Freida Pinto Is Average Looking:Gulshan Grover
Gulshan Grover, who turned down Irrfan Khan’s role in Slumdog Millionaire to do Hurman Baweja’s Victory, was further enlightened on cinematic matters when he was recently in Los Angeles. During a discussion on apni Freida Pinto, Gulshan blundered when he shrugged her off with a casual, “She’s okay.” The goras immediately piled on to him and asked him, “Are you all right, man? How can you call Freida okay? She’s hot, man, she’s so sexy!” A sheepish Gulshan explains, “We have so many Goan girls here who look like Freida that we tend to take them casually.” If Aishwarya Rai never generated that kind of excitement in the West it’s simply because the fair, light-eyed variety of beauty that we worship in India is a dime a dozen in Hollywood. But the dark and sensuous Freida is an exotic rarity. Seriously, Arshad Warsi’s wife, Maria Goretti, would sizzle like a Bond girl if only she’d agree to go West for a career. PS:Mods even though he gave this interview before 2 yrs this news was never posted in Pinkvilla. So pls don't delete it.Im sure this topic will make up for an interesting discussion

Maria Goretti is very gorgeous indeed.
i m from goa & i find her very attractive. She has very nice features
i noticed the same thing. indians find her ordinary and the non-south asians find her really good looking, including the chinese and japanese friends i know. but i think it's the "grass is always greener on the other side" syndrome. but i really don't think frieda is successful in h'wood yet. i mean, the only time people know her about is SM and no way is she as known as the other outsiders like penelope or antonio in the west. we still have to see how well the audience will accept her.
I'm an American who went to engineering school with many Indian students when Slumdog Millionaire was released. I noticed my American male friends found Freida very sexy while Indian friends found her average. I also noticed that my mediterranean looks garnered more attention from Indian men than girls with more conventional white looks. And that Indian guys seemed to pay attention to Indian girls that weren't especially enticing to American guys (many with obvious colored contacts which look like cataracts and are off-putting, no offense to those young ladies).
I think the role that women play in a relationship influences, at least subconsciously, what men look for in a woman's appearance. Indian men seem to look for a woman with whom they can start a family and will play a more bring a specific feminine foil to the relationship. It makes sense that, in my experience, they seem to pursue women with broad, fleshy, youthful faces with large eyes yet mature womanly bodies that exhibit apparent fertility. Westerners date longer without starting a family and have a less goal-driven type of companionship. Most American guys seem to favor girls with athletic, slightly androgynous bodies that indicate the women is more sexually-assertive enjoys the same sort of hobbies they do. Most american guys, in my experiences, prefer a more angular and mature face that doesn't compel as much need for protection. I know this is stereotypical, so I hope I didn't offend anybody.
My point being that Freida has the looks and body type that are, on the whole, more appealing to western tastes. It makes sense her career, apart from the sheer luck that is required to make it in the competitive entertainment industry, has taken of in Hollywood rather than Bollywood. And while beauty is a matter of taste, people all over the world are much more critical of actresses than average people. I don't think anybody who is being honest and not egotistically critical behind the protection of internet anonymity would meet her as a average girl at a party and would considered her unappealing. She has good skin, a symmetrical face, a healthy body, and it young looking. She meets all the universal standards at least.
There seem to be a recurrent theme as I am reading some remarks here that The West means "opening up" as in sex scenes or kissing etc... This is so hypocritical.. it is in desi films that you see more of sexual inuendo not in the west. They do not wear the caked up makeup and polished looks that you will see in most Indian movies. Depending on the genre of the movie, it will be done accordingly!
Both Freida and Aishwarya are beautiful. Why is it that when an indian girl doing well in the west is automatically compared with Aishwarya? These are 2 individuals who have chosen separate paths.
Aishwarya is considered the most beautiful woman in the world because the indian media and Indians in general are mesmerized by her white skin and light eyes. She is very charming and if she had brown eyes with dark skin there is absolutely no way she would have made it to the top. She got noticed from the West with the kind of attention she was getting from Indian expats all around the world as well.
