Traditional Tales

While Bollywood ladies are great patrons of international styles and trends, they haven’t looked past and forgotten our Indian looms. Of all the desi weaves, Kanjivaram, a traditional style of South India, has always been a rage.

A patent look of yesteryear’s star Rekha, this style is being adopted by even the young brigade of the industry today. The number of stars sporting kanjivaram at Esha Doel’s recently concluded wedding is a clear testimony of the fact. So much so, that when international TV hostess Oprah Winfrey visited india, she took picked a kanjivaram drape by Tarun Tahiliani.

Vidya Balan has joined the league of actresses who are partial to this style. A self-confessed Rekha fan, she too has made this her signature look. Most times Balan pairs them with jhumkas topping it off with either a bun or hair let loose.

A tricky trend to master, one which might make you look older beyond your years, does the kanjivaram win over you too?

You guys need to stop raving about Rekha - behind all this show of coyness, romance is a cold calculated hard hearted woman who deliberately wants people to keep linking her to AB. Why else wud she keep on referring to his name, keep on wearing sindoor? She is Btown's resident hore who needs to be flogged for her pathetic behavior

Sri Devi & Rekha

South or North, which ever part of India, Sindhoor (the red powder put in the partition of the hair or at the place where the forehead meets the hair) is to signify your marital status.
The bindi (tilak, tikli, kumkum, pottu) which is put in between the eyebrows or close to it in the forehead is something anyone can wear. Male, female, old, young, married, divorced, widowed etc. As that has a different significance and if not relegious even for decoration with stickers and paints and any color.

So, if you notice : In the pictures above, you see Rekha wearing both Sindhoor and bindi. And she wasn't enacting in a film for a particular character.... it was some function she was attending. Anyway, what can we expect from a lady who imagines herself to be a newly wedded bride all through her life and dresses similarly all the time. Insane.

It is wrong to say that Kanjeevaram saris, jhumkas and flowers in hair will make a woman look older. I think it is a pre-concieved notion. Just take a look at Aishwarya Rai, Shilpa Shetty or Vidya Balan...they look so charming, regal and lovely in their Kanjeevarams. Though I don't like the Christmas tree look of Rekha, her sari attire never makes her look older and Sridevi looks gorgeous in it. Of course, one should know how to carry a Kanjeevaram. Kanjeevaram saris are peices of art and every Indian should be proud of this unique art produced Only in India.

well the 'sindhoor' or 'kum kum' has a different significance in South India to that of North India.

Aishwarya, Sridevi and Shilpa look good.

Although Rekha's sarees are nice, there is not much difference in them. They are all solid gold and glitter. And sad part is that she dresses the same for all occasions. Heavy jewelry, caked makeup, dark lipstick, glittering potli, and sindhoor.
I wonder if she knows the significance of sindhoor. It is strange she uses it as a fashion statement or just like that.
Rekha needs to dress according to the occasion and not wear the same heavy stuff for regular and special events.
What is the point in dressing similarly for a wedding, award ceremony, book launch, etc etc. She should learn from Kirron Kher, who dresses very well in a saree and wears clothes and makeup apt for the situation.
