Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been sacked from Madhur Bhandarkar's "Heroine." Her crime? She got pregnant!

According to the media , Madhur planned to wrap up the film by the end of July and knowing that, Aishwarya gave the required dates to the project. When Ash's pregnancy was announced, she assured the director that she will complete the film no matter what, given that she is just in her 4th month of pregnancy and (given that a lot of other actresses have worked until their 7th month) can easily complete the film by the in the stipulated time. But she was rather shocked by the director's sudden bizarre demands.

The director's ridiculous demands after Aishwarya's pregnancy announcement
➔ To extend the schedule from 2 months to 6 months (which would definitely make it impossible for Aishwarya)
➔ To do two item songs (!!)
➔ To do a bathing scene under a waterfall (which she has never done in her entire career)
➔ To smoke on-screen

All of these above demands were made to Aishwarya only AFTER her pregnancy announcement... they were not mentioned when the director gave her a script reading.

And obviously Ash wouldn't agree to those ridiculous demands because motherhood is more important to her than any role, so he sacked her!

An official press release from UTV says - "Heroine has been put off indefinitely, considering Aishwarya's health" - Considering her health? She is just pregnant... that doesn't mean she is ill or handicapped! Are we still living in a male chauvinist society?

Will Aishwarya sue Madhur Bhandarkar?
"It has long been established that unfavourable treatment due to pregnancy is a form of gender discrimination. Ketan Gupta of LegalEye Associates says, "As per the constitution, discrimination on the basis of gender can invite legal action. However, this is subject to contractual terms and conditions agreed upon by both parties." Advocate Rahul V adds, "Generally in the glamour world, contracts stipulate that they can be terminated if the model/actor gets pregnant during the course of an assignment and is not deemed fit to deliver as per the requirements of her role. Most contracts also have a clause where the actor/model is supposed to be paid a certain compensation for the time invested in the project before it is terminated." In this particular case there is no contract between the actress and the production house, but Ash has shot for the film and wants to complete it. The filmmaker, however, is not relenting."

Will justice be done in Bollywood?
In 1996, Hollywood actress Hunter Tylo was cast in "Melrose Place." However, she was fired by the producer Aaron Spelling prior to filming, when she announced she was pregnant. The actress sued Spelling on grounds of discrimination for being pregnant and won $4.8 million from a Los Angeles jury. So can a similar judgement be expected in our Bollywood?

Currently, this is the hot topic. Heroine is trending on Twitter.

People who think it is okay to work during pregnancy is CRAZY and dont care about the child.

Unless it is something like office work, it is best to not work.

Aishwarya is not the kind of woman who will sue anyone for money. For her , her reputation, career, family is far more important. She hates making fuss of things and knows how indian media are nuts for her and create fabrications.

So i put my money on aishwarya not suing the director because it will provide unnecessary dramas, headache, political conflict, need for new laws.

Aishwarya will always play it safe as advised by amitabh batchan.

A pregnant actor can not do justice to "Heroine"

Just a day after Madhur Bhandarkar wrote a detailed blog about the shelving of his ambitious project Heroine following Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's pregnancy, the writer of the film Anuraadha Tewari express her views on the matter which seems to have been blown out of proportion. Here is what she has posted on her social networking profiles.
I think this one has to be the non debate of the century. I mean I can't believe it's become about gender discrimination – my first reaction was huh??

