The Most Underrated Actresses of Bollywood
This post is based on the most underrated actresses of Bollywood. In this case, I mean all those actresses who had the capability to gain awards and recognition, but despite their amazing acting skills they are often missed out from various lists or do not even get signed for movies. I will say the director is to blame in some areas - - Konkona Sen Sharma - her acting has a sense of "reality," which always makes me feel that I am watching a movie based on true life story. For example - Mr & Mrs. Iyer. Unfortunately, for a long time she is not getting any splendid roles to prove her capability of acting. I still like her as an actress, because her purpose is to "ACT," rather than getting all those attention. - Isha Koppikar - Some of you might disagree with me in this case. The reason why I feel she is underrated is because I think she is most of the time asked to do "supporting roles," but despite her roles being so minor, I feel she shows immense talent in her acting skills. For example - Pinjar. Movies where she had the chance to be the lead actress, either had a bad role or a horrible plot/screen play. I think if she was given the chance to do good movies with great directors and an amazing major role, she could have proved herself to be a very talented actress - Nandita Das - I feel happy that Nandita Das has won lots of awards and recognitions that she totally deserved. In a way, she is not much seen in those "masala" movies of Bollywood (which are unfortunately more popular), and good thing is that she herself is not interested in those "item" movies. Her movies usually has a message to the audience that potrays the "real life" problems. Her movies as an actress include - Fire, 1947 Earth, Bawandar, Provoked, etc. She has equally proved us to be an amazing director in Firaaq. - Lara Dutta - I feel this woman is talented, beautiful and ofcourse very intelligent as well! Loved her in movies like No Entry, Billu Barber, Housefull, Masti and Don (1 & 2). These movies show us her versatility! I also feel that instead of Katrina Kaif she could have been a better choice for Dhoom 3 (apology to the Beautiful Katrina's fans) - Manisha Koraila - what an immense talent she is! Especially in Khamoshi! Loved her from the beginning. I cannot blame the director this time, because I feel most of the directors gave her full justice. I am happy that she also won awards for proving her amazing acting skils in various roles & movies. However, I feel she has less recognition compared to other actresses like Madhuri Dixit. - Tabu - Who can forget her in the movie Chandni Bar? I almost cried watching that movie, her acting was so genuine and real! I feel Tabu is a very versatile actress because she has performed in other types of roles as well, for ex - Virasaat, Chachi 420, Hera Pheri, Astitva, etc. She truly deserves a lot more recognition! Perhaps she should also make a good come back to hindi movies! - Sonali Bendre - another Gorgeous, Glamorous & Graceful actress, who despite her amazing looks and charm could not make it big in Bollywood! - Shilpa Shetty - The "Dhadkan" Girl, truly deserved to win everyone's dhadkan. Her acting in Life in a Metro was equally good as well. It was only when she won Big Brother & married Raj Kundra, that caused her to be in the limelight. - Juhi Chawla - She is one actress who was always compared to Madhuri Dixit's success. Her acting showed immense versatility from Qayamath se Qayamath Tak, Bol Radha Bol, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Aaina, Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar ke, Yess Boss, Ishq, Mr & Mrs. Khiladi, I Am, etc. I have seen her doing both tragic and comic roles very smoothly and successfully. Despite being director's fav during the 90s and performing in various roles opposite the 3 Big Khans, she never got the recognition she deserved. Would love to say that she is my "favourite" actress of all times. - Raveena Tandon - she proved herself in few movies like Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Aks & Daman. I believe directors haven't done full justice to her talent. - Gracy Singh - she was an actress who came, conquered everything and suddenly vanished. She was a promising newcomer when she first did the role of a village girl in an oscar nominated movie opposite Aamir Khan in Laagan. She equally proved herself in Armaan & Munna Bhai MBBS, two blockbusters opposite Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt (alongside the great director Rajkumar Hirani) - Amrita Rao - is one actress I feel that has GREAT potential, but "directors" are completely to "blame" in this case. I feel Amrita Rao's acting in Main Hoon Nah, Ishq Vishq Pyaar Vyaar, Masti, Vivav, etc proved us her capability. However, after doing her first role in Ishq Vishq as a calm girl, Amrita Rao was most of the time offered for roles of a soft spoken woman. Thus, except Main Hoon Nah she never got the chance to prove her versatility or get out of the box. Directors should have offered her more "various" types of roles, instead of just potraying her as the "sweet" & naive girl. - Ayesha Takia - do not know what happened to her these days after getting married, as I expected a lot more from her. I loved her in movies like "Dor," "Sunday," "Wanted," etc! - Bhagyashree and Mahima Chaudhry - The reason why I have combined two of these actresses together is because I can only remember them for 1/2 movies. Bhagyashree is always remembered by everyone in "Maine Pyaar Kiya," and Mahima Chaudhry is always remembered as the lead actress of "Pardes" & "Khiladi 420." After doing these, we hardly saw these two actresses in other potential movies. Directors should have offered them more leading actress's position that they deserve with their amazing acting skills. - Sushmita Sen - All of us hoped this actress to be as popular as "Aishwarya Rai," as both of them entered the beauty pageant's competition for Miss. Universe together. Both of them were equally beautiful and had an amazing personality. But perhaps Aish's dancing skills & acting in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam conquered a lot of people's heart. I believe Sushmita Sen could have been offered for more "action roles," as she can easily fit into those roles of an action heroine. - Rimi Sen - I loved her in Phir Hera Pheir, Golmaal & Hungama! Hence, I expected a lot more from her rather than just playing supporting roles in the Dhoom sequence! - Urmila Matondkar - Another extremely beautiful "versatile" actress who definitely deserved more awards & recognitions for proving her amazing acting skills! We have seen her in various roles including - tragic, comic, thriller, horror, etc! These are just my opinions, do add your own point of views as well. Extremey sorry if I have missed anyone. Thank You so much for taking your time to read my post. On 8th February I also made a post about the most underrated actors of Bollywood. Some of you added Emraan Hashmi, Govinda, Irfan Khan & Abhishek Bachchan. I am sorry for forgetting these particular actors and I agree with you that these 4 deserves more recognition.

