Priyanka Chopra at the India Today Youth Summit
Priyanka Chopra was one of the speakers at the India Today Mind Rocks Youth Summit 2012. Here are some of her quotes from the summit. I have no godfather in film industry. I was a teenager who did not even know how to wear heels but I learnt. I went to study in the US where I was bullied for being a brownie, but I survived I made the journey from Bareilly to Boston. If I can, so can you. I was gawky imperfect, had low self-esteem, came from a modest middle-class background, had white marks on my legs. But I was damn hard working. Today, my legs sell 12 brands My features were not perfect but I smiled through all of it as I was told I had the perfect smile. Never mind if people think my smile was because of plastic surgery When I entered the film industry, I was rejected several times. People thought I was too dusky I had no godfather in the film industry, yet I went on to win a national award for Fashion, despite people telling me not to do the movie. I am not the prettiest of all, I am not Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. It's okay to be different. You don't have to fit in always. Asked what she does with all the money she earns, she said, "I am a big miser." The best part about being in this industry is the support that I get from my fans and the worst part of this industry is the gossip-hunger media.

@princessruchi
it's really hard to take you seriously talking about genuine attitude when you have kareena's picture as your profile icon. trust me that goes against everything you just said as that woman kareena is anything but genuine. so take that pic off and then maybe we will take you seriously.............
@Sun, 2012-09-09 18:02 — Anonymous Mentioning Kareena and SRK in your argument made your argument very weak! Kareena and SRK have nothing to do with this discussion so please keep them away if you want to make a valid point!
I have no godfather in film industry -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
But I have piggybacked on other superstars(esp Akshay) to get where I want to. I was also a miss world with an easy entry in Bolywood.
I was a teenager who did not even know how to wear heels but I learnt. I went to study in the US where I was bullied for being a brownie, but I survived -
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I consider minor bullying episode in school as Racism which is a serious issue.
I made the journey from Bareilly to Boston. If I can, so can you. -
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I consider going from Bareilly to Boston as a big accomplishment. WOW!
I was gawky imperfect, had low self-esteem, came from a modest middle-class background, had white marks on my legs. But I was damn hard working. Today, my legs sell 12 brands -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WOW I like to praise myself indirectly coz people dont get that as arrogance as compared to people who praise themselves directly!
My features were not perfect but I smiled through all of it as I was told I had the perfect smile. Never mind if people think my smile was because of plastic surgery -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have never had plastic surgery ..Yes yes believe me ..be yourself guys I always was ! BELIEVE ME BELIEVE ME!
When I entered the film industry, I was rejected several times. People thought I was too dusky - Anyone who rejects me is a racist ..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Americans are racist, Indians are racist, the whole world is a racist!
I had no godfather in the film industry, yet I went on to win a national award for Fashion, despite people telling me not to do the movie -
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
People told me not to do the movie when every actress world her salt was dying to get that role. Wow what a lie ! Also, please dont ever forget I won a national award coz I use that as a defence everytime people call me a mediocre actress.
I am not the prettiest of all, I am not Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. -
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ash is successful coz she is pretty and I am not , despite that I am successful...go figure!

You completely lost the argument with the Kareena and SRK bit. Look sweets, I don't engage in fan wars, thats just not my thing. If you care to read my other comments on this website you'll see that I'm rather fond of Priyanka. I didn't even bring up the whitening creams argument, that was someone else. All I said was is that I don't get why she said that because as far as I've seen Bollywood has been very welcoming to girls with skintone similar as her's. I didn't call her a liar, I didn't get snarky, I just said I don't get it. All I've ever heard Bipasha say about her skintone is that she deliberately bronzes herself because she likes that look on screen, shes probably a few shades lighter in real life. And if she did make a statement such as that, I wouldn't have understood where it came from either.
If you do want to engage in a fan war or any argument which is motivated by the commenter liking a particular celebrity and 'hating' the other then I'm not your girl, you'd have to find someone else.
@Anonymous (Sun, 2012-09-09 18:02)
So you're saying that just because you liked her speech and were inspired by it, someone else couldn't voice questions or concerns regarding that speech? She was delivering a talk, the reception of which is not going to be uniform. Is someone else bashing you for LIKING the talk? No. Then why would you bash someone for having issues with parts of that talk? Priyanka wasn't talking of science or math or delivering a fact-based talk. Of course one will read into her words as opposed to "doing research" regarding it.
What you said about Indians in NYC = SO offensive. Using racists who make fun of Indians to bolster your argument = SO sad. Do you know each Indian in NYC? It is you who ought to do your research before making such gross generalizations. You're making an argument based on your observations, and Mystic_Rose was stating his/her own observations.
No public figure is immune from criticism or discussion, and one can't protest that criticism, when stated fairly and in respectful and well-informed terms, is not kosher just because one is a fan of a certain celebrity. You just brought up SRK and Kareena in your own defense of PC, which illustrates how a public figure's words and actions are invariably up for discussion. One can only hope that discussion is dignified and intelligent, but calling out commenters for having different opinions than yours drags down the level of any discussion.
@ mystic rose: alot of actress who are dusky use that statement also a la bipasha. Hypocrisy that I'm talkin about is the fact that you see the faults in Priyanka as soon as you read something about her. Do you know her personally? I don't know her personally, but by listening to her speak I got positivity out of her speech you gather your own interpretation. Alot of young girls want to be like an actress, singer, etc that they see on tv. All she was saying is it's ok to be yourself. When srk did the same speech at Yale. No one critizened him. It was all praises. Anyway alot of ppl loved her speech. Kareena promoted fairness creams and I don't hear the cages rattling. Anyway we are just an ant to a human. Arguing about someone who have more than 2 million fans on twitter and instagram is pointless.

