High blood pressure aka hypertension which is a common health issue is also known as the silent killer as the same is an insidious condition. Many people easily miss the symptoms of it. If left unnoticed and untreated, the high force of blood against the artery walls can damage many important blood vessels and can also cause cardiovascular ailments.

Aside from the heart, the disorder can also lead to eye, brain and kidney issues as well. Being obese, lack of physical activity, too much salt and alcohol consumption, stress, old age, sleep apnea and genetics are some of the causes of high BP.

To keep such situations at bay, one should regularly keep checking their BP and also make a few lifestyle changes if you are pre-hypertension or have hypertension. And now, we have learned that energy drinks can also lead to elevated levels of high BP.

Study on the same

As per Henry Ford Hospital study, researchers found that healthy adults who drank two cans of energy drinks per day showed an increase in their blood pressure and heart rate. No major changes in EKG measurements were seen.

The spike in blood pressure and heart rate were insignificant for healthy adults, but can be harmful to high BP and heart-ailment patients. James Kalus, senior manager of Patient Care Services at Henry Ford Hospital and lead author of the study said, "Based on our findings, we recommend that people who have hypertension or heart disease and are taking medication for them to avoid consuming energy drinks because of the potential risk to their health."

Researchers think that the caffeine and taurine content in energy drinks is the reason which increases in blood pressure and heart rate. For the unversed, the caffeine levels in energy drinks are quite the same to at least one to two cups of coffee. And as high BP patients must be aware, caffeinated drinks are a big no-no for them.

Also, please do not get confused between an energy drink and sports drinks. The latter is good and helps to replenish the carbohydrates and electrolytes.

Other ways to keep high BP at bay

One should cut down on salt intake as the same is the main culprit in spiking BP levels. Increase the intake of potassium-rich foods such as bananas, oranges, prunes, raisins, dates, peas, pumpkins, beans, lentils and nuts as they negate the effects of salt.

Avoid drinking coffee, tea, and alcohol as well. One should also be extra vigilant when it comes to smoking and daily consumption of packaged, processed and junk food items as they also negatively impact high blood pressure.

Aside from a healthy diet, one should also indulge in any form of physical activity as being fit and management of weight can also lead to a reduction of BP. Also, inclusion of stress management techniques to lower stress is vital as stress also spikes BP.
