If you’ve decided to embark on a weight loss journey, it is a long road ahead. Instead of looking for short cuts, it is important to shed the extra pounds from your body safely and smartly. Before you start doing all the things right, here are two things you should steer clear of.

Sheryl Salis, Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator, busts some myths circling around weight loss and belly fat reduction.

Myth 1: Carbs make you fat

Facts: Carbs are not a villain and are essential nutrients for a healthy body. Going off carbs causes many nutritional deficiencies as carbohydrates have essential vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, and photochemical with antioxidant properties.

Instead of shunning carbs, it is important to include carbs in moderation. Quality and quantity of carbs are equally important. There is now accumulating evidence that unprocessed carbohydrates, including whole grains, fruit, vegetables, and legumes, have health benefits and those from refined sources, including white bread and white rice and particularly sugar and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), are associated with increased risk of obesity, CVD, and type 2 diabetes.

Myth 2: Skipping meals will help you cut calories especially breakfast

Facts: Skipping a meal is not a good idea as it is likely to cause mood swings and lowers your concentration. There are also higher chances of eating more of those “saved” calories” later causing you to gain more fat and weight. Research has shown that those who skip breakfast have a higher chance of being overweight and developing Type 2 Diabetes. Thus, instead of skipping breakfast, it is advisable to have a wholesome power breakfast of poha, upma, porridge, etc. You now get these made from millets and quinoa which are more nutritious and healthy keeping your weight and waist in check.

So, what are you waiting for? Get set to adopt a healthier way of life to cut off the flab.