If you are going to use my name in your comment atleast quote me or state what I said that was so hypocritical to you.
She said "When I entered the film industry, I was rejected several times. People thought I was too dusky", I pointed out that I don't get what she talking about because some of Bollywood's top actresses have had similar skin tone as her's.
She said "I made the journey from Bareilly to Boston. If I can, so can you" and I asked for the context because if I take this statement at face value then 'Boston' isn't much of an achievement, its just a city like any other.
Btw "I live in NYC and the Indians here think they are better than any race, when they are made the most fun of" was said by you, you generalized an entire race and the entire Indian population in NYC on 'some' Indians whom you think behave this way and you are preaching about massive ignorance?
I saw her speech on television today. It was more of a talk rather than a speech. Firstly, she said a lot of things and made a lot of statements that sounded really hypocritical coming from her:
"earlier I always used to think who should I be like. Should I be like madhuri, sridevi(etc). But then I realized its okay to be me. It's okay to be Priyanka. I like being Priyanka"
the way she turns her accent on is really annoying.
She has just contradicted herself so much in the past that it's hard to be someone from the youth and look upto her. Much more enjoyed the other talkers, masaba, ayusshmaan, Sonam-Huma-vir and Imtiaz. It's important to be genuine when you are standing on a podium telling the youth to be "okay in not being perfect" when everything she has done to herself is to make herself perfect. She should learn from Vidya and bebo's talks at the youth summit previously.
Kareena attacked Priyanka first on seasons 1 and 2 of kwk a few printed and video interview and kwk season 3 YouTube it.
It's amazing how ppl see things. We as humans always and I mean always compare ourselves to others. Alot of the comments fail to realize what she was REALLY saying and went straight to drawing their own assumptions. SMHH! EVERY single pageant winner talks about their accomplishments from juhi to PC. I've watched and read their interviews. Every race have an idenity crisis. We are all filled with hypocrisy, because we are all PERFECTLY IMPERFECT HUMANS. ash, Rani, Kajol, all other actresses and actors are, but the stand fail to realize it and attack the owns who have. I live in NYC and the Indians here think they are better than any race, when they are made the most fun of. At my office, they are made fun of their accent, smell, and names. My coworkers ask me how can I be around such ppl and I tell them because they are ppl. Voicewriter and Mystic Rose and alot of commentors need to do alot more extensive research before voicing anything and stop reading into stuff. A few commentors was there when she spoke and they're saying her speech was good. Why base your thoughts on a few exerts?! Massive show of ignorance.
I'm not pointing fingers at Priyanka as much as stating that any actress who endorses fairness cream should simply not make hypocritical statements about skin colour. Obviously they buy into this notion that every Indian woman must aspire to be fair, and that we shouldn't embrace our brown skin tones. Some of these creams may have bleach in them, some might just be clarifying creams, but that's not really the point, is it. It's the idea that they all captalize on fairness as an ideal.
I just have a hard time respecting any actress who has endorsed fairness creams. That doesn't mean I hate/care about them personally or bring that up everytime there is a post on them. I brought it up this time because it was relevant to the discussion.
Everyone in bollywood is so greedy...no matter how much of everything they get they are not satisfied.....they don't care about anyone be it their fans or well wishers but only care about themselves themselves and that's the eternal truth.....i hate everyone who endorses fairness cream cause they tell youngsters that u are not pretty cause you don't use their stupid cream that they themselves don't use....this is height of hypocrisy
and they also charge large sums of money and while giving interviews most of them pretend to be like angles who consider themselves to be very lucky and didn't ever wanted to be an actor and suddenly became one..as if...
i think everyone who endorses a fairness cream is a racist...and worse they all do it for money

