Here is a special treat to Bollywood and Rajesh Khanna fans. A BBC documentary from 1973 on Rajesh Khanna; The time he was the superstar. It features interviews, movie premieres, his wedding to Dimple and also the Filmfare awards from back then.
This documentary was broadcast as part the 'Man Alive' series on BBC 2 in 1973. Later repeated in 1982 & as part of the 'Festival of India' that took place that summer in the UK.
Special thanks to the person who uploaded it to youtube. This is indeed a very rare video.

I was the person who uploaded these videos from my collection. Glad you are sharing them, that was the whole point so the maximum number of people could see them.
They are a memory of a time past when Rajesh ruled & show how the industry was in those days.
Pavitra
the actors and actresses looked so mature in those days. Rajesh can't believe only 31, and Mumtaz only 24.
Both look like older aunty and uncle type.
Now it's just the opposite old men in their 40s playing college students (Amir) and 25 year old guys (saif) or just overall buffons rather than mature men.
To Hema Malini for Seeta Aur Geeta I meant to say! ;)
Finally I had a chance to watch the whole thing... What a rare treasure, to get a glimpse into those bygone days. Devyani Chaubal was hilarious! Mumtaz and Dimple were so pretty, Rajesh was so handsome. That was funny that they took TWENTY takes of him jumping on the rock! LOL. Although this doc did not exactly paint RK in a complimentary way it was still a nice watch. BTW at the Filmfare awards that they showed, that was a clip of Amitabh Bachchan presenting the Best Actress award to Hema Malini! :)
Interesting tidbit from the bollywoodnewsstories-
So what do we say about the rapport that gossip columnist Devyani Chaubal shared with superstar Rajesh Khanna? The two loved to hate one another. Eventually the dreaded Devyani (whose column Devi’s Frankly Speaking made Bollywood shudder in collective embarrassment) confessed to having slept with her star-friend, though the encounter, she said, was disastrous.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I had never seen an interview of rajesh's and it's amazing to see that. he is so cute n sweet in this one I clicked on. Ok, watching the other vidoes now.
Also tag the post please.. so others can see it too.
Thank you SO much!!!
I wish they would repeat it more.. so then may be THEN.. people would have realized how important he was..
Tag the post or no one can find it.
This is a very touching documentary that depicts Mr. Khanna as the true, and the only, superstar that Bollywood will ever have. May he rest in peace.
THIS IS CALLED SUPER STARDOM!!
The best part of the whole interview is Devi. She seems so ahead of her times.
First off, really it was shocking to hear Rajesh Khanna's death, i am in my early 30's and I am such a big fan of Rajesh Khanna. To see the above documentary was a great pleasure.
I could feel the royalness of Rajesh Khanna , how big the star he was.
Just one thing to say, STARS LIKE HIM ARE BORN ONCE IN A LIFE TIME..
GOD BLESS HIS SOUL...WE ALL WILL REALLY MISS HIM
wow.....this quite cool
loved the realism...the true pic of cinema behind the glam....
shashi kapoor soooo well spoken & charming..
Wow that's quite a rare and awesome find!
In part 7- you can see how Dimple was just a 15-16 year old, she was acting like a total teenager, cute! But cannot imagine what it's like for a 31 year old to be married to a 16 year old !
LOL, Rajesh Khanna's starry nakhras are amusing to watch. I wish Indian journalists reported honest ( yet tongue-in-cheek) manner like this.
The way he turned up over 2 hours late for the shooting and then the director made him wait until he apologized, haha, and then he was a no-show for 5 appointments with the BBC host - the excuse given by the watchman and the interviewer's reaction was so funny - that he was at an unknown hospital visiting an un-named friend for the next 13 hours, haha.
And that his house was like a shrine to himself, lol, no different from the rappers and biebers of today.
The way they talk about Dimple is so strange like she was an 15 yr old unknown bimbo , she married him at 15, holy cr@!.
Damn, he was about 31 during this documentary, so that means he peaked his stardom in his early 20s!! That must have been pretty cool, no wonder he found it hard to remain faithful with that many adoring fans, lol, at least he didn't bounce in and out of rehab, like hollywood superstars of his stature.
Shashi Kapoor was so handsome! and well spoken if not painfully patronising.
seen it a long time ago