I am in Australia. Abt 5 months, I was at the races and her add came up, the Longines one. I mentionned something about her being the Most Beautiful Woman in the world and nobody at the table shared my opinions. They said she was pretty but the most beautiful is definitely an overstatement. It sounded ridiculous.
Bottom line is Freida Pinto is quite young, she has a long way to go. Hollywood is ferocious and hard to get into and maintain and she is able to get noticed, keep having films and adds and magazine covers, this is her way to establishing herself and good on her!
Aishwarya is still doing movies at the age of 39, which is a record in Bollywood. She has a long career where she has made diverse movies and have travelled to either represent Indian Cinema or in festivals and add campaigns as well.
average in features: no. first- it's very hard to average out featues-- this is a rough guess: if you average out desi features, about only 2% have strong jawlines like hers. strong jawlines are very rare for desis. Only 5% have high cheekbones in India. fuller faces are the norm. plus her lips are neither large or round-- or thin..., she has fab balanced lips-- nor really within the mid-range.
average in melanin count: yes. if you average out desis, 80% of have this shade of skintone and eye and haircolor. she does not color her hair, etc. most desis are neither very fair or very dark-- they r bronze with black hair and deep brown eyes, like her.
and yeah... she is mixed up in India w/ ppl who look nothing like her-- even on posts on PV. most ppl cannot see beyond her skin color to see her refined features (which the West does)--- dusky is BARRED as pretty in the minds of many. she will be seen as average due to the entire coloring she has. of course, she can pancake her way out of it like dusky stars do in India.. but looks like she likes to show off her real skin-tone-- and that makes her sadly a joke-figure in India.
Mr. Gulshan's comments do reflect the majority of Indian's view. though most will strongly deny it, a bronze woman with dark brown eyes (who refuses to wear pancakes and 'lighten up' like Lara Dutta, Priyanka, Deeps, etc) will automatically be seen as ordinary-- despite having the most exqusite refined features . Freida is bold enough to be seen at events with no or little pancake (she is anti-surgery , by the way and prefers the natural look).
Plus , different tastes in shapes too:
Most desis also prefer puffy voloptous faces (called doll faces) and dislike high-cheekbones-- but the West like high-cheekbones and sleeker slimmer faces.
I remember reading this in one of the mags and I thought at the time that he was being a poor sport because he didn't end up getting the part in Slumdog Millionaire... He also made a similar remark trashing Naveen Andrews because he didn't get to act opposite Aishwarya in Provoked!
who says Frida is a success in Hollywood???!! she has only done 3 min role in slumdog, she got media attention but THAT IS IT....no big films, nothing major
it is true, Frida is average looking....n the other thing about ash is also true, she is pretty but for them she looks like all the other actresses there
for the people who says julia roberts and some other big names also called aishwarya as the most beautiful ....you are missing a very important point ...these statements by julia or another became known NOT BECAUSE OF AISHWARYA S BEAUTY JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE THE WORDS FROM "A HOLLYWOOD CELEB"
another thing is stop assuming that aishwarya failed as she is conservative it s such a ridiculous claim after she made dhoom 2 ...and some other kissing scenes- she failed ...stop linking her failure with opening up or sexiness -everyone in india knows aishwarya also tries to look sexy, shows body when she wants like it wwas seen in dhoom 2,ravanaan(bed scene) ...and many others
accept thhe fact that freida is a talent while aishwarya is just former miis world she can achieve only in bollywood where fame is easy and where your father in law is a legend
so many assumptions going on here, that freida got through the cracks thanks to her exotic skin tone or because she is willing to expose...fact is, aishwarya rai does her fair share of exposing, kissing, love scenes because the role requires it . and that is not wrong, but that cant be the reason freida became more popular. people willing to expose are dime and dozen here in the west. something about freida must have been appealing with the movie makers, thats all.
