Prakash Jha has not only got the cast he wanted, but has also managed a coup by bringing Amitabh Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor together in his next socio-political drama Satyagraha, which he starts shooting coming January. Here he talks exclusively to TOI.

What is Satyagraha about?
Any social change excites me. The film brings out the angst of the middle class which today exists all over the world as we have seen with movements like Occupy Wall Street or the London Riots or the Anna Hazare agitation.

The film is about making the middle class understand, that while their aspirations, outlook and ambitions need to be fulfilled, they equally need to nurse the democracy with the same strength that they expect the democracy to give them.

They cannot ignore the process of democracy. They choose not to vote, they use their money to break the queue, they think their children are brighter than the lower class so they think they have the right to renegotiate democracy and that is what I want to make them understand.

Who gave the people who participated in Anna's movement against corruption the certificate that they were not corrupt? The middle class, in reality, easily succumbs to corrupt means whether it is educating your child or getting a house or a privilige or pushing others to become successful in the so-called rat race. While there was a boom, you started dreaming, buying cars and went on holidays but with recession you can't do that, so you've started to blame the system. I don't mind 100 families in India surging ahead of others, but a major part of the entire GDP of the country cannot be in their hands as the disparity will lead to violence. I am a believer of growth which is inclusive.

The characters:
Amitabh Bachchan: Plays a man who is a firm believer of truth and an inherant believer of society who wants his son to give back to society and the nation all that they have given him. He is like a new age Gandhi.

Ajay Devgn: He represents shining India and is a brilliant entrepreneur, who uses the ways of the world to get what he wants. He does not see eye to eye with Big B's character.

Arjun Rampal: Plays the role of a strong socially committed activist who has ambitions to become a politician. He studied in the same school of which Bachchan was the principal.

Kareena Kapoor: Is a hard-headed TV reporter out on the field. She digs deep and has an opinion.

Manoj Bajpayee: Plays a wily, young coalition politician who uses every means to break the system. He is the real threat to democracy.

Love: There is very strong traction between Ajay and Kareena, but equally when they clash on ideology they break up and reunite when he comes back to his principles.

All these characters from different backgrounds will come together to bring an andolan — Satyagraha.

For all those who said her career is over after marriage , this is a tight slap !!! Also, I think this role is better than Ram Leela which would be noting but boring SLB melodrama.. looks more strong opposite someone like Ajay and Mr Bachchan himself!

ok kareena, calm down, pahle film release to hone do!!lol

Anonymous's picture

yaar,manoj in the same role:(

No its not a publicity stunt. Prakash Jha and Kareena have both confirmed the casting news of this this film. Kareena said that there are intense scenes between herself and Ajay and intense scenes between herself and Amitabh. I'm surprised that Kareena and Amitabh have agreed to work together. But I guess both families have moved on. I know Raajneeti had the largest budget of any Prakash Jha film. It paid off for that film because of the high powered star cast and the film was entertaining. But Araakshan also a budget that was too large for its subject matter. Satyagraha could work at the box office if it has a small budget that fits its subject matter. The film sounds interesting but Jha needs to budget this film accordingly.

Good to sere kareena choosing strong roles..it was about time, and with Ajay in the lead , also looks like a sure-shot hit..Nice!

I m not a fan of Amitabh but this looks like an out n out AMitabh film like aarakshan n others supporting...He really is a legend and easily one of the greatest actors in the world ever. Can always look forward to his marvelous performances, however good/bad film is.He never fails!

sorry to disappoint you but film revolves around Kareena and Amitabh is playing her menter a supporting role, I know that hurts you but that is the truth.

"This Pra. Jha guy is SO annoying for choosing the same actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devang and Manoj Bajpayee over and over and over and over AGAIN! He recycles the same actors for different roles in all his political drama films!"

Why should he when he did good experiences with this one. I think he knows better what suits the movie than you!

