In her first big budget film and fourth release Rise of the Planet of Apes, Mumbai-raised Freida Pinto has a second worldwide hit. While many critics used words such as 'comely' and 'beautiful' to describe her, they also complained her role as an assistant to vet (played by James Franco ) was not well-written.

'Freida Pinto is along for the ride as the pleasant vet,' wrote one while the Atlantic magazine critic complained, 'Pinto makes almost no impression at all as the Underwritten Girlfriend.'

There was more to come: 'Pinto looks more beautiful than ever but is playing the most boringly decorous tag-along girlfriend seen onscreen in years.'

Another critic moaned: 'Freida Pinto from Slumdog Millionaire is Will's primatologist girlfriend who has little personality and few lines.'

And yet, this is a runaway box office hit, with a $54 million opening in North America far exceeding the $40 million forecast by major box office pundits, and there is already the talk of a sequel. And if her character is retained in the next film, she could become the first India-born actress to take a $1 million paycheck.

But Freida has to fight hard to get meatier roles, several analysts told New York magazine.

'Like Halle Berry before her, Pinto needs to prove that she has more going on than meets the eye,' the magazine wrote in analyzing her career.

'The real question is drive,' said a Hollywood manager. 'Does she have the determination? You'd think it would be talent that informs the outcome for clients, but the real factor is almost always, 'How badly do they want it? How hard are they willing to work?' It's almost never just talent or looks. I don't know what her drive is.'

She has to prove to the studios and casting directors that she is more than a pretty woman, a publicist told the magazine.

'The publicity part is easy for her -- you can always put her in a photo shoot in a pretty dress -- but the hard part is the material worth writing about,' he added. 'Look at Charlize Theron and [Nicole] Kidman: They made it a point to push themselves -- and their agents -- to be thought of differently. So I actually think she needs to do something where you don't look perfect.'

The prequel to the 1968 classic The Planet of the Apes, the new film is about the dangerous situation coming out of a scientist's unwitting creation of an army of super smart apes.

The film is getting high praise for the CGI ape (Andy Serkis) that delivers a performance of emotion, intelligence and physical strength.

In a few territories outside North America, the film made $23 million over the weekend. Made for $93 million -- unlike many other high tech films such as The Cars which cost about $200 million -- the film is expected to arrive in the UK, Japan and several bigger world markets in the next few weeks.

The question then remains if it would make more money than Freida's first film Slumdog Millionaire which grossed an awesome $370 million worldwide. That film was made for $15 million. Though she was noticed worldwide in it, she is getting the big billing -- in fact, the second following James Franco -- in the new film.

Her second film -- Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger -- brought her good reviews too. But she was part of ensemble casting, and in her controversial film Miral, she played a conflicted Palestinian. That film died quickly at the box office, making less than $1 million worldwide.

She will have a busy year travelling across the globe not only to promote Planet but her upcoming films as well. Immortals will release in November, and is her first film with an Indian director. Tarsem Singh has cast her as an oracle priestess in Greece.

After that, will be Michael Winterbottom's adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles set in India -- called Trishna. It will premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) next month, where her Slumdog had also premiered.

She plays a princess in the Arab-world movie Black Gold, a French production that also has Antonio Banderas

Look at that perfect facial structure......No wonder the camera loves her!

If she was compared to nicole or charlize, its a compliment to freida. They both are stunning and awesome actresses. Ash is nowhere close to them.

This one is an entertaining film. Loved charming James Franco, the rising star. Saying this despite never being a big fan of the Ape films which I viewed on TV- one with Mark Wahlberg, and the other classic 60s one.And so what if Freida has a small role? She still stands out and it's good to see an India born actress shine in Hollywood. She looks Indian but can also blend well with the multi- cultural crowd and look Hispanic and so on. Maybe she has some Portuguese roots like the Brazilians. Her complexion is exotic, almost like Gisele Bundchen and Alessandra's. She dresses up chic as well. No wonder she's playing varied roles. Though she has a long way to go, it's a real good start. She's indeed lucky. The concept of beauty sometimes vary from country to country. Beautiful women may not always be lucky, as there are many around the world who sadly didn't get their due.But as of now Frieda stars seem to be rising. That's cool:):)

yeah ppl are blind and ignorant and you are the silliest person on this earth...aishwarya and Freida is not even comparison because ash is Bollywood actress and Frieda is not...so there is no point of comparison that who did better in Hollywood!!!and plz tell us all what ash has done in Hollywood...just a disastrous pink panther2....she was well known actress of Bollywood at 34 she accepted a 10min role in PP2 and you think its better than how do you have a problem with Freida signing a 10min role in planet of apes...the critics didn't even bother to comment on her performance...and the rest of the films ash did were made by British born Indians...if ash can do a 10min role than how do you have a problem with Freida signing a 10min role in planet of apes.... L'Oreal adds, Cannes and opera appearances is not Hollywood and if u include these in Hollywood than Freida had done better in this department with many covers of famous magazines in UK and US ,she is a L'Oreal ambassador and she is working with real Hollywood people.