And what about Abhi who have gotten million chances, and he has shown zero success.
i want to see more of tabu, manisha and urmila....i also think mahie gill is also very underrated...she is so talented.....
i think madhuri is very overrated i seriously dont understand what so special about her!
aishwarya rai : becoz in today times there is still a general perception in bollywood that she isnt a good actress but a pretty/good face, when uptill 2012 she has given many worthy films in terms of ''her own'' acting skills to bollywood.
Juhi Chawla deserves bigger and better roles
Juhi chawla she deserves more than what she got
Juhi chawla she desreves more than what she got
@pinkvilla_boy...
that is the point of my post.... that not every good actresses in bollywood can make it to the top despite their better acting skills.
There are 3 types of actresses in bollywood -
- One who looks good and acts good, these are the actresses who gets claimed both by the critics & the audience
- One who looks good but cannot act, some of them gets popular like Katrina Kaif (who ofcourse got popular bcoz of Salman Khan, her mixed-race looks & her "HARD WORK" not to forget). While some of them cannot get in to the top, for example - Sushmita Sen..maybe luck does not favour them.
- Then, we have those actresses who acts good but doesn't look good. They can NEVER become "STARS" but they are rather "ACTORS."
none
I DON'T THINK RAVEENA IS UNDERRATED
@ Fiza_Khan
i totally respect your opinion but what i am saying is whether we call
luck or sir name in the end it s all about making it to the top and that's what matter
for me katrina is not good actress but she is also at the top because that's what audience
want to see and in the end that s gonna count if according to you its the name tag "kapoor"
which made both the directors & the actors to give Kareena K chances over & over again to prove herself
than what hapnned in eash deol case and also in tanisha kajol s younger sister?
i guess other than this topic each and everyone of us make their own luck and through hardwork
and talent :)
For me it should be konkana.
Even though I think Kareena shows amazing acting skills in movies like Bodyguard, Jab We Met, she was one of those actresses who acted HORRIBLE in her debut movies (like main prem ki deewani hoon)...its the name tag "kapoor" which made both the directors & the actors to give her chances over & over again to prove herself.

CAN'T SAY THIS BETTER..totally agree with the last line.if others were given a same chance they all would be in top today just like this overrated kapoor girl..Im sure even Amisha Patel would be in top..in a way i find she is a lot better then kareena.
at Fiza_Khan: I disagree with you when you say that Juhi and Manisha equla to Sri and Mad in acting. In acting Sridevi is the most versatile, Manisha gives deep performances, Juhi gives light bubbly performances, Madhuri meh!!
In acting talent priority I would rate them in this order out of 10
1- Sridevi: 9/10
2- Manisha Koirala: 8/10
3- Juhi Chawla: 7/10
4- Madhuri Dixit: 5/10
Dancing order will be different. but for me dance doesn't matter. I watch movies to watch performances and I fast forward the songs
I don't think Juhi Chawla is underrated. Juhi is an actress who is popular and loved by all no matter who your favorite is, Juhi is always loved. For me Juhi Chawla is the Sandra Bullock of India. She is very funny, very sweet both on and off camera. Maybe she didn't get the same attention as the other biggies at her time but thats it.
Actually I think with the entrance of Sridevi since the 1980s until the mid 1990s no actress could make it really big like her, they could get recognition but not that big recognition. You have Jaya Prada, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Manisha Koirala and many more. The Maximum they could get as being an alternative to the No.1 or the next No.1 after Sri.
