Can an Unglamorous Actress ever be NO.1?
Madhubala, Rekha, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Preity Zinta, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, and Priyanka Chopra. All these actresses have ruled at the No. 1 spot at sometime or another in Bollywood history. And all have one thing in common. Glamour. This brings out a revelation that never has Bollywood had a non glamourous actress be considered the "No.1". Tabu, Shabani Azmi, Smita Patil, Nandita Das, and others have never reached that height of fame. Kajol and Rani may be considred somewhat of an exception but lets not foget that Kajol was first greatly apprecaited for her chiffon saris in KKHH and Rani was the same for her glamourous looks in Chalte Chalte. These films were turning ponts for the usually non glamourous cousin actresses. But, do you think an unglamourous actress like Konkana or Vidya can ever be "No.1"?

Both of em are shallow. If a hollywood actress isnt wearing make up, shes showing some skin to compensate for it. Yes even hotties like Scarlett Johanssen, Megan Fox, Jessica Alba etc wear minimal looking make up but always show off their figures. Bollywood is more about face beautiful and Hollywood is more about body beautiful. Name one top hollywood actress whose plus size?

I think Nandita Das is gorgeous too but L.A is all about dolled up babes. Its all abt hair extensions, lip jobs, boob jobs, the works and no i'm not talking about the desis. Its not a good thing but this is the way it is, if you're not showing leg or cleavage or both you're not considered glam. So compared to that lot, Das would be unglamourous, but by no means shes not sexy. Shes super sexy and has this earthy exotic aura about her.
Nandita Das is VERY good looking.. just because she does not doll herself up and play the dumb makeup-ed belle, does NOT mean she is not glamourous. In NYC, she would have all the guys after her.. but leave it up to us desis to put her in a non-glamour bracket, simply bcoz she's dusky.
she has a more symmtrical and finer face than most #1 heroines of India.
look at her.. she's gorgeous... and don't give me this she's non-glamourus, etc...
maybe in NYC, caked-up baby-like doll faces which you think is 'glamourous' might be seen as strange.. they like natural faces and very good refined features out in California, NYC, etc....

look at hollywood, there is no top and everyone respects each other.
no one is natural in bollywood. look at the actresses in films and interviews. look at their make up.
in hollywood, celebs go for interviews with minimal make up! i mean look at kat in race, she was basically in the film to promote make up.
and look at cate blanchett in her films. hardly any make up, but drop dead gorgeous

Sorry but you are mistaken there.. There is a big difference between becoming No.1 and between making it big. From the actresses you have mentioned the only two who became number one were Rekha and Sridevi and before them it was Hema Malini.
All the rest have made it to A grade actress but NOT no.1.
Its a really false marketing thing to call Madhubala as the No.1 and the same as well goes for Madhuri Dixit. The last no.1 was Sridevi. Madhubala was never a No.1. There always was Meena Kumari, Nutan.
People who do not know about facts should stop writting false statements.

You can''t deny that glamour too is important but what our actrsses need more is acting skills. An actress like Sridevi became the most successful actress of India including Tamil,Telugu and Hindi films not only because she was perfect beauty but more than that because of her impeccable acting and dancing skills. Though I think that nowdays there is not as much emphasis on beauty and dance as it used to be. Most of our recent actrsses after Ash, Kareena are just fine or above average at looks...not like the goddesses Hema Malini or Sridevi. If you see that way..although actrsses like Kajol and Rani look glamourous when presented well..they are just ok at looks.

You are making a big mistake by mixing up between glamour and good looking. Good looking is something a person or actress come with while glmaour is how the actress is presented in a film.
Hema Malini and Sridevi were cosidered to be perfect goddess like beauty while lot of complains was there about Madhuri's complexion and brones. Yet she could look glamourous when needed in the film and became the biggest superstar ever. Madhuri's beta and Sailaab were actually non glamorous role, yes both had two sexy numbers but other than that the characters were real and substatial (as much mainstream films permit).
Mainstream film always have glamour, it is normal, glamour has no conflict with good performance.
Nandita Das can never be number 1 as she does not even try mainstream film, but hey wait a sec she tried Aks with amitabh but it was a flop, everybody knows tha Shaban , Smita did all sorts of films. Kajol is a totally mainstream glamorous actress.
Rani and kareena has been glamours and non glamorous both.
Nargis and Madhuri Dixit ruled for their enrmous versatility and talent and ability to being glamorous (Awara, Andaz, Hahk, devdas) and non glamorous (mother India, raat aur din, mrityudand, sangeet, prahar, mohra, abodh)
Vidya Balan has been likened with madhuri for her talent, she can become number 1 but not with films like Ishqiya but with Parineeta.
As for Tabu she has done many glamorous role she did sexy role even down south, her film vijaypath , hera pheri, sajan chale sasural, takshak etc. you have not watched I guess.
Kajol was very sexy in a movie poll in 1995 ahe was said to be the most sexy after mamta kulkarni and shilpa Shrirodhkar.
I think you want to say kajol or rani is not bright complexion and not conventionally beautiful.
Vidya has been likened with Madhuri Dixit for her powerful and sensible performances.