This is the VISUAL medium. Unlike any other profession, this is work where writers and directors 'visualize' things and break their backs trying to make it all real or believable or both. Am not even harping on glamour, am just saying believable. The character in 'Heroine' (since I have written it) CANNOT be pulled off by someone pregnant. It is as SIMPLE as that. Forget the physical strain and emotional stress and all that jazz, we can keep debating that ad nauseum . . . it simply does NOT fit into THIS role. This is a strictly adult film with mature content (no it's not porn). It's just bold in the visual and mature in what it's depicting.
Of course, people have gone on about it without knowing ANYTHING about the script. But surely knowing the kind of cinema the Director is known for, I can assure you it is NOT nice, even for an informed audience member like me to see a pregnant woman drink and smoke and snort coke and sleep with various people. I would cringe, seriously I would! Much like if I knew Malaika Arora was pregnant while doing Munni Badnaam (not before and after), or Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct . Or Hema Malini in Sholay as Basanti or Kareena Kapoor in We Are Family while the other actress in both the Films (Jaya and Kajol) was pregnant – cause it didn't get in the way of their roles . . . simple.
It is about creative liberty and NOT about desirability in Motherhood that it's suddenly been turned into. OF COURSE Malaika is hot even now, post motherhood. Most Hollywood actresses are! What's sex appeal got to do with Motherhood anyways??? Rani isn't considered hot without being married or a mother, Malaika is hot with both . . . so??? Am just amazed that we have such short attention spans that anything that is said in a high pitch with authority becomes the truth . . . I mean really!!!
As for the contentious pregnancy clause... well, I am personally all for it. Because it's a CLAUSE not a LAW! No one is saying that there should be a law stating that no actress can ever be a Mother. It is a clause that may be needed in a certain Film. I think that should be left to the Producers as well as the actress. Actors include clauses of their own (some of them would really kill you!) so why not one from the makers' side. The actress can REFUSE if she doesn't find it important or applicable or offensive or whatever. She has a Choice. But here is what the clause protects – not just the Producers' money but the hard work of an ENTIRE unit. People seem to be forgetting that altogether! Like in the case of 'Heroine' where because of the actress not fitting into the role anymore, the Film gets plugged and at least a 100 technicians find themselves jobless. All of us employed for the next 6 months (not writers but the others) are suddenly without work and NO MONEY!!! (Even writers are only paid about 50% before shoot). So the situation is not just responsible for the Makers. It is so for the ENTIRE unit – the true victims of the case.
Having said all of this, and in no mood to mud sling and as the only woman on the team I must state that I am quite CONVINCED that the intention of the Actress was NOT to be unfair or dishonest. I personally think (and have said so earlier) she was genuinely warm and receptive and TRULY CARED for the script. However, my sense is that she was caught in a personal situation – a very tricky one at that and perhaps hoped that it would all work out in the end, especially, since I have no doubts on her dedication and sincerity to the Film. My feeling is that it sort of got baldy handled from the announcement onwards. Even after that things could have been sorted from both ends and, knowing the Director, if sorted amicably, there is no DOUBT in my head that he would have waited for her to return.

What saddened and intensely angered me were the planted stories thereafter (I must congratulate the PR though . . . it's a great job done, seriously!) to try and fudge and confuse the issue and getting gender into it. But am over that now... past the anger and past the frustration of watching 4 months of hard work, sleepless nights and missing life for a script DESIGNED for someone to go down the drain overnight. Knowing that my market value itself will suffer because of a shelved project . . . I am done with that and moved on and let go.
In this business, and otherwise, the only thing one can be is being true to one's craft and retain one's integrity and keep up the passion no matter what. Hopefully we have all done that and now let go knowing the Universe will do the right thing... do the needful. Like it always does :)

If she's not already, she should sue him.

she probably knew about it the day she was pregoo. you have to pee on the stick.. that is it.

Anonymous's picture

why the greed ash? You have enough money, there was no need to get that 4-5 crores extra.. you could have sustained without it.. why did you have to make a director and production company lose 6 crores with your greed??

Anonymous's picture

r u mad?!!! i wonder why the lady is playing from behind... if she wanted why doesn't she come out and raise her voice... disgusting

Anonymous's picture

its ok if ash dont want to tell about her pregnancy....its her wish....but then y she signed the movie????....she can simply refuse the movie....she is playing the character of a heroine in the movie....she needs to look fit....she is not playing a widow or a mom like Jaya(sholy) and kajol(WE are family) ...where fitness doesnt matter...

Anonymous's picture

she showed a new LOW of hers by singing movie like HEROINE being pregnant and knowing that at 37-38 it is very risky !

