FACT: Priynaka looks exqusite, no matter what her shade or tone- it's her aura and features which makes her glow pretty.

It's ppl like u who keep the concept that certain shades (read darker) are for avg folks and the lighter tones (even if their features are messed up) are the royals. pathetic.

she is pretty but not pretty like aish or kareena or priyanka"==> This is all a matter of opinion. Living out in Europe, not a lot of ppl will take a fair desi and think she's attractive. We see pure strucutre. Going by smile-power alone, Frieda has the prettiest smile of them all. So going by structue alone, these 3 look often too makeup-ed or high-fashioned and artifical = and none really have very high cheekbones or slim looks:

Aish: She has beautiful eyes but the square face/round face - lower cheekbones does not work many times as a 'great beauty'.. but she's an icon now- so no one can say anything here. Not our type though. Too much artifice there often.

Kar: She's groomed herself to look hip (though her shoulders are too wide for her slim frame). But structure-wise, she tended to have heavier eyebrows/narrow forehead and stronger jaws (which she's groomed much better now). We considered her sis Karmisa as the prettier one with blue eyes.. and Kar seems to look nice after her groom and fashion -- she has tended to look more stonger (ie. some say masculine) otherwise in terms of features in many angles. She played a similar role in Chameli, but there was too much emphasis on fashion (expensive colorful slum clothes to start a fashion trend). This emphasis on fashion makes the film a bit fake..

Priyanka: A beautiful one- but she had lots of plastic surgery which makes her look too artificial today.

All 3, while pretty, would have looked TERRIBLE playing the SM role. it would have looked like a fashion brigade as they would have made their stylist give them expensive slum clothes.. fake.

Frieda looked lovely, real and beautiful playing the role.
It fit her to a T.

If you think about it, her career started at when she was 24, not when she was 18.==> No, she started when she was 18 in Mumbai-- see her modeling ads. She was also appearing in a TV show her sis was producing. She could have called it that and married from then (many do). She was trying to get films in Mumbai when this happened. anyhow, she comes from a family where an education is mandatory-- so star or not-- she was determined and would finish her education. Stars keep saying education is key-- but drop out-- and millions of poor starry-eyed fans say they too will chase that big dream. that big dream of being the #1 star is rarer than winning a lottery-- so stars like Brooke Shields. etc who said: NO MATTER WHAT, finishing an education, sets a good example for the youth to follow. So each of the SM children are getting an education, not stardom- to set an example. The only ones in SM (big stars) who probably did not finish college is Dev and Anil. Hopefully, all the kids will.

Also think Desis (including NRIs-born) do have DIFFERENT tastes- high-cheekbones like Eva Longoia or even Maailika's are overlooked-- they prefer babyish Indian faces like Bhaghashre or Aish when she started with the rounder faces. Notice those sorts of babyish looks here in the West get lower ratings too. Yet, high-cheekbones and slim figures actually make the ratings go down in many circles there in Delhi.. have actually heard of a very pretty tall NYC desi model (with guys drooling in NYC over her) with high cheekbones going to Delhi being told "lurki nahi sundhar hai... bahooth pathli hai... gaal under jaaha hai" (she is very thin.. her cheeks are sunken in).
ANd how would u know? it's not like ur an NRI. Megan Fox is considered one of the seciest women in hollywood (i don't agree) BUT her face is quite thin and sunken in. She has very prominent cheek bones.....freshy

First of all, I never said slum people are ugly or unattractive and neither did I say that Frieda is ugly. I only said I don't fidn her pretty but I find her average, NOT ugly which is MY opinion. And, see there are some people who agree with me and there are those who don't agree with me. Yeah, slum ppl can be pretty too and of course they are. But, we have this perception of them (slum ppl) being untidy and ungroomed due to the situation they live in. I don't think danny would have chosen a super gorgeous girl and try to change our perception that is DEEPLY engrained in our minds. I don't know why you woulnt agree with me on that.
Oh and someone said that she's educated and comes from a rich family. Well good for her. If you think about it, her career started at when she was 24, not when she was 18. At 24, you are supposed to have decent amount of education done.Before she was offered this role, i am sure she was doing modelling or some advertising stuff. If she had been offered this role when she was 18, I bet you she wouldnt think twice to drop out of school. And,there are other actresses who have degrees in business and engineering. But, she has only in arts.But, still that's really good for her. There are other actresses who come from RICH families. But, still you see a BIG change in their appearance from how they appear when they first start off their career and when they are 3 or 4 movies old. That's just the way things have gone. I am pretty sure. She will be drastically changing as she gets older in the industry.

ok-- she is one of the few actresses in Hollywood and Bollywood with even a college degree (English per an article; top honors-- same school as Shobha De graduated in). She did that with a strong purpose, whether she would be famous or not. comes from a family where all women are educated.

these days, these actors and actresses all say 'stay in school and education is key'.. how of them actually follow that?? how many.

so let's get this straight:
wear pounds of Bollywood makeup to look glam: non-slum
wear no makeup to very little and get an education: slum

yes, this about sums up the shallow desi & nri mentality.

Well.. there are many misfortunate street girls in India who happen to end up the way Latika did in SM-- and a lot of them are very pretty too but we all tend to look away and not see them as human. Whether pretty or not, they are all human- and it's high times those roles are played to show the plight of those who do not have a voice.

If SM forced one thing, it forced us to see those we don't want to as: HUMAN. Yes, slummers can be pretty. got that??

In the LA shopping photo scenes, they got on her back because she was weaning heels with jeans (and looking great). Now here she's shopping with flats and jeans (and looking great). still on her back, some folks.

the hatred towards an artist (desi) who is just starting out is disturbing-- especially when the hate in the past went racial towards her and Frieda fans too. It's some class-warfare that ppl are in denial with.

Freida is a RICH (she grew up in wealth, ppl-- lived in NJ, U.S. during some years as they established Palace of Asia and some hotels here), beautiful, bright, smart and educated woman. But if she was a slum girl and grew up poor, she would be all the more beautiful. All are humans, learn that- including slum ppl.

Freida looks natually gorgeous. She is like a simple girl-next-door with a lot of sprit and zest. And then she can look very glamouous too.

It's puzzling why some (her own kind) hate her so much. A lot of the hate against her seems to arise from a lot of low-self-esteem about how desi women look on the whole (i.e skin color must be very fair to be pretty.. and Frieda won't wear heavy makeup to look very fair ??;;; a woman must be voluptuous- thin in India is still associated with labor class ??;; pehaps elegant hooked stronger noses like many Bollywood herorines have [which many of the elites of India have] vs small Terri Hatcher type tiny noses are preferred there). Ppl can no longer call Frieda racial slurs or a maid as PV blocks that now. So politely saying she looks like a slummer is the way to say you don't like the look-- or she reflects the labor class look. But if someone does not like your fave star's look, then that person is jealous. go figure.

Desi women are so utterly gorgeous in different ways. But most desis (even NRI-born desis) block out any beauty but the one they are taught and grew up with. Frieda reflects a stunning part of Indian beauty, which many desis do block, yet so many can see clearly.

Danny Boyle has gone on record indicating he chose Freida because not only was she beautfiul (yes, he has mentioned that he had to choose someone who would be the most beautiful person in the world to the hero, Dev-- and that he found her very beautiful)-- but also very intelligent. He found the two qualities together in her. And that is the new desi woman: beautiful and intelligent.