Shabana azmi did amar akbar anthony and many other masala films, smita patil did namak halal and many other such films...
I am surprised you are saying kajol is exceptional, kajol is an out an out a mainstream film actress, she will does a film unless it ensures BO success, she never really tried out any off beat films. In all her prime time films had sexy costumes and songs, her 'meri khwabo mein' of ddlj costume was very sexy, in gupt she wore minis kirt throughout the film not to mention yeh dillagi, hulchul etc....
rani is also the same, yet she tried non off beat film like Madhuri or Rekha but basically she has been glamouris in all other films. kajol and rani are even more Yash Raj and Karan Johar actresses with manish malhotra make up.
So the question remains whether Nandita Das can be number 1 answer is no, and it is not because she is talented and not glamorous, but because she has not done mainstream films that can draw mass attention.
If Nandita wants she can be glamorous.
The biggest problem is with someone who things glamour and talent is mutually exclusive. Madhuri Dixit, Meryl Streep, Nargis are uber talent and can carry anything glamorous or non glamorous.
The answer is NO, so long as bollywood turns out crap film which require zero acting, only ability to look good with pounds of makeup.....
If ever bollywood makes quality films, only then can an actress with substance rise to the top.
It's not like the glam girls like Ash or Rani have no talent. They've proved themselves in films like Taal, Raincoat, Chkher Bali, Guru and Hey Ram, Black respectively! So it's the mindset of the producers and people that has to change! Believe me, the moment the change comes, you'll not hear Katrina Kaif's name ever again!

Do you think dhak dhak from beta and kate nahi kat it from Movie mr india would have gained the same popularity if it was done by konkana sen or shabana aami. I dont think so... these kind of actings songs can only be done by glamrous actress like madhuri and shri devi. I can not imagine..aishwarya rai doing movie like mandi or paar..they dont fit in that kind of role cause of their look..konkanasen is no one right now in parallel cinema..that position can never be taken by kareena
I agree with whoever talk about Precious. I had begun to think about that movie half way into ur paragraph before u even mentioned it. Its sad that an actress like Monique (dark and overweight) would NEVER be acknowledged in Bollywood. yet, in Hollywood, she has just won a Golden Globe.
You know this debate can go on forever and ever. The main reason,I think,for this imparity of popularity between them is the way bollywood works. We still have a huge niche audience for 'masala movies',the ones reviewers consider 'stupid' but still make for a huge box office attraction. Actresses whose only asset is their ability to act can't dance around in chiffon sarees and look inane and useless throughout the movie. But after a period of being around and gaining experience,glamorous actresses can always de-glam and do arty stuff too. The thing is,acting can be learnt. Ash,PC,Kareena,Kajol,Karishma etc were all horrible in their initial movies but they learnt with time. So, when the glamorous actresses finally decide to shed their inhibitions and tread the tougher path,they have enough experience and have learnt enough to pull it off. So, they always have an edge over the 'unglamorous' actresses because they are able to please all the different kinds of audiences...

and by glamour being underrated i meant this post ! it definitly is not in Bollywood my dear ! and let me tell you again its not easy to look like a diva , you need to know how to carry yourself and that comes from within ,only part of it can be taught. Being glamourous comes from within anyone off the street cannot handle it.you have to live a life under scrutiny ,every thing about you is sensationalised . how many of us can promise to even look presentable all the time?
well whoever here thinks its easy to look glamourous with this kind of stress has definitly lost touch with the fact that, at the end of the day they are just human perhaps living more complicated lives then ours.
Zeenath,Parveen,Rekha,Sridevi,Madhuri etc Ash,Kareena,Pri...and now Kat..with the right director,clever lighting,cotton sarees and a good background score have delivered,Very well.The "art" directors beg to work with these "glamorous' actresses to get their films started.Only when they have less work, do these stars reluctantly agree.
But Can you imagine Konkona in Tees Maar Khan,Vidya in Golmaal returns 3, Shahana in Dostana 2,Tabu in housefull?
The glamorous stars learn to act over the years..the snooty arty ones don't even bother to learn to dance ,look like a sexy diva when needed..It is BOLLYWOOD meri jaan..go do theatre if you cant meet the industries demands!
Its not about the clothes and makeup and hair... anyone off the streets can be glamorized. its all about the acting and the work. remember aishwarya in taal she had no makeup on and was amazing in that film... remember rani in yuva and saathiya... and kareena in chameli and jab we met. makeup does not equal beauty.
I disagree with the statement that " Anyone could have done fashion".Priyanka did a tremedous job and every award whether popular or critics have gone to her.I am a girl and still like Priyanka because the women can act. I agree that katrina is a terrible waist of screen space and time.Why do we need to make our acrtesses look bad or boring to prove they are intelligent or can act.This is basic difference between us and hollywood. There they pay attention to all round aspects of an actress. recent movie "preecious" is an exception. Nandita das is a very gorgeous woman and i feel sad that she is made to look so drab in her movies .Maybe because the script demands it.I would love to see her in a commerical masala movie styled by some of the best designers. I think she looks better and acts better than Kajol.Kareena was great in jab we met no denying it.However priyanka was also perfect for the role in fashion.Hence both won awards in the years their movies released.
