Bollywood Legend-Meena Kumari
Mahjabeen was born on August 1, 1932 in Dr. Gadre's Clinic in Bombay, India to a Muslim father, Ali Bux, and a Hindu mother, Iqbal Begum (Nee Prabhavati Tagore). She has two sisters Khurshid and Madhu. Mahjabeen wanted to study in school but was compelled to act in Hindi movies as a child artiste, and ended up becoming the sole bread earner of the family. She first appeared in a 1939 movie 'Leatherface' and was cast as Baby Meena in the predominantly Hindu movie industry in British India that was yet to see the day as Bollywood. Meena Kumari went on to act in a total of 94 movies, in a career that spanned from 1939 through to 1972. She become a household name after her performances in 'Baiju Bawra', 'Parineeta', 'Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam', 'Kaajal' as well as received 'Best Actress' awards for these titles. She became personified as the archetypal good Hindu wife through many roles, long suffering and always true to the man. She excelled at tragedy and was often shown in a white sari carrying the film with her emotive acting. She was also thought to be the only actress who could sell a film on the strength of her name alone. In 1952 she got married to Kamal Amrohi, and had a son named Taajdaar. The marriage was harmonious and resulted in joint movie ventures, namely 'Daera' and 'Pakeezah'. Neither knew that the latter would take over 14 years to complete. A few years after the marriage, Kamal and Meena started having differences, and started to drift apart, and finally divorced during 1964, leaving 'Pakeezah' incomplete. 'Pakeezah' was finally completed and released on 4 February 1972, but flopped at the box office. A few weeks later Meena was hospitalized in St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home, but passed away on March 31, 1972 due to liver problems. Shortly after her passing, the public took a renewed interest in 'Pakeezah' and the film subsequently went on to become a hit. TRIVIA: Wrote poetry in Urdu, some of which has been published. Mehmood Married Meena Kumari's sister. Mehmood Taught table tennis to Meena Kumari. At the Filmfare Awards 1963, she was the only one nominated in the category Best Actress in a Leading Role. She was nominated for three of her performances in three different films - an achievement still not accomplished by any other actress at the Filmfare Awards.

she was the true legend, no one is near to her in acting today, todays heroine expose more and act little. Because, exposing is the survival instinct to them in present movies, because as camera comes near to them they do not know which expression to give...........so as near the camera comes exposing starts.....................
I always feel that meenakumari is a legend and present bollywood heroins should learn acting form her movies
She and Madhubala had tragic deaths. yet both were beautiful and acted so well.

nice post Kumar
Taajdar was not her son, it was Amrohi's from his frist wife. Also, her movies made so much money but she was back to the position when she was born, there wasn't anyone to pay her bills in the hospital. when she was born her dad had left her in the orphanage for 1 hour then went back and picked her up. She also had a close relationship with Dharmendra.
Very true Latika_rocks ! a mind of one's own is part of Indian tradition and Bollywood should respect that. Meena was a very very senstive artist- and in fact, Manisha was inspired by her.
But only cosmetic glories are glorified in Bollywood today.
she was truly a gem. today's so-called actresses are only in the movie to look pretty and are like a n ornament in the movies to make the heroes look good. rarely do we see a woman oriented film
