Kishore Kumar’s first wife, actor and singer Ruma Guha Thakurta passes away at 84

Veteran Indian Bengali singer and actress Ruma Guha Thakurta passed away at the age of 84 today morning, at her Ballygunge residence in Kolkata. Daughter of Satyen Ghosh (Monty Ghosh) and singer Sati Devi, she founded the Calcutta Youth Choir in 1958. Thakurta was superstar Kishore Kumar’s first wife. The couple got married in 1950 and have a son named Amit Kumar. However, they got divorced in 1958 and while Ruma went on to marry Arup Guha Thakurta, Kishore Kumar moved on to marry Madhubala.

Ruma Guha Thakurta began her acting career with Amiya Chakravarty's Jwar Bhata in 1944. She went on to work in films like Mashaal, Afsar, Ganga, Indrajit and The Namesake and was applauded for her powerful performance in Satyajit Ray directorial Ganashatru (1989) and Abhijaan (1962). As a playback singer, Thakurta worked in films Baghini, Mera Dharam Meri Maa, Barnali and Lukochuri. Her son Amit Kumar, who has taken after his mother, is a singer and composer for Bollywood movies.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister West Bengal, took to her social media handle to mourn the singer’s demise. She wrote: “Saddened at the passing away of Ruma Guha Thakurta. Her contribution to the field of cinema and music will always be remembered. My condolences to her family and her admirers.”
