Fair Skin-A problem in bollywood or in Pinkvilla?

I often read Pinkvilla articles and comments, and I often find a lot of users claim that Katrina, Nargis etc are only popular because of their fair skin. These comments can be quite harsh, with some people claiming that these actresses don't belong in bollywood, or that bollywood worships "goris" etc.

I personally feel that these people have a chip on their shoulder. It's on thing to discuss an issue rationally, it's another to accuse bollywood of being racist just because a few actresses are fair.

While I acknowledge the fair skin issue is unfortunately prevelant in some South Asian societies, I don't think that's so much the case in Bollywood anymore.
The thing is, a lot of people do like dusky beauties in bollywood too...how did Bipasha make it so big back in her jism days? Definitely not her acting! It's because people find her hot...just like they do Nargis...what does skin colour have to do with it?

There are a lot of dusky girls big in bollywood, and in entertainment sectors around India...Vidhya, kajol, rani, priyanka, bipasha, Deepika...and some of them are considered beautiful...so why are people still thinking bollywood is only obsessed with fair skin? times are changing.

The past Miss Indias and beyond are not "fair skinned"...Diana Hayden, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta, Priyanka, Aishwarya (in my personal opinion)...I mean if there was an obsession with fair skin...wouldn't a Diya Mirza be crowned over Lara and Priyanka?

And who defines "desi beauty"? Some people here claim that "bollywood doesn't like actresses who look Indian" Just because a girl doesn't have big eyes and big lips and dark skin...she no longer looks Indian? Why stereotype the look? There are all kinds of people in India.

People need to think before they say Nargis and Katrina have only made it big because of their fair skin despite lack of talent...because if that was the case...then what happened Isha Sharvani, Sneha Ullal? They were VERY fair skinned and Sneha had light eyes...even in the case of actors...why is neil nitin mukesh not as successful as other actors?

What's even more perplexing is...nobody in bollywood looks white...no actors or actresses. Have some of you seen white people? Why are we all picking on each other for different shades of brown. Katrina is fair but does not look white...if it was white bollywood wanted then Yana Gupta would be on a pedestal.

These are just some of my thoughts...because I find it ignorant and offensive when people have nothing else to say about an actress and start picking on her skin tone...especially when there are so many successful examples otherwise...

@rddler- you don't have to be someone's PR to talk good about someone..if u are good u talk good and think good if u r pathetic u think pathetic and talk pathetic like u

Anonymous's picture

@arina- I completely agree with you. It's the people who visit this site are some of the most harsh/cruel people. Not just about fair skin people but if you look at any video and compare its dislike to that same video on YouTube. The like dislike ratio on YouTube would be 80:20 and here it would be 20:80. I really dont where does this kind of people come from. Or may be pink villa just approves this kind of comments only... I don't know if this comment of mine would be approved.

thank you for writing this on here..... cause some poeple really do go over the board on some comments. there is having opinions and etc. but some are to be kept to your self. have some respect.

Its only in Pinkvilla I guess cox I have never came across such ignorant cruel people in my life.So much negativity here..Its one thing to give your opinion but bashing actors for their skin color and their personal life is so ignorant.I like this article and I totally agree with you

LEt us face it, criticism against Katrina is SHE CANT ACT.
Indians have done everythoing with ehr, given her main role, side role, comedy role - she has come flying out of all those roles as a non actress!!!!

Anonymous's picture

All dusky women in Bollywood are made to look fair! Bipasha was dusky only in her earlier films like Ajnabee, Jism, Raaz etc. where she either played grey shade characters or unconventional heroine. Look how her skin is lightened in other films and ads. Compare her ads from 90s when she was just a model, to her ads now (after becoming an actress) and you'll see how much they lighten her skin tone!

Even Kajol, MD, Sri, Rani, Preity - all of them who have wheatish or olive complexion are painted totally white nowadays! Kajol is not at all as fair she was shown in MNIK or UMAH.

It's not just about film stars. Nowadays even TV actors' complexion is lightened to make them look fairer. If someone is playing a villager or streetside guy he/she is at best made to look brown but not as dark as such people could be in real life! Heck! Even Sunny & Bobby Deols' complexion was lightened in Apne & YPD and their hair were shown brownish - not black! Everyone is made to look like a foreigner or an NRI. Actual Indian look is out of the picture now!

