"Do you think she will continue acting?" or "Do you think the role will suit her"? are questions you often hear when a female actor ties the knot. It has been a topic of debate everytime a female actor gets married because like it or not it is most often followed by her gradual disappearance from celluloid due to various reasons. Marriage being the prime and then motherhood. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan might be the only mainstream actress of recent time whose sex appeal and glamour has remained in tact, if not increased, after her marriage. But a question that then comes to the mind is if her role in "Dhoom 2" would have been accepted if she had done it after she became the Mrs. Another female star who hasn't had a downfall would be Malaika Arora Khan. She has always maintained that she would like to remain the "item" girl and audiences have always accepted her. But there are numerous others who haven't been so lucky.
Sridevi, Juhi Chawla, Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon are versatile actors who have done some great work during their prime time. But today, a Sridevi or Juhi Chawla running around trees or dancing in the snow in chiffon sari would be far from accepted. The comment that would usually come up that time will be, "Can't she act her age"? Very interestingly, the same has NEVER been said to a married male actor. In fact the "family man" image just ups their glamour quotient. Most leading actors have found stardom after marriage and fatherhood. Shah rukh khan, Aamir Khan, Shiney Ahuja to name a few. Being married did not stop the audience from accepting Hrithik Roshan as a super hero in "Krrish" neither did it stop them from accepting Farhan Akhtar and Arjun Rampal as rock stars in "Rock on".
There was an era in films when there were female actors in the industry solely because of their acting calibre, irrespective of their marital status. Yesteryear female actor Devika Rani entered the industry after she married producer - actor, Himanshu Rai. Later, Shobana Samarth, Meena Kumari and Nutan followed suit. This trend
somehow lost the battle in the long rum to the superficial pursuit of glamour and sex appeal. Like the time when Rakhee, who had earlier played Amitabh Bachchan's love interest, after marriage played the
role of his mother! Some may argue that this is no more the case and married female actors are making a comeback and are being hugely accepted. True, they are, but only in offbeat, women centric movies. When was the last time you saw any of them in a role like the one Kareena played in "Kambhakt Ishq" or Anushka Sharma in "Band Baaja Baraat"? Much as we hate to admit, marriage still is the main criteria that decides the star value of film stars. A lot positive for the male actors but the other way round for their female counterparts.

I think actresses who are married to BW actors/producers will always have an advantage of working with their hubby darlings anytime they want like Kajol, Aish, Kareena and Sri.
Also more than the marital status AGE factor affects an actress' star appeal. Where is Urmila, Priety, Rani etc today ?
Aishwarya is great icon..she is much more higher than these average stars maduri sridevi and other wanabe stars aka bebo/beba
AISHWARYA RAI is trend setter..in every field she leads as leader..
sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Depending on the actor/star. How they handle their professional life. If they are good at what they do, i dont think their personal life should matter
Madhuri should never have left if she wanted to continue working. She thought she could just pick up from where she left. Guess she miscalculated.
Don't understand these actors....they go on long hiatus and expect everyone to give them a grand welcome when they decide to return.
Aishwarya is an exception. Otherwise it affects everyone else.
in this century i thik no.
No it doesn't really affect if we try to forget about it :-) and if the acting is convincing where we get lost in the story and chemistry between the two stars. As far as off-screen fandom goes, i think marital status can affect the popularity of a star.
so ttrue marroed women really do not get the same appeal as they do when they are single
dont think its marital status but how young the actresses look - asian ppl hv this thing that the guy has to look older thn the girl no matter what - n the khans et al look good for their age, albeit aamir n salman look gud in real life too which cnt b said bout srk nemore..akki too looks fab for his age, these guys except srk look younger thn wat they r whereas the wmen look good for their age n look their age.......somene like lolo will get away with being cast with younger actors cos she still looks n is young
This is such a relevant and timely piece; I really think both audiences and filmmakers need to be called out more often on their sexism and double standards.
another ash rai post..pfff!
another ash rai post..pfff!
ok her we go again with people bringing Bachchan bahu name into things.
FYI Mani Ratnam and Shankar and Bhansali didn't give her recent great roles because she married a Bachchan
Aishwarya did Robot after marriage so yes to your question over whether she could have done Dhoom 2 after marriage.
I think, once your married it just happens.. And by "it" I mean, your priorities automatically come in view. As a married woman myself, I know that it's hard juggling a career AND a home and husband. Although I don't work anymore, I have worked in the past whilst being married, and it just wasnt easy. I would feel bad about how I should be at home etc. I guess it's just the South Asian mentality.. Women have it in their nature to be motherly, and to care for their home etc.
P.S I don't think Aish's sex appeal has stayed with her at all. I think she's viewed as the Bachchan bahu now, all beautiful and graceful etc. I certainly wouldn't call her sexy, but would deffo call her beautiful. Sexy is overrated anyway!
