Here is the synopsis:

STUDENT OF THE YEAR

The road from youth to adulthood is paved with myriad emotions and Student Of The Year celebrates this colorful coming of age. It is the story of Abhimanyu Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) and Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) who traverse the path of competition, envy, triumph, failure, manipulation and heartbreak in their mini-universe of St. Teresa’s High School, Dehradun. Abhimanyu Singh a.k.a Abhi comes from a middle-class family and wants to achieve great heights of success and prosperity, the first step to which will be the Student of the Year trophy while Rohan Nanda a.k.a Ro, is the son of a business tycoon who grapples with a complex relationship with his father and knows that winning the Student Of the Year trophy will bag him the approval that he subconsciously craves for. When the two protagonists with distinct backgrounds and clear goals clash with each other in the locker room, football field and the canteen, there is no question in anyone’s mind that the preset equations of the St.T’s campus were about to change.

When Abhi and Rohan’s rivalry takes an unexpected turn to friendship, neither pre-empts the complications that would brew. Things are further knotted up when Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt), the most popular girl on the campus enters the equation. While Shanaya and Rohan are childhood sweethearts, Abhi’s attraction for his best friend’s girlfriend and Shanaya’s quiet reciprocation causes a rift in their friendship that would have a long lasting impact. Looming large over the various friendships in the campus is the Student Of The year trophy and Dean Yogendra Vasisht’s (Rishi Kapoor) emphasis on success and victory. Towards the end of the term, the foes-turned-friends-turned foes, Abhi and Rohan, are ready for a face-off and battle lines are drawn through the length and breadth of the campus, with only one goal in everyone’s eyes --– Student Of The Year Trophy. As new ambitions are born and old loyalties fall by the wayside, each segment of the Student Of The Year competition manages to tear apart both, the participants and the spectators, to redefine the choices of the three protagonists.

What will Abhimanyu choose? Victory or Friendship?
What will Rohan choose? Victory or Dreams?
What will Shanaya choose? Victory or Emotions?

The trailer may not be the best but it looks a bit intresting... afterall this is a Karan Johar film and to me he's one of the best filmmakers in India. So just because the trailer wasn't that good, doesn't mean the movie isn't....
Its right that no school like this exist in india. But today's generation is growing very fast..I think they are understanding n doing too much than required at their age... to fall in love with someone in school/college life and then kiss n all that things Oh its normal yaar...
Well the boys look handsome and The girl is cute... :) Yeah Really! i like Alia... She hot and kiss scene at the age of 18, Oh girl! i think u will beat ur sister Pooja Bhatt :p

Now hope the story, direction, screenplay lives upto the expectation... Music is good so the expectations for the music is HIGH...
SOTY will be a Hit or Flop? All will depend on the script and screen play... So let's see what's gonna happen !!! ;-)

the guys look SUPER DUPER HOT !!!

Trailer is OK ... The music seems good though.. Vishal-Shekhar rock!

Predictable story at best. So basically this movie is about the two boys becoming close friends and then enemies. One question, why isn't the girl fighting to win the student of the year cup. It will be nice if at the end she/a third party wins like an underdog. Trailers crap but I will still give it one shot.

Bad Version Of Already Bad High School Musical :O & Aliya Bhatt Yuckkkkkk !!!!!!!

karan johar has failed already. if the trailer is this boring, imagine how the film would be! i already don't feel for the characters - a director's failure is when he cannot make his audience empathise with his characters...how can we when his characters are so superficial and fake like this?!

moimeme's picture

Alia looks like a little sister to these boys!

I thought by now Karan movies will be more mature but I guess I was delusional .karan should be grateful to shahrukh, because let face it, all the credit and glory Karan took was because of him. shahrukh is the one who made Karan movies likeable and made numerous changes in has stupid scenarios . Otherwise it going to look just like this crap student of the year

Karan seems to have forgot that it was SRK's presence, that added attraction to his movies and ensured maximum crowds walking into the theaters....nobody will go and watch newcomers that too a school/college theme that's so often recycled....it wont stand a chance at the box office...this is so 90's theme...

Wow. Alia looks nothing like a HEROINE. The guys are hot though, I'll give them that.

Anonymous's picture

why are people saying that the college is not realistic..offcourse its not coz its a movie not real world..and the trailer is not that bad! GUYS ARE HOT

Dessigaal's picture

please KJO make realistic movies sometime yaar!!
this trailer is bad..and its going to another kuch kuch hota hain!! or cocktail!

Anonymous's picture

anyone but Alia Bhatt.. the guys are ok.. not bad...

Anonymous's picture

Stuck in the 90's...... When are we desi's going to grow up. Movies in the 70's had better stories than this crap.

Anonymous's picture

Alia will suit a MIDDLE SCHOOL girl, not high school. And the guys??? WAY older than high school ! What were the casting people thinking? The movie can be fine, but this discrepancy in looks is distracting. And I surely don't wanna see a tween girl romancing like an adult. I do find one of the guys really attractive-way more than the other.

Anonymous's picture

Boys look like mannequins. Boring.

Anonymous's picture

WOW nothing i mean not a bit of the trailer looks interesting....except directed by karan johar..wait not even thaaat.....

Anonymous's picture

I haven't yet watched the trailor but going by that poster, it looks completely wrong seeing how the girl looks like a child for gods sake.

Trailer wasn't THAT bad but wasn't that great either IMO. Definitely cliched stuff, old whine in a new bottle... the girl looks like she's just a prop, only to shake her pompoms. The synopsis asks "What will Shanaya choose? Victory or Emotions?"... so what's that supposed to mean? That she can't decide if she should romance the one she likes, or the one who wins the stupid trophy? They totally made her sound one dimensional! Nice going Karan!

And YES the guys do look too much alike, and overall they seem so wooden. Compare that to Lucky and Sanjana from Main Hoon Na... now those are some cute and memorable student characters! And yeah all those rippling muscles did seem like they should be on OLDER characters... JMO.

As for the KANK debate, my 2 cents is that even though I love most of the actors in KANK, I have to say it was a bad movie, SRK's second worst IMO (after Yeh Lamhe Judai Ke). Not because of the infidelity theme but because of the weak plot, I mean it was such a letdown in the second half.

i think the songs are gonna be awesome!

WOW! Sidharth is pretty hot!

@Mystic Rose
THANK YOU! you took the words right out of my mouth.that is exactly why I couldn't like KANK,so many cliches and it tried too hard but it was not believable in my opinion.

Trailer does not look impressive at all ...expected it to be better as it was kjo's film but second thought he's never made a film that looks or sounds boring....whether it did well or not all his films are good so im gonna go and watch this might just turn out better than expected as it also stars srk and kajol in cameo plus its srk's film ...has to be good

Anonymous's picture

she has very bright orange lipstick

Anonymous's picture

hahaha what a cheesy story

Anonymous's picture

Wow, it seems Alia is just another Poo, the most awful character to come out of a Bollywood film. You cannot compare it to Harry Potter, the female lead, Hermione, was very smart and not a trophy to be won.

Anonymous's picture

why repeat the pooh character with alia bhatt again?? do something different...karan??

Thanks Mystic Rose xx :)

This seems very superficial, unrealistic and not original. I thought Karan was moving into a more mature phase of cinema, but he's coming up with the same romcoms that we have all seen a million times. Bollywood has changed people are more aware and mature with their film choices. This will strictly be a one watch wonder. I'm not hopeful about their acting talent, in the trailer their dialogue delivery was awful! Not expecting fireworks. Very disappointed!