@Oxygen it doesn't matter if you say nice things about someone, name dropping in that manner just to make yourself look good is tacky. "Comparison is an act of violence against the self" - Iyanla Vanzant
@Mystic Rose some people will do anything for money, it's sad but true. If Amy Jackson were successful, she too would have been endorsing fairness creams too and she is fully white. :-(
Well,@voiceswriter I don't think she'll ever mean something like that...Pc has always said great things about Ash she's called her the prettiest and has also said that she's an immensely talented actress.Had mentioned her great works in HDDCS etc in some interview.
She atleadt had to work to win the beauty contest, plus her acting is undoubtedly good. You can't compare her success to a star kid, no way.
"I am not the prettiest of all, I am not Aishwarya Rai Bachchan."
Sweet! :)
@Mystic Rose @voiceswriter Yes!thats right..Ash refused to endorse any fairness product..So sonam was signed on.
Whats weird is Dia and Katrina endorsing it, they are both half white! Its just genetics for them not whitening products.
@Voiceswriter
Ohhh...thanks for clearing that up!
By the way, isn't it weird how Esha Deol endorsed a fairness cream? Look at her ad. SMH India SMH. :-(
@MysticRose, as far as I know (Aish gave a statement about this a while back) saying L'Oreal initially issued the ad and she told them she did not sign up to endorse such products because they go against her values or something to that effect and the ad was recalled & discontinued which is part of the reason why only one of such ads exists out of all her ad campaigns for L'Oreal. It was a very controversial topic like five or six years back.
@Voiceswriter
I thought the Aishwarya Loreal Ad was a photoshop creation and she has never endorsed a Loreal whitening product thats why it went to Sonam?
Before we point fingers about fairness endorsements, let us not forget that nearly every major celebrity in Bollywood endorsed fairness products at one point in their career.
Fairness Endorsements
I want to know in which context she said the Bareilly to Boston bit. Boston isn't an achievement, its just another place on the map. I'm sure people from Bareilly living in Bareilly have had bigger personal and professional victories without having to relocate.

She's not trying to attack Aishwarya, you guys are so stupid. She's obviously saying that Aish is prettier than her. Give her a damn break
----------
Its not an attack ..its a backhanded compliment . What she means is that Ash made it coz she was prettiest and she made it despite that LOL.. I would have been offended if I were Ash coz Ash definitely is intelligent enough to look through the statements!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was definitely a backhanded comment. She never should have mentioned Aishwarya's name but she was obviously feel those things that's why she said them.
I don't get the dusky thing either, Kajol and Rani were and are two of Bollywood's most prominent actresses in recent times, especially Kajol who still has a massive fan following and is spoiled for choice when it comes to roles. Bipasha Basu became an instant sensation with Jism and most people were taken by her beauty and her beautiful complexion was largely appreciated.
Uh, excuse me.. she ENDORSES skin lightening products. She did a terrible series of ads for a Ponds cream with Saif. Remember that one? And she spray paints herself, most noticeably her knees and elbows, to appear lighter.
Any actress who endorses skin lightening products is not allowed to intellectually posture about "dusky" skin and all that. Hypocrisy much?
Yeah because it's so easy to win a beauty contest. Go win one! Then talk amd say she was handed a silver platter
---------------------------
Its definitely easier to win a beauty contest than to become a heroine in bollywood, for an outsider. And after a winning a pageant, it is REALLY not all that difficult to get into films. Priyanka is a compulsive liar who has such delusions of grandeur that it is frightening. She should really not be addressing the youth. I just watched Front Row with Anupama Chopra where she interviews the lead cast of Barfi and she once again did not fail to annoy me. Poor Ranbir couldn't get a word in as Priyanka butted in through out. Everything has to be about her.
I saw her sing... she is good but no singer..Even I can sing as well as her ..doesnt mean I can be international popstar.. ridiculous ! Parineeti is a wayy better singer and actress!
Why all of a sudden she is naming Ash ? I understand people look up to her as a role model but PC never mentioned her earlier (in last couple of years) .. Both the names Ash and Salman were included in her recent interviews with TOI and now..If I remember correctly, she has picked Sush over Ash in Koffee with Karan episode with Arjun!
