'Lost out on a role because director felt I was not beautiful enough' - Anushka
In an interview to Indian Express , Anushka Sharma spills the beans on her career, rumors surrounding her anorexia and how she lost out on a role because the director felt she was not "stunningly beautiful". I have only added the interesting bits here. Please read the remainder of the interview in the link provided. It's a good read. I personally find Anushka quite pretty and I like her onscreen. How about you? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Yash Chopra film’s press release says that the film stars Shah Rukh Khan with the “very beautiful” Katrina Kaif and the “very talented” Anushka Sharma. Does that take off the pressure to look good or put on the pressure to act well? (Laughs) I didn’t know how to react when I read that. I didn’t know whether I should be happy that I’m talented or be sad that I’m not beautiful. I remember having this conversation with my father. I guess I’ll have to find solace in Adi’s words who told me, “We chose you because you can act and that beauty is not your USP.” If you have to compare us, Katrina is definitely more beautiful. Being beautiful is important for films since it is a visual medium but the women I love have been such stellar performers that it adds to their beauty, like, Nargisji, Kajol, Rani Mukerji. Ever lost out on a role because someone said you’re not beautiful enough? Yes. I’ve met directors who said they were looking for an actress who is “stunningly beautiful” and that I didn’t look the part. It happened before BBB. The perception about you is that you are very aloof. Has that gone against you? I can’t hardsell myself. Mujhe sharam aati hai. I have a major pride issue. I feel if I’m good, you’ll see it and give me what is due to me. People mistake this for arrogance. It’s just that I’m proud of my talent, not of my stardom. With BBB, my talent got validated. I’ve decided to become selective about my work. I’ll do one thing at a time and cater to the audience that has welcomed me. I don’t think actors should have images. I don’t think I need a PR to survive this industry

I think that deepika looks better than anushka.Well most of them say that anushkas jodi looks good tha deepika. But I think so that deepika looks more better than anushka and she suits to all actors in bollywood and also with yuvi.
It's so stupid how Bollywood thinks that if a woman is very beautiful, and totally talent-less, she becomes a hit. And if she's talented, and not beautiful, she's not famous. Wtf? Katrina can barely speak hindi, and she's famous. Wow.
I find her pretty, especially in Rab Ne Bana di Jodi, but seriously the actresses today none of them are truly anything special.
Regarding, Wed, 2011-12-14 06:57 — Anonymous--> this sounds like a Miss India USA pagent, where a loser a few years back bombarded the sites with 'problem of the 'shorties' entering pagents. Her comments are on rediff if you care to google. Apparently, a lot of short people are welcomed in these pagents (having very beautiful faces)-- and this made her feel that the better ones (taller) had a harder time getting in top spots.
If you want to believe tall, fair and thin is India's bill of beauty-that's fine. But let others have their own bill of beauty, and that includes Indians. There are going to be voluptuous, slim, tall, petite,dark,light, curly hair, straight hair, and and sorts of people in Bollywood - and that's a good thing-- because India's bill of beauty is and should be diverse. Whether it's really happening or not (diversity) is debatable. As for Anuskha, she's getting top heroine roles already.. not working her way up like Bips or Pri. Not sure why you don't think she's not welcomed.. she's doing much much better than an arguably tall , thin, fit, nice haired, and incredibly beautiful face + incredible talent like Nandita Das , etc-- who does happen to be dusky-- and struggled and struggled. (by the way, she too lost out on roles not fitting in as beautiful due to her color).
And oh, by the way, Hollywood is filled with diverse faces-- not just exceptionally beautiful ones. The simple next door Reese Witherspoon go hand in hand with standard stunners like Theron. Blondes, brunettes, redheads, and and all sorts of races and colors. Wish Bollywood would follow the diverse lead.

Hypocrite much? First you claim what is healthy and unhealty, but in a world of eating disorders, you call people chubby? Yes, Bollywood welcomes voluptous and thin actresses... as for dusky (that's debatable). Most dusky artists start off either as character actresses depsite being very beautiful (i.e Nandita).. or as vamps (Bips/Pri) and have to pancake lightened to be 'welcomed', as you say.
It's very ignorant of you to call people chubby , stdout, etc... and then counter what is healthy and unhealthy.
By the way, the industry has seen successful tall , fair and having nice hair actresses (your ideal): Pooja Batra (nearly 6 feet tall) ; Sonali Bendre-- having incredibly beautiful faces.
there should be room for all and everyone should respect diverse opinions and tastes== and obviously Ansushka has her share of people who find her attractive-- otherwise, she would be playing vamp roles at the start of her career the way dusky Priyanka did (working her way up). She's obviously getting heroine roles- so she is fitting in some way.
IF YOU LOOK DOWN ON 'STOUT' , CHUBBY OR DUSKY AS LESSER, OBVIOUSLY, YOU ARE MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE AS THE ONES YOU POINT THE FINGER TO.
I find it extraordinary unhealthy that a woman that looks like Anuskha is being labelled not beautiful.
If this is reflective of Indian mentality in the 21st c, then Indian has become way more westernised than I had thought.
She is lithe, thin (when not too thin, athletic) she is fair, her hair is lovely, she dresses well.
And yet, ppl seem to keep on reiterating TO HER FACE that she is not beautiful enough???
This is in the same industry where actresses that did not fit India's own bill of beauty have been welcomed, dusky actresses, short actresses, stout or even chubby actresses.

1. if you are talented AND beautiful you will always be remembered ie madhuri, rani, waheeda rehman.
2. if you are beautiful ONLY you will be remembered to an extent..twinkle, lisa ray, malaika sherawat, malaika khan

well, many people find her attractive and many do not. that's why to each is own.. and there should be diversity in Bollywood- not labels. obviously reading the posts, a lot of people are finding her attractive. everyone should have their own tastes.

I dont know why she thinks she is not pretty.She is gorgeous. she hasnt got any plastic surgeries,boob jobs or lip jobs done like katrina or others. Looks like ppl no longer appreciate natural beauty this world anymore..everything cannot be perfect.She is an inspiration for girls like me,
Like Sonam her still face in pictures is quite plain, especially the lower half. She has a flat face. BUT she was lovely on screen in Rab ne and BBB. See screen beauty and photo beauty are two different things. Some beautiful girls can bore you aishwarya in action Replay for example. Imagine if Sridevi did that comic role! While some plain girls can fascinate you on screen thanks to their personality... Penelope cruz is a great example. She is a pretty enough latina in pictures but on screen she is a stunning goddess thanks to her personality, voice, acting
And it is too early dear to say that you are talented. You have a long way to go to prove that. All the films you did are not a proof of an exceptional talent still. And thats a fact this women need to consider before talking.

his is why indians r the worst people in the world,who tells someone you r not beautifull.suicide rate is high.i think shes very beautifull.and indians look down on people thats why kajol have 6 filmfares becouse they dont give other people a chance.in hollywood u don t have to have someone in the industry to make.this unacceptable
beauty comes in all different shapes, colors and sizes... and if Anuskha thinks she's beautiful, she should believe in herself. there are always people who find some people attractive and others not... there are always people labeliing stars as average looking , etc. whatever, don't let labels get to you. Anususkha may be not our concept of good-looking, but she is someone else's concept... to each is own. beauty is subjective.
by the way, every model and actress has to deal with rejection and there is always someone who finds you pretty and someone you will not . that's how it all works for everyone.. not just Anuska.

I think she has the wholesome fresh looks thing going for her rather than classic beauty.But not many of today's actresses are conventionally beautiful.Especially in comparision to the early lot who were simply perfect....Madhubala, Hema Malini ,Waheeda Rehman etc etc.