Anonymous's picture

Oh Pleeeeeeeeeease !! you miss ur period and you know your pregnant,, but u cant let go maney, fame and glamour that easily,, Both MB And mrs bachan ,,are no innocent..

Anonymous's picture

@kitty
rani was good in black? rani has been good in all her films even if the said films didn't do well at the box office (source: critic reviews of most of her movies in the past 7-8 years), she has also carried several films on her shoulders exclusively unlike other actresses who only work fairly okay with a handful of directors. A good actor rises above the flaws in the script and direction, an average actor needs the whole package to work so they can work.

@ Shmuck i just love ur comment... thank a lot...

In case you guys dunno, you get to know wen ur pregnant mid 4 monthd maybe she did not notice guys!

From all the articles I read until now, I come to this conclusion that: Ash was willing to complete it before the bump showed. The director was not ready for that because he was not well-planned to finish the film in 45 days and he wanted more time. Who is to be blamed for this? Why should Ash tell about her pregnancy to him? It's her personal business. It would not have affected anybody had Madhur stuck to the original plan of wrapping it up in 45 days. But looks like he was not professional enough in sticking to his plans. He was rather unorganzied.

There are so many actress who worked during their pregnancies, playing roles which didn't require them to be pregnant... that's called camera angles and tricks. Madhur never heard of such things? Weird.

Anonymous's picture

I hate madhur Bh anyways , he may be an average film maker but in his public appearances and interviews he comes across like a complete jerk ,, ( chek out some of his pics pouting) yukk ,, but in this Case even mrs bachan is to be blamed , she is no saint but is a lair if she's saying that when she signed the film or during Cannes , she was unaware of her pregnancy. She shouldn't have kept the filmmakers in dark ,, but I guess the greed for fame and money is greater than anything for these guys

Anonymous's picture

madhur should sue aishwarya. . the headline shud be ulta. . amitabh is acting as if she is pregnant from him.. gosh the most fake family in the whole world. suits aishwarya well

Are you kidding me... pff... another reason not to watch indian movies.

Anonymous's picture

ash....more power to you!!! you are on the RIGHT here! whereas MCPs like Ronnie Screwwala (he shud be screwed) and Madhur should be lynched in public!

cmys001's picture

Ok, we need to look at this from both sides. Ash is totally right if she goes on to sue MB.

Having said that we need to look at his side too. He is an awesome film maker and his movies have an authentic feel to them and this is a movie about Heroins.. and he has to protray what real heroines do in Bollywood. So this may mean that Ash has to smoke and do scenes and etc.

It was unfair of MB not to mention these in the contract at the same time it was extremely unprofessional for Ash not to adv MB that she is pregnant.

They are both at fault, Ash more because she is the employee and she has to disclose anythign that may hinder her performance.

What about when she has to be work long hours and she is preganant, she will obviously need more breaks and more attention. this fully jepordises her performance. not saying that she is a bad actor or that she is a bad mum. But, she will have hormones and she will be moody. and this is not good for her or the baby.

She should have been professional and disclosed to MB that she will either do the film later on or she will not be able to do it at all.

@ Shmuck... OK I should have said "allegedly" :) Sorryyyy!

@ critic... Hmmm, well I was not talking about acting at all, but popularity/marketability (as per what barbie girl was speaking of with her "poll")... acting wise Rani was good in Black... no doubt... and I see that we agree on the marketable angle, so I guess we have no disagreement here! :)

@ BOLLYWOOD...Oh, OK... so I guess if the same person had called Madhur "ingenious" in one breath and "moron" in another that would have been funny wouldn't it? Haha... I could not find these hilarious comments though, LOL... but in that mystery "exposed hypocrite's" defense, isn't it possible for a gifted director to do a dumb thing? They aren't gods after all... just humans like you & me! ;) Everyone can make good & bad decisions!

