A member of the palm tree family, the coconut is a tropical fruit full of nutrients. Known as a superfood, coconuts are known for their versatile uses, from food to cosmetics. The unique combination of fatty acids in coconut can have positive effects on health. Perhaps, that’s why coconut water, coconut milk and coconut oil is extracted for common use.

Sheryl Salis, Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator, says, “Coconut oil is one of the richest sources of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are known for immense health benefits such as aiding digestion and helping support cognitive functions.” The MCT present in coconut oil is similar to the nutrients in breast milk. Hence, they are known for their immune system functioning to combat bacteria, parasitic and fungal infections.

When you consume coconut oil, its anti-microbial properties are activated, which then converts triglycerides (fats) into monoglycerides and free fatty acids in the digestive tract. The process ultimately improves digestion and nutrient absorption. Moreover, coconut oil is also known for its ability to weaken harmful bacteria so that it disintegrates and dies. The process is so powerful that it even helps kill the super germs that are resistant to antibiotics.

“A spoonful of cold pressed virgin coconut oil can be used as a salad dressing or for stir-frying. It is beneficial in reducing visceral fat (waist circumference),” Salis adds. Coconut oil also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Not only does it prevent heart diseases and lowers blood pressure but also protects the liver, boosts the immune system and improves memory.

So, if your stomach is acting up, why not try to heal yourself with a tablespoon of coconut oil? However, Salis warns, “It is important to remember that moderation is key.”
