I am totally digging this cover. Its different and refreshing from a lot of previous Vogue India covers. And the model in the first photo is Gia johnson. She is just fierce.
features the hot super models Gia Johnson, Nethra Raghuraman, Tinu Verghis, Ashika Pratt and Esha Gupta on the cover page.

The models have been styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania and photgraphed by Prabuddha Dasgupta.

As much as I like this cover, they could have done better. Where is the dark chocolate, and ebony Indian women?

Anonymous's picture

HAWTTT! and, especially liked the pic of the two girls with the one in the green lying down.

Anonymous's picture

the blonde in the middle looks like an stern desi schoolteacher we knew (just with a twist... she got upset, and cut and colored her hair in a mad fit ). the rest of them all look Indian. comeon, ppl. you all must know some Indians with those type features. yes. Indian women often do have thinner lips and high cheekbones too. most of them are considered 'ordinary' in India and often overlooked perhaps because their unpopular skin tone attracts no attention and/or in favor of doll-typed girlish Sridevi/Aish petite featured faced....

Anonymous's picture

hey.. hold it. perhaps ppl would be more comfortable with this Western swimsuit bit.. if this had a 'beauty pageant' theme.. you know, get some judges in front of them to rate them and win a title and such.. then they could go on and endorse some Western products... ...now that's good old fashioned Indian!!

Anonymous's picture

The model on the left in her 'Indian avvatar'...
http://www.tribuneindia.com/2004/20041124/pun1.jpg

hmmm... same face . How much more Indian face do ppl want.. that's what an Indian looks like. And since when were Indians not allowed to be tall or thin? Fact is, most Femina India winners (Miss Indias) are tall and lithe, go on stage in bathing suits to be judged.. (but cause they have round doll faces-- it's totally non-Western ! ). go figure...

this is a celebration of the bronze tone.. not an Indian diversity poster- or as one Pinkvilla post wrongly states, celebration of Indian skin. No where does it ever state it is associated with anything Indian. Yet, these ARE models of Indian heritage who celebrate the bronze tone. hopefully, it challenges ppl into re-thinking their concepts of what's East/West/ugly/pretty.. and expanding their ideas.

DAMN, the first few shots are quite smokin'!!

Anonymous's picture

i dont nw why ppl r sayin that these girl dont look like indians..i look a bit like the girl who is layin down in the 2nd pic nd im complty, 100% indian. not all indian have round fat face.

Anonymous on Sat, 2010-04-03 18:31: You don't need to be anglo to be successful. -> no kidding, who was implying this???!!!! just bcoz ppl point out someone's heritage does not mean they are implying they're successful. jumping to wobbly conclusions..

Anonymous's picture

and this post is not about Padama or Salman being anglo.. let's concentrate on the topic on hand. these models are absolutely gorgeous.

Whether right or wrong, the West often chooses to call him anglo-Indian- his bios says so...:

http://www.gradesaver.com/author/salman-rushdie/

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-anglo-indian-novelist-salman-rushd...

--and who says anyone is insinuating every successful person is an Anglo??!!! reading a bit too much and off the far end. and how did Freida come in this post, no one is saying she's an Anglo..

Anonymous's picture

who cares about Padama and them..

these models look ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous's picture

Rushdie is not an anglo indian...guys...not every famous person is anglo indian. You don't need to be anglo to be successful. Now dont tell me Freida is also anglo indian. She is not - she may have an anglo name, but she is 100% Indian.

Anonymous on Fri, 2010-04-02 17:50: disagree with you.. first of all, none of them are fair in the pose- this is a celebration of the bronze color;; none of them are wearing fako contacts. only one is having fako hair color. the rest kept their luscious dark locks real dark..

if this makes some % of the Indian youth want to embrace their natural color (even if society currently considers it unattractive), stop wearing fake colored contacts, keep physically fit and appear like a STRONG WOMAN, and not a silly girl.. it's great !!

these models do not like girls, they look like STRONG POWERFUL WOMEN .. MEZMERIZING. THIS IS THE NEW GENERATION OF INDIAN YOUTHS.. STRONG.

Anonymous's picture

what is this West West thing. cannot understand the fuss ppl are creating. Going by the cover (last photo), they look gr8, fantastico !!!! and yes, mainly Indian. ppl are getting fooled by the swimsuits & poses, but if you see the face structue on most of em, it's Indian, buddy. well, dunno any Indian friends who look like the middle 2 by face.. but the one on the left the two on the right.. know many Indian friends who have the same face shape. comeon.. it's rather common looking features on em. this is an Indian looking cover.. albeit, it's a Western pose and clothes. the fake blonde in the middle is fooling ppl into thinking the rest don't look Indian. they really all do, in fact.

ppl just are mad that they didn't pick their fave star baby girl top Bollywood actress to be on the cover, wearing Loreal hair color and foreign clothes and pretending to be Indian..

