Here is the synopsis:

STUDENT OF THE YEAR

The road from youth to adulthood is paved with myriad emotions and Student Of The Year celebrates this colorful coming of age. It is the story of Abhimanyu Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) and Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) who traverse the path of competition, envy, triumph, failure, manipulation and heartbreak in their mini-universe of St. Teresa’s High School, Dehradun. Abhimanyu Singh a.k.a Abhi comes from a middle-class family and wants to achieve great heights of success and prosperity, the first step to which will be the Student of the Year trophy while Rohan Nanda a.k.a Ro, is the son of a business tycoon who grapples with a complex relationship with his father and knows that winning the Student Of the Year trophy will bag him the approval that he subconsciously craves for. When the two protagonists with distinct backgrounds and clear goals clash with each other in the locker room, football field and the canteen, there is no question in anyone’s mind that the preset equations of the St.T’s campus were about to change.

When Abhi and Rohan’s rivalry takes an unexpected turn to friendship, neither pre-empts the complications that would brew. Things are further knotted up when Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt), the most popular girl on the campus enters the equation. While Shanaya and Rohan are childhood sweethearts, Abhi’s attraction for his best friend’s girlfriend and Shanaya’s quiet reciprocation causes a rift in their friendship that would have a long lasting impact. Looming large over the various friendships in the campus is the Student Of The year trophy and Dean Yogendra Vasisht’s (Rishi Kapoor) emphasis on success and victory. Towards the end of the term, the foes-turned-friends-turned foes, Abhi and Rohan, are ready for a face-off and battle lines are drawn through the length and breadth of the campus, with only one goal in everyone’s eyes --– Student Of The Year Trophy. As new ambitions are born and old loyalties fall by the wayside, each segment of the Student Of The Year competition manages to tear apart both, the participants and the spectators, to redefine the choices of the three protagonists.

What will Abhimanyu choose? Victory or Friendship?
What will Rohan choose? Victory or Dreams?
What will Shanaya choose? Victory or Emotions?

What the hell was this? I loathe Karan johar movies except Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.... All of his movies elude false and over the top so called 'Indian values' I coudn't even watch the whole of KKKG... The so called Indian values his movies preach creates a delusional image of Indian culture.. I mean which mother cries and runs to the stage when her child recites Vande Mataram? lol
Is that girl Mahesh Bhatts daughter? Normal looks.. Mahesh Bhatt is disgusting,He had mouth kissed his own daughter Pooja Bhatt in the early 90s...

It wud have been more convincing if these meaty boys were in university not in high Skool..does Karan Johar know the average age and physique of a high Skool kid...

@Deepika-Fan, i agree that KANK is far from karan's finest. and no, as I said it was a sad ending. I wasn't happy when Srk and Rani ended up together. But I viewed it as Karan's attempt of sort sort to at realism. I'm sure infidelity is becoming more common in the urban areas of India as well as, I know it's becoming quite common amongst 2nd gen desis in the west. This is what I think he was aiming at.

@Nabby H it had so many weak points, the main characters weren't even likable and you didn't feel happy when SRK and rani ended up together.rani was whiny,SRK was rude, you never understood why rani would dump someone sweet like abhi for SRK,it had so many plot holes, and there were so many unnecessary stuff in the movie which made it too long, like the "black beast" was that needed? it has NOTHING to do that the movie was about infidelity, trust me.It was just a bad movie,in my opinion.karan's worst.
....immature opinion. So in your point you can't fall in locpve with someone who has weakness and not special as a human being. And if someone is sweet you have be in love with him. Clearly you have no idea about the heart matters. The film is so deep and complex in its structure and being done in a stylised fashion wasn't bad as grab more eyeballs in the west. That's why I guess the film did extremely fantastic worldwide rather than in his own home country. Foreign audience are way more mature than the Indians. Thats why films like asoka, dil Se, paheli, Swades did great business worldwide.

This looks like a mixture of KKHH/Jo Jeeta wahi sikander and all the other normal college rom coms! Aliaa looks way too young to be dressed up an glamorized like that. Maybe she should have waited another 2 years to mature up a bit!
This movie will only do well because it is a K JO movie!

K Jo had so much fun making the movie...he almost kept both the heroes in swimming pool only so as to keep them in their underwears!

