The Most Underrated Actresses of Bollywood
This post is based on the most underrated actresses of Bollywood. In this case, I mean all those actresses who had the capability to gain awards and recognition, but despite their amazing acting skills they are often missed out from various lists or do not even get signed for movies. I will say the director is to blame in some areas - - Konkona Sen Sharma - her acting has a sense of "reality," which always makes me feel that I am watching a movie based on true life story. For example - Mr & Mrs. Iyer. Unfortunately, for a long time she is not getting any splendid roles to prove her capability of acting. I still like her as an actress, because her purpose is to "ACT," rather than getting all those attention. - Isha Koppikar - Some of you might disagree with me in this case. The reason why I feel she is underrated is because I think she is most of the time asked to do "supporting roles," but despite her roles being so minor, I feel she shows immense talent in her acting skills. For example - Pinjar. Movies where she had the chance to be the lead actress, either had a bad role or a horrible plot/screen play. I think if she was given the chance to do good movies with great directors and an amazing major role, she could have proved herself to be a very talented actress - Nandita Das - I feel happy that Nandita Das has won lots of awards and recognitions that she totally deserved. In a way, she is not much seen in those "masala" movies of Bollywood (which are unfortunately more popular), and good thing is that she herself is not interested in those "item" movies. Her movies usually has a message to the audience that potrays the "real life" problems. Her movies as an actress include - Fire, 1947 Earth, Bawandar, Provoked, etc. She has equally proved us to be an amazing director in Firaaq. - Lara Dutta - I feel this woman is talented, beautiful and ofcourse very intelligent as well! Loved her in movies like No Entry, Billu Barber, Housefull, Masti and Don (1 & 2). These movies show us her versatility! I also feel that instead of Katrina Kaif she could have been a better choice for Dhoom 3 (apology to the Beautiful Katrina's fans) - Manisha Koraila - what an immense talent she is! Especially in Khamoshi! Loved her from the beginning. I cannot blame the director this time, because I feel most of the directors gave her full justice. I am happy that she also won awards for proving her amazing acting skils in various roles & movies. However, I feel she has less recognition compared to other actresses like Madhuri Dixit. - Tabu - Who can forget her in the movie Chandni Bar? I almost cried watching that movie, her acting was so genuine and real! I feel Tabu is a very versatile actress because she has performed in other types of roles as well, for ex - Virasaat, Chachi 420, Hera Pheri, Astitva, etc. She truly deserves a lot more recognition! Perhaps she should also make a good come back to hindi movies! - Sonali Bendre - another Gorgeous, Glamorous & Graceful actress, who despite her amazing looks and charm could not make it big in Bollywood! - Shilpa Shetty - The "Dhadkan" Girl, truly deserved to win everyone's dhadkan. Her acting in Life in a Metro was equally good as well. It was only when she won Big Brother & married Raj Kundra, that caused her to be in the limelight. - Juhi Chawla - She is one actress who was always compared to Madhuri Dixit's success. Her acting showed immense versatility from Qayamath se Qayamath Tak, Bol Radha Bol, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Aaina, Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar ke, Yess Boss, Ishq, Mr & Mrs. Khiladi, I Am, etc. I have seen her doing both tragic and comic roles very smoothly and successfully. Despite being director's fav during the 90s and performing in various roles opposite the 3 Big Khans, she never got the recognition she deserved. Would love to say that she is my "favourite" actress of all times. - Raveena Tandon - she proved herself in few movies like Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Aks & Daman. I believe directors haven't done full justice to her talent. - Gracy Singh - she was an actress who came, conquered everything and suddenly vanished. She was a promising newcomer when she first did the role of a village girl in an oscar nominated movie opposite Aamir Khan in Laagan. She equally proved herself in Armaan & Munna Bhai MBBS, two blockbusters opposite Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt (alongside the great director Rajkumar Hirani) - Amrita Rao - is one actress I feel that has GREAT potential, but "directors" are completely to "blame" in this case. I feel Amrita Rao's acting in Main Hoon Nah, Ishq Vishq Pyaar Vyaar, Masti, Vivav, etc proved us her capability. However, after doing her first role in Ishq Vishq as a calm girl, Amrita Rao was most of the time offered for roles of a soft spoken woman. Thus, except Main Hoon Nah she never got the chance to prove her versatility or get out of the box. Directors should have offered her more "various" types of roles, instead of just potraying her as the "sweet" & naive girl. - Ayesha Takia - do not know what happened to her these days after getting married, as I expected a lot more from her. I loved her in movies like "Dor," "Sunday," "Wanted," etc! - Bhagyashree and Mahima Chaudhry - The reason why I have combined two of these actresses together is because I can only remember them for 1/2 movies. Bhagyashree is always remembered by everyone in "Maine Pyaar Kiya," and Mahima Chaudhry is always remembered as the lead actress of "Pardes" & "Khiladi 420." After doing these, we hardly saw these two actresses in other potential movies. Directors should have offered them more leading actress's position that they deserve with their amazing acting skills. - Sushmita Sen - All of us hoped this actress to be as popular as "Aishwarya Rai," as both of them entered the beauty pageant's competition for Miss. Universe together. Both of them were equally beautiful and had an amazing personality. But perhaps Aish's dancing skills & acting in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam conquered a lot of people's heart. I believe Sushmita Sen could have been offered for more "action roles," as she can easily fit into those roles of an action heroine. - Rimi Sen - I loved her in Phir Hera Pheir, Golmaal & Hungama! Hence, I expected a lot more from her rather than just playing supporting roles in the Dhoom sequence! - Urmila Matondkar - Another extremely beautiful "versatile" actress who definitely deserved more awards & recognitions for proving her amazing acting skills! We have seen her in various roles including - tragic, comic, thriller, horror, etc! These are just my opinions, do add your own point of views as well. Extremey sorry if I have missed anyone. Some of you added Emraan Hashmi, Govinda, Irfan Khan & Abhishek Bachchan. I am sorry for forgetting these particular actors and I agree with you that these 4 deserves more recognition.

