Onam is a festival which is celebrated in full swing by Malayalis in the city of Kerala and outside it. According to legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate the king Mahabali whose spirit is said to come every year to Kerala during the time of Onam and celebrate the festival. This includes the Boat race, tiger dances mask dance, martial arts, etc. The festivities are celebrated by eating meals together and participating in these traditional events. Some of the most epic recipes that you can whip up at home easily, include:


1 cup pumpkin slices
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/2 spoon turmeric powder
2 garlic cloves
1/2 spoon turmeric
1/2 spoon cumin seeds
4 green chillis 
1/4 spoon pepper powder

Blend the grated coconut along with cut up green chillis, cumin seeds, turmeric powder and pepper and mix it to form a fine paste. 
Cut up the pumpkin into small pieces and boil it. Add a pinch of salt and turneric powder and mash it together with the pumpkin.
Put this in a pan and add the blended coconut paste and let it simmer. 
Take another pan and heat up two spoons of oil. Add mustard seeds to this along with curry leaves and chillies and then add some grated coconut. Fry this until it turns brown and mix it with the ingredients of the other pan. 
Serve once cool. 


1 cup curd 
2 garlic pods
1/2 spoon turmeric 
1 cup sliced cucumber
1/2 spoon turmeric 
1/2 cup grated coconut 
2 green chillis 
2 red chillis 
1/4 tbsp chili powder
1/4 spoon fenugreek 
1/2 cup mustard 
Curry leaves
2 spoon coconut oil

Mix the grated coconut, garlic and 2 small onions along with the cumin seeds and green chilis. Let this form a fine paste. 
In a pan, add the cucumber in 3/4 cup water and cook it on a low flame. But make sure not to overcook this. 
Add the grated coconut paste and curd to this mixture and let it simmer on a low flame until it boils. 
Add coconut oil to a pan and with it add mustard and fenugreek seeds. Wait till they start spluttering and then add the red chillis and curry leaves to it. Add a dash of turmeric powder and salt to taste. 
Mix this with the previously prepared items and serve with hot rice. 

Avial Curry

1 cup yam
1 cup drumstricks
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped melon
1 cup chopped green beans
1 cup chopped yellow pumpkin
1 banana chopped
1/2 cup curd
1/4 spoon turmeric
2 tsp coconut oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
Curry leaves

Prepare a paste by coarsely grinding the grated coconut into a paste by adding cumin seeds, curry leaves and chillis. 
Chop the vegetables and ensure they are of the same size. 
Chop the peel of the banana as well into rectangular pieces. 
Cook the vegetables in a pan with hot water. 
To this, add a dash of turmeric, salt to taste, curry leaves and chopped chillis. 
In another pan, add the coconut paste and let it summer for 10-15 mins. 
To this mix, add curd, oil, cumin seeds and simmer. Wait till this is almost dry and then serve hot.