It is DEFINITELY a problem which pervades Indian media and culture! And thanks to media & fairness creams adverts, this obsession with fairness is growing and has spread to men also!

Pregnant women in India are made to drink all sorts of concoctions to somehow ensure that the baby is fair skinned - ''gora chitta''. Marriages are decided on whether the girl is fair or not - education and everything else can take a backseat.

Katrina and Nargis are indeed liked more due to the gori mem factor.

In reality there is NO

the question is why bollywood never hired any dark skinned foreign actress like dark brown latina or African female in their lead role, why its always somebody white like Babara Mori? there are so many beautiful dark skinned mexican women who could easily play her role in movie Kites? , so I guess white skin rules the bollywood even dark skinned actresses have to wear white paint get airbrushed white to them to stay at bollywood.

Are you Nargis PR..LOL

Bips played in Jism as a 'shady role'.. the un-trustable woman... it was not a heroine type role.
Same with Priyanka- shady roles at the start (Kareena played the good main roles to her foil).
they work their way up.. from playing bad to decently good .. even today, these dusky ones play vamps mainly.

and the 'dusky' women who are glam often wear lighter makeup on screen.

Kat and Nargis, et all are pretty, no doubt. the problem is there is no.. NONE.. really really dark actress who is considered pretty and gets normal heroine (not vamp) roles. not talking about Pri or Bips with their 'lighter pancakes on screen'.. or the duskier actreses who can act but are not glam (no names mentioned)- & even then lightened..

oh, there is the Freida who dares to show her real colors.. and gets bashed for it.. laughed and mocked. but even she's not the really dark deep chocolate bronze type we're talking about.

oh pllllleeazze. talking really deep dark brown of the rustic village type belle.

name one actress heroine who even comes close. name one. you can't. and yet, that spectacular deep dark brown is all over India.

Flower, this is a stupid article...most of the criticism against Katrina and Nargis is that they can't ACT. Before rockstar, i always thought that nargis had very exotic looks which BTW had nothing to do with her SKIN COLOR but upon seeing rockstar she is and i am sure everybody agrees is a terrible actress. Katrina has lasted in the industry for over a decade and she can't act to save her life. How is it fair (pardon the pun), when There are a millions of other actresses who are out there struggling to get a break while these girls enjoy um-teem number of chances and movies before they can get a success or do something that remotely resembles acting. So the big question is WHY ARE THEY HERE? Lets take katrina for example , she is not beautiful in any sense of the word, she may be 'sexy' but so is 'malaika arora'. Well Katrina has a long nose , she has had this fixed unsuccessfully, but still she censors all the side photo-shots of herself, she constantly has cosmetic fillers injected to her lips, has hair extensions, false eyelashes to look the way she does and has worked immensely 'hard' on her body to make it look the way it does, she is no natural beauty AND she CAN'T ACT.So lets see,she CAN'T ACT, she is on the average side of good looking. The only reasons why she has gotten the number of chances that she has is that is she is as WHITE as chalk and since she has black hair and so can pass off as Indian. The only other reason that differentiates her from other fair skinned girls who didn't make it is that she is willing to do an um-teem number of vulgar and demeaning 'ITEM NUMBERS'. Please don't give me 'Worked Hard' bit because that is also true with all struggling and current actress. Also it does'nt hurt to play a guy like violin , yes i mean Salman, she never had any intention of being with him in mumbai or ever marrying him, he is putty in her hands, and he plays to her every tune, she has huge homes in london and will be happy to move there after nicely milking Salman's kindness and leave him to be the lonely bachelor and after wasting the prime time of his life.About Nargis, i like her and she has 'exotic' looks and so do a lot of other models but she CANT ACT and all of you have to agree with me, but sadly 'good looking' is all that she will be, she is a model and no actress period. What your stupid article did not mention is that there are lots of fair actress who we don't criticize for their acting just because they are fair, example Madhuri, Kareena etc. You are therefore wrong and this article is badly written.

