High Blood Pressure in children is a growing disorder and you must be careful about it. How do you know your child is suffering from high blood pressure? Is it dangerous?

WHAT IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN CHILDREN?

Blood pressure is the force of blood as it flows through the body’s vessels. When this pressure increases, it causes high blood pressure also known as hypertension. This can damage the vessels and other organs. For adults, it is easier to detect high blood pressure by doing a blood pressure checks and comparing numbers to a simple chart. In case of children, the same method is used but it is hard to interpret the numbers. A lot of times, the doctor may use the child’s height, sex and blood pressure numbers to detect hypertension.

  • Fast or pounding heart beat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Nosebleeds
  • Nausea

WHAT CAUSES HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN CHILDREN?

Hypertension in children is often due to health conditions such as heart defects, kidney diseases, hormonal disorders or genetic conditions. Older children deal with high blood pressure due to reasons like overweight, poor immunity etc.

HOW TO TREAT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN CHILDREN?

 - Make sure your child is eating healthy. Give them more fruits and vegetables. Keep a close check on their diet.

 - Limit the amount of time your child spends on television and video games.

 - Get your child’s blood pressure checked regularly.

 - If your child’s blood pressure is severe, make sure he/she is taking medications on time.

 - Avoid tobacco/smoking around your child. Even secondhand smoking is bad for your child. It increases blood pressure.