Juhi Chaowla is not underrated.She is another overrated actress.She only can act meaningless roles like in the film Yes Boss,RBGG,Duplicate,Ishq etc etc and in QSPT,HHRPK Aamir did better acting than her.She is lucky to get so much fame which she hardly deserves.Ok i'm not talking about her.According to me all the actresses of 90s and today are inferior to Manisha Koirala.She is true actress whth all quality.She excelled in all kind of roles.She is truly called the Meena Kumari of Bollywood in the 90s.Remember all in DTPH Karishma Kapoor's role was at first given to her but she rejected to be second fiddle to Madhuri.MANISHA KOIRALA IS GREAT.

U are kidding right? She is one of the most overrated actress we have. She is called the most successful married actress although none of her movies (after marriage) without the Khans have done good business (Hote hote Pyar ho gaya, Raju Chacha, some double role movie of hers which i dont remember with Sunil Shetty, U me aur hum, WRF,etc). If you think she's underrated because she's not offered the solo role,unusual kinda movies like Vidya then you are wrong, she herself told in an interview with Rajeev Masand that she does not see any entertainment factor in such movies and has rejected a lot of small budget non glam movies on different subjects.
Kajol is not underrated but her contemporaries like Urmila, Tabu, Juhi are

overrated today : katrina, deepka
underrated today: kangana, sonam
Juhi was very unlucky in the 90s as she was the actress who featured in maximum number of delayed films like Safari, Karobar, Gang,One two ka four,etc .Some of her movies never released like the the one in which she was playing a mentally challenged woman i think it was titled Kashmakash

