Flashback: India's original supermodels
Not too long ago, before Bollywood stars took over the ramp decked out in their jewels and designer duds, India had bonafide supermodels. Their looks and talent were on par with the Cindy Crawfords and Christy Turlingtons of the US (for us 90s girls who still remember those days!). Many of them still work as models today, but suffice it to say the public's attention is much more heavily placed on the Bollywood "show stoppers." However, fashion shows can't happen without REAL fashion models. They deserve a lot more credit than they get. So, here's a look back at some of the best of our time. Who were your favorites? India is the only place where an "average looking white girl" becomes a "supermodel"--- lol @ how the ACTUAL SUPERMODELS look vs. PLUMB average western girl Katrina, she has made a mockery out of this, and we have only the indians to thank who go gaga-over-white-skin. SO THANKS.

SERIOUSLY ... what happened?!? These were the original super models. I was lucky to meet Madhu Sapre, Noyonika Chatterjee, and Mehr Jessia in person. They def don't make 'em like this anymore

some of the other super models you missed are - Madhu Sapre, Meghna reddy, Vidisha Pavate.....they all went ahead to prove themselves globally as well....and another one on the list should be Ash Rai......many people only consider her as a bollywood phenomena .......truth is she was one of the most sought after models (even before Miss India and Miss World happened)......and please I am not some deluded fan of her, I am just stating the fact.Like someone rightfully pointed below she was working for some big names even back then. She is never on the list of supermodels because she created a bigger name for herself as a bollywood actor , infact everyone expected her to win the Miss India that year....because frankly no one thought she had competition!!! But we all know how a underdog called Sushmita Sen came from nowhere, beat Miss Rai and surprised everyone.
I always wondered why katrina kaif was hired to walk by these big designers..I mean look at how incredibly toned and slim the other models are and Look at katrina..she was visibly very heavy back then and shapeless to say the least..Did she have "personal" relations with these designers.

I always admired Indrani Das Gupta and Sheetal Mallar ... and still do..... True beauties with perfect features and body for modeling.

aishwarya was also super model. she was a face of lakme for long time andshe worked big designer like hemant trivedi and ritu kumar and she did commercial for pepsi with aamir and palmolive soap. and besides there also other big super model like indrani dasgupta, jesse randhawa and mehr bhasin

How come Aishwarya Rai is missing? Ash has had one of the most successful modelling careers! Not till date, has a model come close to replicating that kinda success. Besides ramp shows, (which she did nonchanlantly), she also had some amazing ad campaigns. No other model of the time, had full-fleged campaigns, like the way she did. Her stuffs were huge. She was the face of big brands like Lakme, Phillips, Micra, Palmolive, Colgate, Pepsi, etc ... all had multiple TVCs, print ads, hoardings, etc ... She was a star even before she became Miss India/Miss World.
I'm not a Katrina fan, but I think some of you are misplacing your rage about Katrina's weaknesses as an actress on to this post. Nowhere did it say that Katrina specifically was comprable to Cindy Crawford. What I meant was, in India THESE women were our Cindy Crawfords and Christy Turlingtons. Katrina was considerably the newest, youngest one of the group, but if she stuck to modeling and never became an actress I think she would have improved and slowly risen to the top. Just like she did in Bollywood.

supermodels == super skin show. Ash has done skin show, but not super skin show, so she was just a model, not super model not in this list

Yeh right Katrina is on par with Cindy Crawford ha ha ha!!! Don't be rediculous, Cindy is an international fashion icon, she created hystory as a model, she was a muse for world's top designers...how can you put Kat's name next to her?? Kat can't model to save her life, she has one pose and one expression on every single photo, she's the most boring model in the world, she came to india coz all western modeling agencies rejected her. So pls don't insult Cindy!!
