Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore has been awarded honorary Doctorate of Arts by the Edinburgh Napier University for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.

The 67-year-old, the great-grand niece of noted poet Rabindranath Tagore, received the honour Thursday.

"It is indeed a privilege to be conferred an Honorary Degree by Edinburgh Napier University. It recognises the significant influence of Indian Cinema on the global cultural arena and the small role that I have played in its history. As we celebrate a hundred years of Indian Cinema, this is both a happy and humbling moment," Sharmila said in a statement.

The honour comes just months after the university's Institute for Creative Industries opened the Scottish Centre for Tagore Studies (SCoTS), the first centre of its kind in Britain.

SCoTS promotes Indian culture, education, philosophy, art and literature by highlighting the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913.

"Sharmila has had an astonishing career and her films are enjoyed all over the world. She is an excellent ambassador for Indian culture and at the same time, through her various charity endeavours, is a strong advocate for the educational rights of children in India," said Dame Joan Stringer, principal and vice-chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University.

Waheeda Rahman's body of work was more limited I think ? I'm not entirely sure But Sharmila Tagore's involvement in Bengali cinema and with the likes of Satyajit Ray make her body of work much more varied and substantial. And then there is her role as an icon of sorts, this is a woman who happily posed for in a bikini on an international magazine cover whilst her contemporaries were wrapped in sari's, she also managed in spite of being this liberal icon to become part of a royal family. And she actually is related to the great Rabindranath Tagore that's a well known fact. Say what you will, this woman is well an truly an icon and absolutely deserving of all the honors bestowed upon her !

agree she was a gd actress nd had done roles that many women refused to do during her time ...but i feel waheeda was a better actress along with nutan then sharmila! other women of their time such as saira banu, mumtaz where just eye candy!

Thu, 2012-10-25 20:12 — Voiceswriter :"I am entitled to my opinion and you to yours."...words to live by for sure. Hopefully, you will show the same democratic attitude next time others voice an opinion contrary to your own and your refrain from using words like "haters, losers" etc. to deride them?

To those who think Sharmila Tagore does not qualify for honorary doctorate its high time u watch Devi and Apur Shansar . For me Devi is my favorite especially hn she finally started to believing her father-in - law's beliefs that moment is truely a cinematic briliance at least for me.

Thu, 2012-10-25 13:44 — Voiceswriter - Did you use any logic before coming up with that statement! Rhetorical question btw. How can Waheeda Rehman's modesty disqualify her from an award. She is an incredible actress, one far more skilled in the art than a Sharmila or a Hema, which is not to discredit those actresses but just to highlight the excellence, the underplayed brilliance of Waheeda Rehman's craft. Because she was humble enough to downplay her era and gracious enough to praise the present era, you were "simple" enough to take her words literally! Of course awards are no measure of talent - but couldn't let a statement like yours get by without a rebuttal.

She deserves it. I like her humble statement too.

She has acted in some amazing films before she came to mainstream Hindi cinema. Aparajito is one of the greats and she was lucky enough to debut in a Satyajit Ray film.

and i burnt my a** to get one the old fashioned way ! let alone buttering my guide teacher ! ha ! these film guys get it all so easy ! :(

The 67-year-old, the great-grand niece of noted poet Rabindranath Tagore, ......I dont think she is anyway related directly to RT except for the famed last name.

"With all due respect but when Waheeda ji said that the current phase that Bollywood is in is the golden era and not her evergreen era, she disqualified herself from being awarded any honorary Doctorate of Arts by any University for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema."

Sorry, i usually hate to go personal, but this comment is so petty, it begs disparaging! Having said that, Ill just take the high road with you, because youre the girl that didn't even know who Aung san suu ki was!!

There were better actresses at her times, who I think should be recognized first. Like Waheeda Rehman.

Wow! Another one? These celebs are so lucky.

Wow, has Anonymous (the first commentator) even seen the breadth of Sharmila Tagore's work, not just in Hindi cinema but also Bengali cinema. While most people know her as a leading actress in Bollywood, she has done amazing work in Satyajit Ray movies including the Apu Trilogy, Devi, Seemabaddho and others. I agree with Filmychica that even her work in hindi cinema went beyond just being a prop to taking on challenging roles that defied stereotypes and she absolutely deserves this honor.

good for her!! the lucky kareena is on your side that's why.

Hmmm, not very happy with these doctorates. Hema Malini, Sharmila Tagore etc getting them ? At this rate, after few years Katrina and Sonam might also get."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

to the commenter. please DO NOT compare or name Hema Malini and Sharmila Tagore in the same breath/line as the other two supposed 'actresses', it's insulting. lol

also, why just men deserve such honour? Sharmila Tagore is deserving as well. jeeze.

filmychica's picture

Sharmila Tagore is truly deserving of this honour under the appropriate category.
If you look at her body of work till date and contributions as a whole, she has really outdone herself specially considering that she dared things that women did not back in the day. Good for her.

There has to be some value to these felicitations. A person like Dilip Saab, Amitabh Bachchan, etc are worthy of it...not every person from bollywood.

It is like Saif getting Padma Sree award :-)

People used to buy awards, now they are buying doctorates too ?