and plz don't forget that even ash wasn't taken serious as an actress even after spending 10 years in Bollywood...she failed to impressed the critics and even by her fans she is taken a gorgeous woman thats it!! so forget Frieda!!

ash was a well established actress light eyed light skinned beauty with a title of miss world but Freida has nothing.. if compares to ash she is an average looking girl but still she managed to shine through her 15min role in slumdog she got herself noticed at Oscars...maybe the producers are confused they don't know if the western public will accept a brown Indian girl in a lead role thats why they are giving her small roles...she is a hard working girl.

Yea, I agree with the other poster, Kangana is the only bollywood actresses who looks white.
When I first saw her photos I had no clue she was Indian, she looked like a white girl with her orange curly hair and facial features. Not even Kareena can pass for white, her features are too Middle Eastern.
And this comment comes from someone who's born and raised in the US and went to 99% white schools

@kitty the sequel of movie already exists. It is a prequel to the first planet of the apes movie set in modern times.

To the person who mentioned the New York magazine article.
Please read the article again. The magazine never said she was zero and had no future. It was just speculating on her future and how the Apes release would affect it. The article was wrong in comparing her to Nicole Kidman and Charlise Theron because they are both as white can be even if they are not from the US and Frieda is still just starting out and is a woman of color. New York magazine is not New York Times so don't take it as the last word.
To me, her future looks pretty secure with three movies with three respected directors - Jean Jacques Annaud's Black Gold opposite Andtonio Banderas, Tarsem's Immortals opposite a boatload of Hollywood hot guys and Winterbottom's Trisna. Michael Winterbottom has worked with Kate and Angelina Jolie. Even if she doesn't sign any more films I would consider her one of the most successful Indians in Hollywood.
And don't forget her lucrative L'oreal contract.
Tho' she had a small role in Apes.....she was one of the most visible promoters ....out on all morning and talk shows and doing a great job of it......and has done herself a great deal of good. People really take to her here in the States ....with her great sense of style and she is so articulate.....Her education really shows....Yes, she has developed an accent but she does it so well and it's a really smart move I think if you want a career in Hollywood.
Do you know how hard it is for a woman of color to make it in Hollywood? Stop tearing her down.

Anonymous's picture

I really hope she makes smart choices and works harder! I really like her. She is more real than so many Bollywood Stars.

Kitty - it's nice that you and so many more are positive when something nice happens for others... very nice that you offer your support.

as for the rest of the un-nice comments-> hate is not healthy.

olivia wilde barely had a role in cow boys and aliens, blake lively's role was for 5 mins in green lantern, rosie huntington-whitely did not even bother 'acting' in transformers 3 but their own people did not whine and moan about that. Its a hollywood action film, girls usually have less to do unless they are playing a comic book character so people CALM DOWN AND STOP PUTTING HER DOWN.

Anonymous's picture

Not indian, but so proud of freida for making big in the west!! Good luck Freida!!

"Comparing hollywood to bollywood, it's a big difference because Hollywood is way above a person skin color" I am getting tired of these crappy comments. Hollywwod has always been white and blonde with very few non white stars. Hollywood does not even reflect the diversity of USA. Only the occasional token. Aishwarya became an international star thanks to Loreal, they are now following a different strategy for the same goals with Freida. Also Hollywood is desperate to break into the Indian market and slowly and steadily spread American culture. India is the last virgin market for them. And its big. Freida is lovely, but a lot of other things are at work. Freida is recognisably Indian. Of course they will pick her. rather than someone like Kangana who said in an interview that Italians were surprised to learn she is Indian. And yes I want a recognisably Indian beauty to make it big, not someone who could be from anywhere.

"you people are making me ROFLMAO!!!!!
NO ONE in hollywood takes her seriously.. She was just an EXTRA in that movie.