I am a huge fan of Juhi and almost all the actresses of 90s. I think she had her reasons for rejecting the films you mentioned and IMO most of the time she was right except for rejecting Mrityudand.Others like
Raja Hindustani: Over The Top and loud movie.I guess she rejected it because of the long smooching scene.Had Juhi accepted it the smooching scene would have been still longer(Remember how every director made Juhi-Aamir kiss in all their films?Dharmesh Darshan would have been the BAAP of them and exploited her)
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander - glad she rejected it as she has done lots of such roles
Jeet: The film was delayed and she had dates problem (according to her old interview)
Dil to Pagal hai: As a Juhi fan at least i never want to see her playing a second lead to her contemporaray Madhuri Dixit. Also i read a very old interview of Juhi where she said the story was completely different when it was offered to her.So not her mistake
KKHH: NO WAY. This is the first time i read it was offered to her. Why on earth should she be doing second lead roles even if it was offered. I know even Madz has played second lead to Manisha and Ash but the roles matched her talent.I mean kkhh was perfect for a new girl not for Juhi who had been doing films for over a decade by then and there was nothing challenging in it.
Viraasat: She had done enough bechaari naari type roles by then
After her fall-out with Aamir,the only significant role an Aamir Khan starrer had for an actress was Mann and again it had nothing new or challenging to offer her.But Manisha was great in it.
On the other hand i wish she had not done a lot of films which had nothing to offer her like Deewana Mastana, Saat Rang Ke Sapne,Loafer, Naajayaz,etc and spoilt her stardom.
I think Kajol s STILL 'underrated'. She is just toooo talented!!

I agree that Juhi chawla is so tally underrated. whn i watch her films like 3 deewarien, my brother nikhil I go all nostalgic thinking y these movies and performances weren't acclaimed. well in fact she was brilliant in her way initial movies like Raju ban gaya gentleman and movies like One 2 ka four too. One thing abt Bollywood is that a good story and good performances only isnt enough to make it work, there shud be a huge hype too. If there's enough hype even really dumb and uncreative movies too get acclaimed.
But there's another thing abt Juhi Chawla. Its not completely fair to say she didn't get the opportunity. If u look at her rejection list, that's a list worth of a career. she had bad a judgement abt scripts and weird other reasons to reject roles. Like when Dharmesh Dharshan was interest in her personally she rejected his Raja hindustani.After her fall-out with aamir she rejected every film she ws offered with him. If you think of films like Dil toh pagal hain, Raja hindustani, Jeet, Hero no.1 Juhi rejected those r the films made Karishma kapoor a lead actress. these films must be Karishma's claim for her entire career. And again from her rejected list films like Judaai, mrityudand had good characters for her to play. but she didnt take the risk. she was continuously offered good films during her peak but she choose disasters like Baandish, Najayaz where she had nothing at all to perform and rejected good films. I read smwhere that she was repeatedly offered the supporting role in DTPH and she refused. She was briefly considered for Rani's role in KKHH too. Juhi just didnt have that go getter attitude, that drive to go out there and get whet she deserved. Where as actresses like Madhuri, kajol and the rest were always in business. they knew how to utilize ppl around them well.
What about Raima Sen........She is brilliant.
@Anon! Rlly? i was unaware! But I think Sridevi received loads of love from the public, she did great movies and everyone (including big stars) think of her as the female Amitabh! I think that gives her a lot! :)
Yes,i definitely agree with you above list,as they all are highly underrated.But in my opinion you should have mentioned Sridevi's name at the top of this list.I think she is the most underrated actress till date.I mean,if you calculate the ratio of how great Sridevi is as a complete actress and what are the honours she has got till date,then she is the most underrated actress.Look at Madhuri,Kajol,Rekha,etc.they are overloaded with so much accolades but look at India's First Female Superstar,Sridevi,she is not even honoured with the Padmashree Award till this time.

- Then, we have those actresses who acts good but doesn't look good. They can NEVER become "STARS" but they are rather "ACTORS."

