpiece but the rest of what he was saying is true! Pot calling kettle black
its not only in bollywood even in hollywood. some movies that are whack get back alot of money. its entertainment not only about lessons to learn and teach. some people might not want to watch a romantic movie, comedy, thriller , horror, etc....people like different things. people take things too seriously i dont get how people can't move on cause this world is not gonna stop for anybody.
this dude is so dumb people enjoy different things....theres no one type of cinema like theres no one type of music.
Yeah! Agree..Housefull,ratore,bodyguard etc all crap make it there. But classy films like Guzaarish don't.Silly Indian audience!
Totally agree with VVC. The kind of movies that are entering the 100Cr club are an insult to bollywood.
Unclassy, vulgar, cheap jokes are what make a hit these days. The munnabhai series and other raju hirani movies have been movies with a message.
Housefull franchise, Dabanng, Bodyguard, Rowdy Rathore are hitting the 100Cr mark. That is something shameful..
please everybody should stop this hypocrisy..even in hollywood entertainment sells more than oscar critics movies...,tell me why an oscar film like the the artist find it difficult to gross money at the us boxoffice like crappy transformers and stupid twillight movies
