Manisha Koirala at the peak of her career
There's something about Manisha Koirala that has always amazed me. How can someone with so much raw talent, natural beauty and such an authentic personality peak at such a young age? Many speculate that it could be alcohol, drugs or bad relationships, but the truth is no one will ever know happened and why. Regardless of what took place in Manisha's personal life that caused her to stay away from films (or cause filmmakers to stay away from her, which is also possible) what you can't take away from her is her brilliant body of work. From Khamoshi and 1942 Love Story, to Bombay and Dil Se, Manisha put her soul into each role and it left us rooting for her and wanting to protect her both on screen and in real life. You also can't take away her beauty. No matter how many years it's been. To me she was the embodiment of a sensuous, mysterious woman who at the same time seemed so innocent and pure. She was someone both your grandma would like and your guy friends would drool over. There was something about her ethereal face, her glowing skin and that smile, which is what most people remember about her. Her smile started at her eyes and ended at her lips. It was so radiant you couldn't help but be convinced that whatever was making her smile that way that was true and good. Something tells me we haven't yet seen the last of Manisha. Here's hoping she'll dazzle us again on the big screen someday soon! Until then enjoy these photos of Manisha at her prime.

my god....those wer da days....she was jus so fantastic.....
what a beauty....wht an actress.
Overrated actress and ordinary beauty
you are the most beautiful lady in the world.
A brilliant actress that did not get her due
I LOOOOVE MANISHA!
In dil se, it looked like she was gonna take sharukh's breath away.
beauty beauty personality tops
a rare phenomenah.... never in the history of world cinema does anyone come close to her talent & mystique
stranger still is how little acknowledgement she got for it. her PR team was baaaaaaaaaaaaaddddddddddd
It was so radiant you couldn't help but be convinced that whatever was making her smile that way that was true and good.==>
That is an incredible explanation of her smile, and so true!!
Yeah.. her smile was never a camera smile. somehow even in her films, the smile just sparkles with such happiness and such a strong energy..
Case for forigners being welcomed in Bollywood:
Bombay and Khamoshi are some of the biggest classics in the film industry ever;; if she made it at the START of her career.. that's phenonmenal. no one could ever come close to the beauty and talent she has. She is as much India's pride, as she is Nepal's.
she's proof that India should welcome forigeners with open arms. Granted, for every non-talented foreigner whom Salman or some big guy in Bollywood promotes, there are exceptionally talented 'foreigners' like her who think of India as their own, have done tons of charity for India, speak Hindi flawlessly and given India so much!!
Glorious. rare. talented beauty on completely different level than any of the crowd.. .always above the status quo.
Ash's fans are so full of hatered, they are very shrewed like their heroine, they will put few positive comments like " oh I really like mk's movie", and then turn around, log as annoymous, and put 20 negative comments.
MK is an extremely talented actress, who made it big on her own, not with the help of boyfriends, or inlaws name and connection.
Haters infested this site. They can,t stand anyone getting more recognition than their giggly, plastic, fake beauty, who is dumb enough to make poor decision in her personal life too, I feel pity for her, in laws running her life, be it professional or personal. But, what do u expect, when one is shrewed and calculating and her own shrewed came to bite her.
Her beauty is like Venus herself is on screen!!!
India Cinema's rebel and mysterious persona. She's a go-getter!
She's a royalty. More than just Prime Minister background... she has royal ties ... and the Koiralas are considered royalty and #1 in Nepal. She definitely looks very royal and regal.
Yes, there are a lot of jealous people who want to overthrow their power. But if you take a look at 1% of the silent charity that Ms. Koirala does with no publicity, you can see their motivations is very noble.
No, she never ever bragged or used this in her film career to advance.
If Bollywood does not appreciate powerhouse talents&beauty like hers, then Indian cinema does not have crediblity. She worked with all the top producers right at the start--- and with Mani Ratan too twice (Dil Se .. and Bombay).
yeah.. the industry is in camps..
Enchanting beauty+Enchanting talent+Enchanting persona+Enchanting mind+Enchanting emotions.
she is the only one in the world to create such enchantment on screen. only one ever.
Vivek is the poster-boy of how you don't open your mouth without paying a price in bollywood, even if you are telling the real story...but in his case, people blame him because no one stood by him-- and so he was on his own. He was just a starting actor so that's that.
But people forget there was a treasure who also paid the price! MK is one of the most beautiful women and her talent is perhaps one of the finest in Indian cinema. She started at the top with hits like Saudager , and captivating acting like in Bombay.
Yet, she went onto have big tuffs with Salman Khan, Mr. Ghai, and nearly everyone in bollywood (she spoke badly of Madhuri, Sridevi, Aish, Karisma, et all)--- she never liked the way they played fake media games. She was all for the public.
But by opening her mouth, she did pay the price of top stardom. You don't do that in Bollywood and get away with it. Bollywood never cared that she cared for the public and the women of India and Nepal like no other out there..... but she's still caring!
Ek Chotisi Love Story is a bad chapter.... it was done for free, she was tricked in it badly by a double... to the comment below. She was trying to get top films but could not- most actresses do not do 'bad films' unless they are out of choices.
by then, Mr. Bansali had moved onto another muse and actress... and she was barred from the top -producers. Her downfall already started when she no longer was the muse-flavor of the year. These top producers did in fact turn their back on her- and forgot her talent and beauty.
