Kollywood film industry has lost a legendary film-maker J Mahendran who passed away on Tuesday morning, April 2 at his residence in Chennai. The director was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Chennai last week and was taken home on Monday night. The legendary director was critically ill since last few days. J Mahendran was 79 years old. The director's son John Mahendran, who is also director shared the news about his sad demise on social media. He tweeted as, "DIRECTOR MAHENDRAN PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING." 

Celebrities and fans of the director have been paying last respects to J Mahendran on Twitter. Also, Mahendran's body will be kept for the public homage at his residence in Chennai and the final rites of the veteran will be performed at 5 PM. The director's film journey has been incredible. Not many know, J Mahendran's directorial venture 'Mullum Malarum' made Rajinikanth the Superstar that he is today. In fact, many big directors like Mani Ratnam and Shankar have been inspired by Tamil film-maker J Mahendran's work.

The director made an immediate impact with his first directional venture Mullum Malarum (1978). The film featured Rajinikanth, Sarath Babu, Fatafat Jayalaxmi and Shobha.

“I would not have made the film if Rajinikanth had not been in it. I had a producer who never turned up on the sets; but I had Rajinikanth, Ilaiyaraaja for the background score and Balu Mahendra for the camera. Naturally, the film was a success," he once said in an interview.

His collaboration with Rajinikanth was a huge hit with more films like Johnny and Kai Kodukkum Kai.

His 1979 film Uthiri Pookal is said to be one of the finest films of the Tamil cinema. He is known for making some real content films and that was the only reason he stepped into film-making. In one of the interviews to The Hindi, the director revealed as, "It is my anger towards Tamil films that motivated me to make films that are real, where people smiled and spoke normally. I made films for pleasure and not for commercial success." 

J Mahendran has also appeared as an actor in a few films, last being Rajinikanth's Petta.  He also played the villain in Vijay’s Theri and the film won him the Best Villain Award at IIFA Utsavam in 2017. He was also seen in Vijay Sethupathi’s 'Seethakaathi' playing a small role.