As for the underrated I think of three names: Manisha Koirala, Tabu and Urmila Matondkar. Though my preference is for Manisha as she gives very good performances when there is an opportunity but filmmakers did not exploit her talent.
Aditi Rao of London Paris New York reminds me of Gracy Singh
manisha , juhi , sonali, mahima
i love Nandita Das
the most versatile yet underrated
nice post :-)
i agree with most of your choices.....
and @ mon-2012-06-11-18:00
lol... i agree her kurkure adds are hilarious
Manisha, Nandita, Tabu, Konkona have all had acclaimed performances, but if they have not been more successful maybe they were taking work at their own pace and on their own terms. Or maybe they didn't get offers that excited them. Isha Koppikar I think was underrated & I agree with Angelicous about Antara Mali. Also I hope Amrita Rao gets some good offers soon, she has a lot of potential IMO. Gracy Singh has worked in some terrible B grade films and I as a result I think she has ruined her career. Anyone seen Deshdrohi? *shudder*
yep I feel amrita is one underated actress
Divya Bharti wasn't an underrated actress, it's just that fate wasn't with her.
@Pinkvilla Boy - I agree that some of them lacked something, because in Bollywood people also consider LOOKS more. I am not saying tht acting is not important, definitely the top actresses know a lot of acting, but the top actresses needs to look GOOD too - hence they should both be good looking & know acting. Btw, Kareena is an overrated actress in my pov and so is Katrina Kaif.....
Another reason why Kareena is famous is because these days most of the actresses act "shit," compared to those "shit" actresses Kareena & PC acts a lot better. Hence, people do not have much "choice" as they did during 60s - 90s. During the 60s - 90s all the actresses were amazingly good. But, now we only have Kareena, PC, Vidya Balan, Asin, Mahi Gill, Anushka Sharma.....then we have a BUNCH of overrated actresses like Deepika, Sonam, Katrina, Nargis Fakhri, etc.......(now Diana Penty is also adding in).
I also suggest some of you to read this. People who are saying they were "in the limelight" before and achieved loads of awards - I DID mention this in my post as well. I mentioned that in Bollywood "masala" movies are more famous, hence people like Konkona or Nandita Sen WERE never that much LIKED by the audience, even though they were critically praised. Another thing to mention is that Juhi & Manisha were "famous" and had the chance to act opposite great actors, they DID prove their ability....but despite their acting talent being almost EQUAL to Madhuri or Sridevi or to Aishwarya's beauty, they never were SO Much in the lime light unlike those 3 actresses (I also mentioned this in my post)...
Thank you to the people who liked my post :)
Btw....just to add - I TOTALLY agree to those who are mentioning Urmila's name! I think she definitely is an underrated actress & even a dancer.... :) Extremely sorry for forgetting her name

Madhuri Dixit is the most overrated actress.
I can tell who is most overrated.....do I really need to name then name.....
Schumuck , you are so full of it.
Big B needs someone to clean his s,,t.
Manisha koiral and Juhi chawala no ways are underated. At there times they did so many films and been in limlight for years and still have thousands of fans.and konkana sen too did good in her sphere of acting, she just has almost stop working after her marriage.
I think many of them such as konkona sen, tabu and manisha won a slew of awards during their time and their talent has always been talked about! One of the most underrated actresses of all time is Juhi Chawla. Her Kurkure ads are hilarious and she has donned numerous guises such as old man, midget, old punjabi lady etc etc. But when people like Aamir khan does it, it is applauded! Her films have all been wonderful to watch and I do believe she deserves many more awards than what she has received.
Sushmita Sen, she was wonderful in Samay and has a good comic timing too.
@ Fiza_Khan
nice post :) but in my opinion none of them are underrated
they all had the taste of success till they deserved it after that there s
always someone in the line to take you position its up to each any every actress
how she takes her career how she choose her films everything and actress should be a
package she should look good dance well can emote a certain character
if you have talent no one can stop u from being at the top
position All the actresses who have been at the top position be it like hema malini,
sri devi, madhuri, kajol, aishwarya, kareena had and have
everything in them to be at the top position so if you can t be at no 1 that means
you lacking at something or your time span of success has been completed
I would add Urmila matongakar, she was amazing actress. See her performance in variety of roles : pinjatr, ek haseena thi, naina, bhoot.
I would call Madhuri Dixit the most overrated actress. She rules in peoples hearts just because her 1000 watt smile and dances. I never found her a good actress. All her roles were same : masala type movies and she is the strong female protagonist, mouthing some dialogues to the villain a typical desi role.
She failed horribly at box office when she actually tried to act : movies like sangeet/ pukar/lajja/mrityudand etc where she had something else to do apart from dancing