BORING.......THE HOLE THINg lacks soul....the guys are pretty and it looks like a commercial thats about it....neil and nikki 2,

Anonymous's picture

I loved KANK guys ,what is your problem

Anonymous's picture

Wow, this looks like it should have come out in 1999! What was Karan thinking?

Anonymous's picture

looks like american movies about teenagers, will succeed I am sure ,and is this the girl who was in kuch kuch hota hai,I read she will be in it

Nabby H's picture

@Deepika-fan I didn't think KANK was a bad movie. Yeah the plot was not well-received by the desi populatiomn at the time (Bollywood was just starting to come out massively with such stories). Cocktail perhaps would've failed at the time too given the plot. And yeah, KANK was a wee bit long but I didn't think it was a terrible movie. It just was an unpopular plot. Don't you think so?

Anonymous's picture

What a disappointment!!!

Anonymous's picture

I think the story goes to two boys and Alia is just a show piece.

Anonymous's picture

karan johar has a knack for picking CUTE ASS BOYS

DeepikaFan's picture

I was so excited for this, but now that I see the trailer meeeh it looks bad,to be honest.
@Nabby H did you already forget about KANK? *shudder*

Anonymous's picture

both the guys look so similar in alot of the sceens I couldn't tell which one is which, the typical model look.
It looks colourful but thats it, girl looks boring. I will watch it for the songs I think.

Anonymous's picture

OMG <3 It looks glossy and superficial and silly and a lot of fun!

Judging by Alia Bhatt's (lack thereof) performance and her not getting one single line in the promo despite being the solo female lead suggests to me she did by and far get this role due to her connections. Having said that at least she looks like a high schooler.

I have a long list of problems with this trailer and almost nothing to redeem it.

Yash Chopra has a very very special quality of moving with the times and being in touch with the romantic notions of the youth. Hence his year on out success. I think this movie will prove Kjo does not have the same touch.

If he thinks setting a movie in a highschool with a LITERAL competition for 'student of the yr' (i honestly though that was a promo gimmick. not the actual story line) it shows only that he's been out of school for a long time. No such contest exists, even in the day and age of reality competitions, because it doesn't make sense.

Now we're going to have heros who can swim and run fast as well as study? i have enough of those at my college thank you.

Is it just me or do the 2 boys look eerily similiar, with one just being slightly taller than the other. having a hard time distinguishing them. whats the bet that ones the nerdy one and ones the jock??

And is Siddharth Malhotra getting prominence in all the promotions?

How can Kjo have gone from My Name is Khan to this. So disappointed.

Anonymous's picture

Alia Bhatt looks great!

ZENNY's picture

...what craaap!!!!
just one thing is good in this trailer...Sid Malhotra's voice...HOT!!!
But let's wait and see some more promos...this one for me is a NO NO!! I was so excited that there was going to be a KJo movie on my birthday...but my all my excitement gaye paani lene!

Anonymous's picture

Whatever!

Anonymous's picture

yawn...something amiss

Anonymous's picture

looks so stupid.. the girl is not hot at all and is trying too hard to look like priyanka chopra.

Anonymous's picture

Good looking people in a bad boring movie of a love triangle.... When is Bollywood going to wake up and start making meaningful movies......?

Anonymous's picture

There doesn't look like there's that much story here, but I must say cinematography wise it did keep me riveted. Alia Bhatt looks absolutely effervescent the way she's been filmed here too. Whatever you have to say about nepotism, this new generation does seem more hungry and hardworking for stardom and to leave a mark than ever before. I guess it's more clear now that a star family can get you in, but can't get you on top. You have to set yourself apart somehow.

The same ol' same ol' from ol' Karan! A pastiche of the typical Dharma drama scenes, put together to resemble a "new" movie. All three female leads look slightly pretty but quite wooden and unremarkable. All three have been plucked, stretched, toned, smoothened, buffed and made up beyond the normal limits! However, even as I type this I know the movie will sell...since SOME people WILL watch ANYthing and KJo and SRK will go laughing all the way to the back, yet again. P.S. I must admit that the Dhawan kid (assuming he's the shorter one?) does seem to have some redeeming qualities but only a full viewing of the movie will convince me.