I think most the ppl that u listed r successful because of networking they did. Fair skin is not the only reason but it's a bonus, it puts them ahead of others in the game. The certain look is the first thing that the directors/producers look for in their stars, not if they can act or not (if it's an art house production then yes talent matters). I think that ur looking at things with rose colored glasses, bollywood has actually glamorized fair skin as something to be coveted. Actually, fair skin is more desired than it probably was 20 or so years ago, bc of globolization and being connected to other types of medias/pop culture thanks to the internet. Have u looked at the changing youth culture in India which tries to mimick what it sees in popular western tv shows that r aired regularly in India now? Not to digress from the point, fair skin doesn't automatically gurantee sucess but it's def a plus and u won't have to struggle as much to find oppertunities. Now if these opportunities will bear the fruit of success if another matter entirely.

Let us look at the actresses today:

Katrina, Nargis, Jaqueline, Giselli, Amy - all foreigners

Kareena, Kangana, Anushka, Aishwarya - all super fair

Sonam, Priyanka, Bipasha- normal Indian skin but called 'dusky' and forced to lighten their skin tone with makeup because it is considered unattractive

Vidya- Traditional beauty and phenomenal actress but called a Behenji because she looks Indian and not exotic

Bollywood is undoubtedly racist. And its not just actress. Its also all the firang backup dancers and item girls, all the fairness creams that actresses endorse and all the magazines that make brown skinned actresses look super fair through photoshop. The racism is everywhere-in Pinvilla, in Bollywood and in Indian society.

every Indian wants to be fair and every white person wants to be tanned, so yes the grass always seems green on the other side...

This is an utterly ignorant post.

So Fair skin is not a problem in the real world? Right! So then why are fairness creams such a big market? Why is it considered perfectly acceptable for an actress to endorse a product that says only pale skin is attractive and that dark skin is undesirable? Why is Fair & Lovely so popular? Why do matrimonial advertisements specify fair skin?

So fair skin is not a problem in Bollywood? Right! So then why do actresses like Priyanka and Sonam feel the need to wear skin lightening makeup? Why are the sexy female backup dancers always white while the male dancers are always Indian? Why is it that Vidya Balan is considered dusky even though she is quite light skinned for an Indian?

So Nargis is not hired for her skin? Right! The why is she even here? Her acting was universally criticized, she cannot speak Hindi and she doesn't look Indian. You can go to the Mexican film industry, the Chinese, the Japanese. No where else will European and American women be passed off as locals. Its unsuitable, unconvincing casting. Why do you think Amy, Jacqueline and all the other girls make news if not for their skin tone? Why does Bollywood never hire foreign men?

Are you just blind or do you just choose to ignore the obvious racism and hatred of dusky, tradional looking women in Bollywood and in Indian society?

i dont understand everytime theres a discussion about fair skin in bollywood, they always centre around katrina. Shes brown, light brown at best in real life. kareena, kangna, kalki etc ..are the fair/light skinned actresses.

Anonymous's picture

You have voiced my opinion. We should have pride in ourselves. I'm not saying that there isn't racism out there but if we keep thinking backwards then all the strides that we have made thus far are for not. Be proud of yourselves and who you are. Don't hate!

but the problem is..these "dusky" beauty actress...like priyanka, bipasha, deepika....are shown as to have white skin in the movies, there is so much light and makeup tat these actress looks more white than katrina...so when u say Bollywood not obsessed with white skin..its wrong...i never seen bipashas or even deepikas real skin color on screen...they look so white....so y does movie directors want to show these actress "white" rather than there own skin color..and these actresses dont oppose to these changes because they be out of work....

Anonymous's picture

For the same reason India has products like fair and lovely and I am sure many many more that I don't know about. Most actresses that are tanned like Lara, Priyanka and Bips have more of an southern exotic look (southern i mean South America) As for Kajol and Konkana who look totally Indian -> when they did join the industry they were just never considered that hot until they proved they are actually good actresses and then they were recognized :-O On the other hand you got Karishma Kapoor when she joined the film industry being as fair as she was - she was just nasty looking. So I do think it's more the 'look' the actress has than the color of her skin. Kat is pretty face as is Nargis, Bollywood wants glamour beautiful girls light tanned ...exotic looking chicks..as for the ones that look like a desi .... prove u can act b4 we think ur beautiful...do i think it's fair not really....dialogue from the film beta 'no matter how dark the groom he always wants a fair skin bride' :-O