all indian christians are not goan.
ashs complexion is no way light brown, she has to be fair,I ve seen her turning shades lighter when she is in the west, she just tans easily ,the colours that she choses to wear like white ,light pink ,lilac and black enhances her tan,she has a poor dress and colour sense thats it
anyway there are lots of beautiful women with brown skin google for kajal agarwal or nithya menon,no amount of white skin can match their cuteness, a womens beauty lies in her eyes and her smile not her skin tone
I think freida doesn't present herself as glam doll that's why people don't think she is a great looker if she did a 4 inches pancake lift her brows and injected her lips and has false eyelashes on all the time colored her hair curl them all the time then she would be called beautiful.... as lots of regular people don't understand beautiful otherwise !!!
Aishwarya Rai is very well known outside India, her problem is not that her beauty is not interesting for Westerners. It is. She is very exotic for us, not only because she has dark skin (compared to white skin) and light eyes but because her features are very beautiful. Freida is a pretty girl, but trust me, there are a lot of dark girls in the US and in Europe as well. Latinos, African Americans, Indians, Arabic girls. it's not such a rarity.
I think the simple truth is that she was lucky. To be in the right place at the right time. I am white and I don't see her as beautiful. More like cute. And more then that, she is willing to pose and act in parts Aishwarya never would have. Just look at the pic above, Aishwarya would have never done that, she's too conservative. People don't like that in the West. In the west, sex sells a lot. And while Aishwarya is beautiful, she's not sexy. Freida is obviously willing to get sexed up, so that's why she has success.
she is
she is beautiful
look everyone is beautiful in their own way....also you & me. Beauty standard is something that has fluctuated greatly recently... Freida's face is her nicest feature, it's pleasing and certainly not offensive [made-up]. Aishwarya has transformed into a real beauty over the years and I would say they are all damn gorgeous! They are iconic in a way!
freida pinto is not a goan.....infact both freida pinto and aishwarya rai hail from mangalore(south india).
just for the record. FreiDa isn't Goan. She's from Mangalore, just like Mrs Rai. settled in Bombay. There's no question of debate here cos I'm a distant relative of hers. And yes, she is very average lookin in person. But lets be fair to her. She has got lucky and struck big. So let her bask in her glory and ignore ppl like Mr Grover. And these pointless comparisons.
I agree with Gulshan Grover.

fyi to you naive Ash fans: Julia Roberts and Matthew McConhey never called Ash "the most beautiful woman."
For u, a naive hater or not hater of Aish: Julia Roberts indeed called her as "the most beautiful woman in the world" Check wikipedia my dear!
Grover's just jealous of her success. Remember how he has been bragging since the 80s whenever he got an international project ? He's been trying to break into hollywood for years, lolz, no wonder he can't appreciate young Freida's new success.
Funny that roden-faced Gulshan Grover condescendingly calls someone else 'average' looking. Hah!
Freida's stunning, she stands out in an Indian crowd too, not everyone has such delicate balanced features.
yes., she is..and neither is she sexy...
Indians have very wrong sense for beauty esp in recent times...white skin, zero size ( no boobs, no ass), and a grant name tag
I think in bollywood people just have no manners..Thy keep saying nasty things about people for no reasonl
@cherrycrush: please dont talk about aish fans!..they are the most obssessed of the lot..u guys will not hear anyone else out..its all about Aish here..so you learn to take it when people are supporting Frieda..i'm glad thats happening..and i hope frieda makes it big too..it will be a lesson to the looks obssessed indian society which cant see beyond looks..frieda is real and has a charming personality which adds to her looks which is in no means average, she is a stunning lady..
Theres different kinds of beauty, Ash and Freida both have different appeal. Freida is very beautiful
in an off beat way, something so vulnerable about that waif like face, the sensuous lips and faraway
look; Ash is Ash no one can doubt her movie star beauty
