The Kapoor Khandaan's iconic RK Studios was sold to Godrej Properties this year after attempts to revive it failed. With the sale, the legacy of RK Studios came to an end and drew the curtains on the illustrious era of Bollywood which was started by the grandest showman Raj Kapoor in Mumbai's Chembur area around 70 years ago. The studio, which was one of the top locations to shoot films back in the day, was up for sale after facing losses and a portion of the studio was gutted down in a fire that took place in 2017.

According to a latest report in Times of India, the famous two-acre studio is likely to be grounded today. Godrej Properties who have already taken over the property will be using the land to build luxury residences. "Spread across 2.2 acres, this project will offer approximately 33,000 square meters (about 0.35 million square feet) of saleable area comprising modern residential apartments of various configurations as well as a luxury retail experience," the company had said in a statement earlier.

Speaking to Mumbai Mirror about the decision of sale, Rishi Kapoor had earlier said, "For a while, we did juggle with the idea of renovating the place with state-of-the-art technology. However, in reality, it isn’t always possible for a phoenix to rise from the ashes. The investment in rebuilding the studio would just not have yielded sufficient revenue to keep it going. Believe me, we had to take the larger picture into account and take a level-headed decision." Scores of blockbuster movies were shot on the premises of RK Studios, particularly in the 1970s and 80s.