Is the film Heroine really supposed to be based on her? yeah, Madhur has a fascination with her.. a lot of them do...
that's surprising, since a Kapoor is playing it now... and she and Karisma too were arch-rivals back then ...
wouldn't be surprised.... she always that that huge mystery persona. no one understood how such an innocent sweet face could do things on on her terms and be so wild and free! no one understood how someone who could at one moment laugh down at Bollywood's heroines and their fake ways... would feel so deeply for the women of the world.
She's just a huge giant contradiction.... but who would have thought the wildest one could have the most innocent looks and yet, have the biggest talented. She is an artist's artist.
No, deeptijoyti, she did get pushed aside from the big producers and made those films when her main producers turned their back on her.
@Mon, 2011-12-12 08:40 — deepjyoti_dc: must disagree: those films were made after she was suddenly barred from the A-list producers for whom she had made good films and gave solid hits with critical acclaim (Kamoshi, Bombay, Saudager, etc.). These were the only films she was able to get after this barring from the top. She didn't like them.. so she stopped those films also.. and then she had no work here. So that's not the reason for her downfall. The reason is the best producers who worked with her, believed in her, won awards on the films-- forgot about her.

Hi. Sridevi is so cool too - we met her in NYC-she's really very regal and cute.
Well, you can say she made 'bad films', but that was after she was shut out by the A-list producers, all for whom she gave critically acclaimed performances and solid hits with top class films: namely Mr. Bansali (Kamoshsi); Mr. Ghai (Saudgaer); Mr. Mani Ratnam (Bombay). So she had no choice from her prime!
For reasons best known to them (and it's speculated, they moved onto Salman's choices for heroines and closed the door on her), she no longer had the A-list producers with her- despite giving them hits!. She went to B-list and C-list after this. She was very very disappointed .. she even worked for free in many of them (and never got paid). Ek Chotisi story was her biggest disappointment-- worked for free and got tricked into a very bad film with a double doing scenes she did not approve of. she filed a lawsuit, but it was so troubling and long-drawn for her.. she moved on.
She went onto produce a film after this, but that messed up her finances.
So all in all, you can say-- yes, she was shut away from very high places, despite her powerhouse talent and beauty. She started at the top... and ... got pushed out fast. Nevertheless, she managed to turn Bollywood (and its hypocritical ways) upside down--- and left treasures and treasures of films along the way. She did manage to make Bollywood think a bit more... and act deeper. She's still gonna do more!!
Mon, 2011-12-12 09:02 — Anonymous: actually, no one really put totally negative comments on her (except one)--but we have no clue who that was. Most Aish fans seem to be the nice lot (perhaps sometimes defensive because Aish being #1 , gets bashed too much). it's ok.
the pity comments were curious... come on. she works for really big causes now. perhaps a bit star-centric and immature, but Mon, 2011-12-12 08:11 — Anonymous explained her points nicely. She's right... MK did not get her due in Bollywood as much as the others- and MK gave it her all to Indian cinema.. her best. She still is!
Mon, 2011-12-12 08:11 — Anonymous: good thoughts.. you are right... Indians are well over 1 billion (well over)-- and yet we all fight for the one top and only one top spot. It's nice of Aish and other fans to welcome MK!
Bollywood should be the biggest cinema in the world with 50 top spots. It not only represents over 1 billion, it also welcomes foreigners with open arms.
We need a huge huge variety of top stars out there.
It would have been nice to have them all side by side working side, with all their different fan bases. what a dazzling picture that would have been of Indian cinema!
but alas, producers and directors currently do not work this way often. they make camps and work with their selected a-listers, and those a-listers want loyalty and do not want them working with their rivals , etc..... and it's quite hard for people to get entry into these camps. and once you are out (you have offended them, etc.)-- it's quite hard to regain entry. Also, often, a lot of heros (to this day), can veto any heroine they do not like- and the heroines have to be in the good-books of the heros (who then in a way , turn into casting agents). It's a huge bunch of politics in fact and quite some gender barriers.
M.K then tried to produce her own film - but that proved to be a very costly venture.
Well... it would be nice if the industry could turn into pure art rather than politics.. perhaps it will be that way....
All ash fans come and put negative comments
I am a SriDevi Fan,i think Manisha Koirala was a good actress but she ruined her position and career in Bollywood by doing some bad films like Ek Chotisi Love Story,Tum,Market, etc. This is the only reason for Manisha's downfall.Manisha can regain her position in Bollywood because she still has got the star attraction among the public.
@Schmuck and KarismaFan.. why are you feeling bad for a powerful talented artist who works for UNICEF today, and making a powerful difference
I dont know why Schmuck and Kaishma fan are feeling bad, but I (As an Ash fan) is feeling bad for Manisha as well because I certainly feel she deserved more success, credit and popularity in bollywood, which she didn't get. Even if I am an Ash fan, it does not automatically mean I need to detest other actresses. The industry is very big, it does have space for multiple hero/heroines to co-exist and be successful at the same time
diplomacy (lack of it) got the best of her. you don't name top names in Bollywood and get away with it. Did Vivek get away with that? but really, she can never hide what she is thinking.
she's been known to even berate the Koiralas on the gender issues... why would she have spared Bollywood? she'll even berate herself... if she's wrong,. guess Bollywood does not like mirrors on themselves.