Looks like such a good movie. There seems to be remnants of Rajneeti in Manoj Bajpayee's character or Remnant's of Rann in AB's character but may be that's because same people are playing that role. Infact on a digressing note I will tell all that I liked Rann while it was not liked by so many. Interesting subject always excites me. It's sad for people who didn't like Rann because for them RGV wasted a great subject of "media managament / media scrutiny" and now no other director will make it. RD / Sudeep were awesome. Anyways back to Satyagraha -

Few points - :

1. Is everyone seeing how Big B is completely open these days. As in you can see in his i/w's everything which was out of bounds is back in bound. He will talk about Sonia Gandhi. He will show up with Shobha De. He will work with Kareena Kapoor. All this was out of bound for him. As he is growing older he is ready to mend bridges if people want to do the same which is the quality of a great man.

2. What is great subject chosen by PJ. I mean, you have got to give it to the man. I don't know how he will manage because he has touched 60 but he has a super interesting line of films ready for release. Chakravyuh and Satyagrah (shooting will start immediately after Release of Chakravyuh). Then in 2013 - Shooting of Rajneeti 2 with Katrina with release in 2014 and then shooting of Gangajal 2. That's a very interesting line of films at this age.

3. Arjun Rampal is slowly finding a very firm footing and some very meaty projects. This looks like a character straight out of Kejriwal's life.

Wonder why Ash fans are getting agitated with this news..BTW the film does not revolve around AB (wishful thinking by certain fans)...it is an out and out Ajay-kareena film, others are supporting..i heard kareena being the only female lead has a meaty role.

Well, not fond of Prakash Jha.Haven't seen any 'complete' film of his. :P But why is he signing the same actors like Manoj,Arjun(wood)?Boring! And he uses his women(in the film) only for being romanced rather than actually giving them substantial roles, atleast in his recent films.Hope its not a case but it seems so.

it sounds like aarakshan which was so bad.

i loved raajneeti, but Jha took the time to make that movie. since its success he's been on a rampage making one movie after another basically saying the same thing through the SAME characters.

When has Amitabh not played a neo-Gandhi??

the one coming up with Arjun and Abhay hasn't even released yet , and he's already released character sketches for another movie!!

Anonymous's picture

No kareena confirmed that she signed this movie..:)

Didn't Jha deny this? Just another publicity stunt I guess, even Prakash Jha isn't above such tricks, hmmm!

He recycles the same actors for different roles in all his political drama films!!!!!!!! BORING!!!!! Do something different and work with other actors besides your usual picks in every film!

Mystic Rose's picture

Well I'm glad shes trying different stuff, lets hope Jha executes it better this time around. Didn't some people turned blue crying that Kareena in the next Jha film was PR created bullshit? Well now you know its not.

I have a bad feeling about this film. Contrived political films like Arakshan just don't work. When will Jha learn that and make films with more depth and an intelligent script. He seems big on concept and poor on delivery.
.........................................
I totally agree. Prakash Jha is a fine filmmaker & has some brilliant ideas and concepts but he can't execute them with finesses. Rajneeti & Aarakshan ended up being such cliched & pretentious films,& they did not have any depth.

lol

this sounds too much like arakshan which was such a lackluster hence the flop.

Kareena role is supposed to be very performance orentied after Mrityudand! There were reports that after Madhuri the female lead is supposed to be very strong looking forward to it..=)

Ahahaha poor PC's failing lobbying tactics go down the drain.

Gohar's picture

I'm still waiting when Prakash Jha will make one more great women centric movie like Mrityudand!

Anonymous's picture

looks like aarakshan on a different set up...its sad that even after so many years in the industry-kareena is going to do a deepika here.

Anonymous's picture

kareena in a small side role..lol...nothing new for her.

Anonymous's picture

I really like Aarakshan, so looking forward to watching Satyagrah too

Anonymous's picture

Good for her for landing the role. I read that PC was begging the director for this role

Anonymous's picture
