Are you trying to adopt a healthy lifestyle? With all the debate about the right food to eat and fitness regimes to follow, it can be quite confusing to stick to one belief. With so much information floating on the Internet, it can be difficult to separate the real facts from the fictitious ones. Wondering how to differentiate between the gospel truth and the tell tales?

Sheryl Salis, Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator, helps bust the biggest myths around food and nutrition.

Myth 1: Olive oil has lesser calories than regular oil

Fact: All oils provide the same calories per gram. It is advisable to use a blend of different oils as it gives us better health benefits.

For example, you can opt for a teaspoon full of virgin coconut oil, which helps in weight management and aids digestion. It is important to remember that moderation is key.

Myth 2: Brown sugar is better than white sugar

Fact: Brown sugar and white sugar are the same in terms of calorie content. Brown sugar has some content of trace minerals which can be found in fruits and vegetables. Nowadays, there are different kinds of low glycemic index sugar in the market, such as coconut sugar, which can be consumed in moderation even if you have diabetes.

Myth 3: Superfoods are expensive

Facts: You do not need to buy expensive and exotic superfoods. You can use foods which are easily available locally and have been used since ancient times such as moringa (drumsticks), millets and coconut oil. Use your kitchen as your pharmacy.

It is essential to take a nutritionist or dietician’s opinion if you’re trying to change your diet chart or switching to new food habits. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “The first wealth is health.”
