Successful Bollywood Actors (Male) with Unconventional Looks
Many of you might say that either a person is good looking or they are not. But just as we say the "grey" areas of life, when it comes to the looks of a person we term it "unconventional". Unconventional for me would be somebody who is not the "drop dead gorgeous" yet has the charm that attracts people. And the Bollywood brigade is no different. Some of the most successful actors are the extremely unconventional in the looks department. Topping the list would be Amitabh Bachchan. In his earlier days, he was considered too lean and not actor material. (A little trivia: He was also rejected in the All India Radio because they felt his voice wasn't good enough!) He definitely did not have kind of looks that would make you say,"wow". He still doesn't though. But thankfully for him, he played characters like Vijay Dheenanath Chauhan & Shehenshah, that were etched into the audiences memory forever, earning him the tag of the "angry young man". From there on, there was no looking back. Though I am going to get a lot flak for writing this, the King Khan of bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, is the next in this category. Starting his career in a serial, then moving onto cinema playing villainous roles, nobody was particularly interested in the long haired Fauji. In retrospect, he has played some brilliant characters but we remember that because of the super star status. If he had not been accepted and had failed to make it big, I am not sure if many would have remembered him. But having said that, he is somebody I would call extremely charismatic! The loverboy roles worked out great for him and today he is even called cute, an adjective that was never associated with him earlier in his career. An actor who made it big purely on his acting capability is Irrfan Khan. Not your conventional good looking neither is he the unconventional good looking, except which for eyes which I think twinkles and has that perpetual amusement. He is one of those who has a talent, pursued it and accepted the success and appreciation that came with it. Yes, Bollywood does have actors of these sorts too, who are successful solely because of their talent! A recent entry into this list would be Ranveer Singh. Definitely one of those boys you would think of as a street romeo if it wasn't for "Band Baaja Baraat" that had girls swooning over him. Finally, this wouldn't be complete if I did not mention the "serial kisser" of Bollywood, Emraan Hashmi. NOT drool worthy in terms of looks or in his case even the acting skills. This is one man who has lady luck on his side, showering him with all the luck in her power! Apart from these mentioned here, who do you think has made it big in Bollywood despite their unconventional looks?

Emraan Hashmi is the one big thing who is now just become equal to khans.No ranbir,no imran,no akshay...Emraan Hashmi the machine of Superhit movie and real acting sense....rocking dude....nxt king of bollywood after SRK..i bet

Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor were also average looking. Dev had charm or style but no looks to die for. Shatrughan Sinha was another one! Had scars on his face and whatnot. Still he managed to be popular as hero! Rajnikanth is another example...it is surprising how his audience still doesn't mind his age and accepts him playing conventional hero. Sunil Dutt, Balraj Sahni - older actors were usually unconventional. Hindi cinema's first superstar Ashok Kumar was as unconventional as it gets!
Amitabh beats everyone! His personality, his whole persona, his voice, his pedigree, his manners, his conduct, his way of speaking, his command over language...it's all magnetic and imposing! Unmatched! He was not as impressive earlier. But it is amazing how he groomed himself and made the very things his strengths which people pointed as weaknesses.
Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgan are other unconventional lookers who made a mark in terms of acting and box office. Ajay Devgan is total surprise!But he proved himself with his talent. I think even Govinda was no great shakes in terms of looks.

i would definitely add ranbir in it. no way is he good looking, but i like him for his acting.
honestly I think most of the heroes are not that good looking. only a handful are good looking eg hrithik, saif, akshay. In comparision to the flawless heroines, I am going to argue that most of the heroes are unconventional in looks.

ajay devgn, he's wasn't that good looking in the 90s. gone abit better, but still not hot.
I'm sorry but Amitabh Bachchan and Ranveer are not UNCONVENTIONAL looking .... first .... lemme point this out they both have nice features and they're both tall .... Amitabh according to most ladies and even me was the hottest back in the 70's and his times .... of course Dharmindar, Rajesh were good but Amitabh was handsome and attractive and hot .... Ranveer looks really hot at times depending on his dressing and hair do .... even the most handsome men will look ugly if he's not groomed .... what do you call unconventional? because they're dark? I think you need to get over this .... General population in India is even darker and these so called "unconventional" faces with those height are hard to find in India and I'm not bluffing because I've visited India and I'm not talking about North India. Emraan Hashmi has a baby face but he's not really unconventional. SRK has a big nose .... but a nice face structure and big eyes and dimples which to some people is attractive .... NO 1 actor has ever been successful on acting alone they have to have looks whether it's perfect looks, a bit attraction, something appealing about their looks something good to the audience to look at. Honestly, an actor is liked by audience not on acting alone .... if acting alone that takes hell of a long time to succeed as a hero .... a HERO can never make it big with acting alone they have to offer something else to the audience .... looks are always and always have been important as much as you hate it. You can pick up a light skinned North Indian and think he's good looking but I probably won't think that because skin color in men isn't at all that important they have to have nice or attractive features and of course a sizzling look to their face a roughness not a mama's boy look. Ajay and Sunil were probably unconventional at that time but even some ppl liked them because of actions, age, built, height there has to be something.

What an insane thing to say. There is no actor on the planet that is more attractive and totally sexy and super hot than Shahrukh.
@ Anonymous Mon 19:07 Feroz khan was definitely not better looking than Amitabh,he looked like a gay dude! And a lot of the 70's actors where so feminine, AB brought that Macho ism into films,he was hot looked like an asli Mard!
And I know most woman who grew up watching AB in the 70's would say that he was one of the hottest! Just watch him in Dewaar!

Seriously what is so handsome about Amitabh? He's quite ordinary looking, even in his youth. During his time in the 70s, it was Vinod Khanna, Feroze Khan who were considered good looking, not Amitabh at all.
Ajay Devgan and Shar Rukh for making it big despite not looking like leading men, especially Shar Rukh, I remember watching him in Bazigaar and never thought this below average guy would become a superstar.
I always expected the drop dead gorgeous Akshay Kumar to become a superstar, but not SRK.

srk was handsome and goodlooking from about the mid 90s to mid 2000s and big b wasn't bad either in his youth. emraan isn't bad looking. i think maybe ajay, akshay, abhishek should be on there.

Sare song har waqt super Hit hota hai. Phir bhi naja ne ye Karan Johar ke movie ke song kyun Award milta hai? Emraan is handsome and a good actor. Miles better than some of the posers who call themselves superstars. He doesn't belong on this list.
Ranveer is still a one film wonder, too early to even consider him successful, afterall even Kumar Gaurav had a hit debut!
Irfan has been successful but in parallel cinema only.
SRK and Amitabh are still not handsome men.

i am not amitabh bachchan fan but i think he was very good looking and so was shahrukh khan.... i think your list doesn't make sense and it is based on your likings and besides why is ajay devgan not in your list? and if you have mentioned amitabh, why is shatrughan sinha not in your list as he is same generation as amitabh bachchan, i could mention even more names here

Bollywood heroes make it because of their acting..very little make it because of their looks...Irfan and Amitabh is quiet good-looking..they look like men not boys...not to forget, what amazing actors they are...
you forgot big time about ajay devgaan...he is a super talented and versatile actor despite being not so good looking. i forget that, he doesn't look good when i watch him in a charecter...and emran is not a bad actor at all. i liked him in ganster, awarapaan, jannat and once upon a time in mumbai as an actor. but over all i liked this post better than the unconventional actress list.
All of those guys on the list are good-looking! Ajay and Saif should be on there, instead!