I would like to know where would you put Juhi Chawla?IMO she looks good, acts superbly, critics have always praised her work and of course she is loved by the audience.Forget Madhuri,she could not equal karishma or a kajol in terms of popularity and stardom especially within the industry.I believe she deserved one BLACK or a LAMHE to say the least
Juhi Chawla because she deserved much more than what she got..She definitely deserved bigger and better roles..Can you believe she wasn't even nominated for best actress for her performance in Aaina but Madhuri was nominated for Khalnayak in the same year!!!Also i think her performance in Yes Boss was a masterpiece , her expressions, the way she emoted was too good to be compared to Madhuri's DTPH.. But as usual the award jury's fav Madhuri walked away with the fimfare for DTPH
I dont agree about Manisha koirala.She is another good actress but i believe she is mostly good in serious roles like Dil Se, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Khamoshi, Bombay, Mann,etc..I dont want to be mean to her but i haven't really seen her playing a fun loving bubbly girl convincingly.Also her choice of films and the producers especially post 2000 were pathetic.For more than a decade she hasn't given a single hit( or at least an impressive performance in a good film)
Sonali bendre: Yes she was always underrated by the industry people..I have always liked her acting n never felt she was bad in any movie.She was a good actress,glamorous n graceful and should have got her due. I hated seeing her playing a second fiddle to aishwarya, rani,etc and that too when they were new to the industry
Amrita Rao: underrated definitely but i think she should have taken some risks and experimented more with her roles because her contemporaries like Kareena, priyanka,bipasha,etc were always trying to do something different and gave her a tough competition. But then whatever movies she has done, she was always convincing for me unlike the other actresses
Juhi Chawla is the most underrated actress ever.. She had angelic beauty,was/is simply brilliant in acting,could dance gracefully,could make good onscreen pair with most of the heroes she worked with,had the cleanest public image(i believe she is the nicest celebrity ever).. Then what the hell went wrong? Why couldn't the industry notice her talent?.. I dont think its fair to blame the audience here because she still has a huge fan following.Its the directors and the media who always underrated her and the saddest part is that the directors who were really fond of her and viceversa like David Dhawan ,Mahesh Bhatt,etc offered her only the hero-centric films like Loafer, Deewana Mastana, Naajayaz,Duplicate and never did full justice to her talent.
Tabu, Urmila, Nandita das etc are all acclaimed actors.. The media call them ''the real actors'' and their directors have always done justice to their talent.The movies they all did might not be super successful but at least the directors they worked with never let them down.So i dont think they are underrrated

Manisha Koirala of course!
She did not have Bollywood family connections and she didn't give a damn about sucking up to them so she was never taken seriously. Also she was never that ambitious and money/fame hungry. She just wanted to live life on her her own terms which she did! Anyway....she'll never be forgotten because of Dil Se, Bombay, Khamoshi. She will go down in history as one of the most luminous actors. So what if she drank and had a good old time. It's better to do what you want then get old and pretend be young like Sri Devi, Rani, Madhuri and Kajol who have been dressing really young and trying to look hip and happening.
Manya has done all that and now she's happy being her age and acting for art's sake .

My point is that Sushmita acted fab in few movies, while in few movies her acting was horrible....now her talent is EQUAL tot Aishwarya, Kareena Kapoor and definitely btr than Katrina Kaif (i m not including dancing skills over here)...she is also VERY beautiful. Despite this, she never gets the chance, which other actresses does.

I do agree with you about Sushmita over-acting in a few movies. But it is a fact that in those where she has acted well, she's clearly shown that she's superb.

Also - the reason why I said tht Sushmita sen Looks GOOD but cant act tht much is bcoz in few of her movies she did an amazing job, while in some of her movies she over-acted! My point is that she should have given chances, because thr r loads of actresses who are EXTREMELY beautiful and cannot act AT ALL, but still gets chances over & over again! Then why not her? because she can act at least btr than them & also looks gorgeous! Look at Aish, Aish in some of her movies acted amazingly well, while in few of her movies Aish's acting was horrible, but directors still gave her chances!...

Konkona and Tabu happen to be the most underrated actresses of the industry. Just because they don't dance around the trees prevents them from being the apples of the audiences' eyes...
lara dutta, Manisha Koraila and Konkona Sen Sharma are the most underrated actress :(