Anonymous's picture

Anonymous on Fri, 2010-04-02 17:50: Western copycats? for that turn to Bollywood status quo top actresses of today: 90% of them these days color their hair lighter.. pancake lighter or bleach themselves up.. wear lighter contacts.. and dress in all the latest fads off-screen . So what exactly are they????!!! Being their Eastern culture??? NOT!!! Just because someone's face is round & Indian looking.. does not mean they're off the hook...

These are models .. except for one, all of them have black or dark hair. All of them have dark eyes.. their bronze tone reflects a color which is so common in India but rarely shown in the media. THEY LOOK FAR MORE INDIAN IN FACT THAN THE BOLLYWOOD WESTERN COPYCATS...

Anonymous's picture

for all those who don't like round doll type girlish faces of the Bollywood belle, this is a refreshing change ! these models look FAB

Anonymous's picture

other girls look hot, but whoever the one in the middle is... they are celebrating skin tone, they can't be covered up in saris or salwars, if it says celebration of indians or indian culture, then this picture would be inappropriate.

Anonymous's picture

the one on the left and the two on the right of the cover look 1000000000000% Indian.. comeon.. rounded cheeks and a bit roundness in the features-- just a little oval. if you put a salwar and choti on the one in the left, she would look like a Behenji type! what is this.. they look West West... can't Indian women wear swimsuits to the beach???!!!! and if they are celebrating a skin tone, they will show them in beachwear...

it's so great.. they look sooo FANTASTIC.. what is all the fuss about, ppl!!???

Anonymous's picture

yeah.. Padama is 100% Indian.. but a LOT of NRIs are now of mixed heritage.. partially Indian and other races. Indians are mixing up culturally.. and looking different.. in this new generation..

Anonymous's picture

padma lakshmi is full malayalee (kerala).

Sometimes, we as Indians tend to resist our notions of what Indian beauty is, as beauty is something that is taught since childhood and we're told 'this is beauty; this is not'. Anyone who does not fit that deep psyche programmed in our minds is a threat... or it's a fake or a fad or a sham. Why should we be so stern and strict with our beauty notions..? Indian women have an amazing range of diversity, if we look CAREFULLY, especially at those we dismiss easily in society. We are too busy focusing on our favorite faces to expand our notions...

This cover is so new.. it challenges the status quo!

Look closely.. the faces sometimes resemble many of our friends we know who are Indian.. and sometimes they do not. There ARE Indian typical features in some and we feel safe;; in others, there are features which make us think: no, it's not Indian, it's not right.. it's too this/that.... OH, but they all Indian or of mixed Indian heritage,, and they are all so beautiful !!

Anonymous's picture

Indian women can be tall and have perfect figures the world covets.. and a bronze skin tone the world covets. Yes, there are Indian women like this !!!! LOVELY.

Anonymous's picture

they look amazing, an incredible reflection the beauty of Indian women.

Anonymous's picture

THEY ARE SO GORGEOUS !!!!!

When are people going to realize that Indians look all sorts of different ways?
there are so many NRI women and women in metros.. who are 100% Indian who look like them. please. this West West thing has little basis.
Are not Padma Lakshmi and Maailika Arora- women who looked like women, not girls, even at 21-- as much Indian with their high cheekbones -- in a world of Bollywood barbie doll girls?

Yes Indian women can be tall, lithe and have high cheekbones. they are often not noted as much in the Indian media, because Bollywood likes more baby-faced girl traditional types. but these are how some proportion of 100% Indians look too. just because an Indian dresses for the beach does not mean they are Western all of a sudden..

and you know what? hormones do come into play on how women look. have seen desi gals who are more pampered and/or live at home with their family till late 20's or something.. who are referred as girls and think of themselves as girls.. have a more 'girlish' round faced youthful look, even till their late 30's. yes, they don't like the above...

but the Indian women who at 21, think of themselves as adults... move out of the home (sometimes with no $)... and start fending for themselves probably have a bit more different hormones (including stress), which starts shaping their features more powerfully. They get stronger fiercer faces (which is womanly and appeals to the West;; but not to the East as much). So that's the ravishingly gorgeous womanly look, which comes from leadership powe!

Yes, this is how some young modern Indian women are looking today !

Anonymous's picture

kinda looks like when the girls from 90210 did a cover for a magazine

Anonymous's picture

Not only mixed races.. there are lots of 100% Indian women with 'different' features, ie. high cheekbones and longer face-- who do look like them.

ppl wanna say they do not look Indian resist that Indians all do look DIFFERENT.

Anonymous's picture

Padama never reveals who her father is.. but in some bios, it's listed as someone non-Indian, as reported he moved back to his country.. she said she was with Salman R. because he reminded her of her father.. and Salman in an Anglo-Indian

sca4ever's picture

Whoever said that these girls look "fair" should get their eyes checked. These are gorgeous, DARK beauties! They make milky Katrina and pale, out-of-shape Aish look like plain Janes.

Anonymous's picture

these girls are so fierce , they blow all the deepika and katrinas out of the water, these are international standard models. Lots of Indian girls have looks which can make them pass of Brazilian or Hispanic, because Indians are a mixed race themselves.

cherrycrush's picture

padma lakshmi is not anglo indian - she has 100% south indian ancestry.