Pathetic .. Indians will always be pathetic"

You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Well, so what if she had a small role in the film, she was heavily promoted here in America for Rise of the Apes. . She's been on practically every talk show promoting this movie, so obviously she is considered a star. She just completed Black Gold and she's working on The Immortals with Henry Cavill and Kelan Lutz so I think Hollywood takes her pretty seriously. Idiot, keep being an Idiot.

Anonymous's picture

i doubt its a blockbuster bc of frieda. the movie has all the elements right. but good for her.

Anonymous's picture

LMAO - what a stupid comment "Freida Pinto is poised to become the next big thing from India. Her talent is a given. ...in Hollywood she is a hot ticket and in Hollywood [not B'wood] she know the right people to keep her there. This is her season!!!"

Did you read the article in NY Magazine? IT said she is a ZERO with no acting talent and a short future in Hollywood. Her rating is SELL.

Her role in Apes was even shorter than Slumdogs even the neighbor had more lines.

.

Guys go see the movie, its awesome... probably the best Hollywood blockbuster of the summer!

Freida's part is SMALL but hey, her track record is pretty good for a newcomer, 4 releases and 2 mega hits! The best is yet to come for her, this is just the beginning. Anyway, the movie is good and the special effects are cool. I can't wait for the sequel! :)

Anonymous's picture

OK .. OK this is TOO FUNNY guyS!!

CAN ANYONE TELL ME THIS>>> "HOW in Heck is she successful? She did not have any major role or ANYTHIGN.. And you are basically crediting the whole movie's success to frieda.. HOW INCREDIBLEY HILLARIOUS!!"

You make me LAUGH! She didnt do ANYTHING there, she was basically a FIXTURE in that movie.. did you read the WHOLE thing? or do you NOT understand ENGLISH?

Anonymous's picture

She is overrated but you got to give her credits instead of chopping her into pieces. She has lady luck on her side in the west! Comparing hollywood to bollywood, it's a big difference because Hollywood is way above a person skin color. India loves Aish because she represents what 95% of the population do not have light-eyes and fair complexion! Frieda said in one of her interviews, she tried hard to make it in bollywood but was turned down repeatedly, she was thinking of being a wedding planner instead! There are talented british/american indian actresses who could not make it big in Hollywood! Frieda had lots of exposures with the release of Slumdog Millionnaire with various magazines, events, talk shows and interactions showing her personality and exoticness! People are trying to figure what nationality she represents and its really good for her! I watched Aish on American Talk shows and she does not have that natural personality and naiveness that Frieda represents! Looks are not that important in Hollywood! They have all shades of colors and ethnicity that they could choose, but Frieda is a mystery to them!

Anonymous's picture

im really proud of her...she had a 15min role in slumdog and she worked so hard to be known in Hollywood....if some bunch of stupid people think that she is enjoying the fame of her Oscar movie...there were others too in that film...but why only Frieda became so well known and popular...because she worked hard, she is getting films on her known...she doesn't walk around with the title of "the most beautiful woman" she doesn't pay some PR to print news about her that she was offered this or that movie...she is actually working with big directors even if its a 15min role!!! we should be proud of her she doesn't have white skin, light eyes as a ticket to get entry in Bollywood with her average looks she is working so hard to look great by wearing gorgeous dresses and letting the world know that Indians women also have a sense f dressing they can also top the vogue best dresses woman.!!

way to go freida.. better you than that nincompop ash.

why does she get recognized for a 10 min role in blockbuster movies? she didn't do any thing in slumdog same goes for this one, i fail to take her as a serious hollywood actress.. thats a joke! I would say even Aishwarya has done a way better job in 'hollywood' than her! She's so avg looking, all bones, no bust, no butt, dull face. Seriously ppl must b blind n ignorant

Anonymous's picture

well well well we will all be there to see...I guess its just a start for her..and if she wasent talented enough she wount have been seen after SDM. So cheers to her success no matter how small was the role and good luck for her upcoming movies.

Wonder why rediff did not comment on Aishwarya's career in hollywood this way. They cant believe a dark skinned Indian is doing so well in the West where the war painted Aishwarya could not

I am happy that she is part of a hit film again, even if her contribution to it is minimal. HOWEVER--I am still pissed at the manner in which she has been speaking badly about India and Bollywood.

I hope she will stop her tirade now that she seems to have found continued success in Hollywood. Do well there--and stop badmouthing India and Hindi cinema. Patriotic Indians like self--we cannot stand such attitude.