@ phoenixrising... if you are just coming here to look at the pretty pictures and you don't feel like contributing to any conversation, that's your choice. Just ignore my comments, and don't drag me into yours. Simple.

phoenixrising's picture

Schmuck - seriously, you still want to continue the fighting here?

Guys, are these celebs going to share their profits with you :| ?

I still don't understand people on this forum!

Schmuck's picture

@BOLLYWOOD - Sorry, but the entire world knows it was a supporting role. You can still defend your favourite. WHATEVER. I don't care. Sorry, but Guzaarish had a smaller release than NOKJ... believe it or not.. with 700 screens. NOKJ was on 1200. In spite of that Guzaarish made more... and the fact that Guzaarish took 60 crore to be made (6 times more than NOKJ) - that cost it dearly. No, one is denying that NOKJ was a success. And with Reema Katgi's film, even if she is just there like standing, she will benefit because it is an Aamir Khan film - like any actress will! She can give her arm for Khans. Oh you have a feeling that it will make more money than all of Ash's hit films put together? I can't really get into doing math - HAHAHA, but good luck. :P

None of u children below have been pregnant otherwise you would know you never tell anyone you are pregnant when you are less than 3 months as the rate of miscarriage in most women is the highest then.

Anonymous's picture

holy crap...some of u really need to get a life...writing a page long comment....REAlly? how does this affect ur life....

phoenixrising's picture

Why do you all get so obsessed with some celeb? What do you get in return? Why do you defend celebs or come to their support? I find it hard to understand you people...why do you behave as if celebs are uniquely sent to earth from heaven? You are as good as any celeb, they do their work and so do you. Since they are entertainers, they get a lot of coverage about every activity of theirs. But are you people so insecure in lives that you glorify these celebs and keep checking on them and defending everything said about them? I think criticism at the least is understandable, but foul mouthing is also sick and you bash up as an excuse for envy...at least it appears so!

So users like sujata, kitty and many more, what do you get by doing this "protect my fav celeb" work?

Someone would reply to this post attacking me, so I will answer for myself before posting this comment. I use pinkvilla to check out how celebs look like, about movies, gossips etc. I would never waste my energy protecting some random celeb who means nothing to me nor would I bash up some celeb because they got something more than what they deserved. Don't you guys also get many such things? A promotion, a beautiful family, good education, all the freedom in the world you want etc...these celebs live miserable lives! It is the early glitter in their lives that fades away when they reach 30s...for both the genders! Not just women. They have too much pressure and can't even enjoy as they wish with all the money they have!

I don't understand why you should support/defend/glorify them. Finally, you all end up fighting with each other...commenting is great, but your comment should be your own thoughts and not a reply to some other user who has posted here.

Admiration and glorification are totally different words. Criticism and bashing too! Love and hate is fine, but don't spend energy for celebs who mean nothing to you. Your life is more beautiful :)

BOLLYWOOD's picture

@Schmuck.....YAWN...and once more YAAAAAAAAWWNNN!!!
i have never read anything more stupid. In the first place i never CLAIMED that NOKJ was a HIT!! I said it was a success..i hope you know the difference..Rani played a side role???? Do you really wish to be taken seriously??hahaha..The movie no doubt was about Jessica's sister but Rani clearly got the crowd in... Ravaan/Guzarish?ActionReplay all had very wide release unlike NOKJ so its obvious that they would garner more. And don't forget Guzarish/AR both had HR and Akki who were the more dominant pull factor. And about Ash's upcoming movies...ill believe them only when they release :D lol
Ofcourse Rani is not the superstar she once was.. who's denying that? She has done some of the most atrocious films and thats why the lack of faith people showed. but with NOKJ and now Reema Lagti's movie she will once again prove her worth. I have a feeling that this film will collect more than all of ash's HIT films put together :D :D :D

Ash should ask herself at age 37 and having her first child what is more important to her, the well being
of her child or the movie Heroine, which is base on Marilyn Monroe.
She is lucky, unlike the many women who have to work way into their pregnancy without any comfort
or luxury. Enjoy life, its just a movie.
